Need help identifying gun I saw at the range. He said what it was, but I forgot.
>rolling block? Falling block?
>two triggers

>had a barrel sleeve installed for it to be .22lr
It was a two part name. German? Swiss?

God, THIS.
Fucking baby boomer spergs at the gun range are the WORST. I can just see that fucker, boreswab in hand, cleaning the bore on his ancient shitgun after every 5 shots, taking 2 million years to rehang a new target at every cold range, and then GOD FUCKING FORBID if you make eyecontact with him, because HERE HE COMES all asking about your shit, getting in your lane, fucking sperging out about his cats and his crappy guns and 8 bazillion boring bullshit stories about his mundane existence and absolutley NO SOCIAL AWARENESS to see that you are literally about to die of boredom and frustration.

You can't even be nice to rage fudds. You have to tell them to fuck off in no uncertain terms or they will DESTROY your range experience.

Worse than fucking mosquitoes.

It's an 1885-pattern low wall falling-block rifle. Whether it's an actual Winchester or one of the MANY repros/clones I couldn't tell you, there's currently 7 companies that make them.
>falling block
>double set trigger
>hammer is exposed, so it's a low-wall (high wall shrouded the hammer and strengthened it)
>Swiss butt (despite the name, the US made more rifles with Swiss butts than the Swiss did)
Since it's a low-wall it's either an older repro with a sleeve or a dedicated .22lr gun. Low walls were only ever produced in .22lr or .22 short originally with the high-walls being used for all the centerfire rounds, although some of the 1980's-era repros had low pressure pistol calibers like .44-40 and .357mag done with the low-wall receiver.

They're neat guns, though the Swiss butt is uncomfortable as shit for anything but Schutzen/supine-prone shooting.

I agree save for the stories and details. The ones around me tend to have genuinely useful tidbits tucked between the layers of shit. Usually makes it worth the wait, and I have to let my barrel cool anyway.

I hate the "old guy obviously breaking in the barrel for the nth time" shit though. Fudds cling to misinformation and unfounded theories vehemently, and I've noticed it's mostly a trait of baby boomers at large and not just the fudds. I'm really fucking tired of hearing about how revolvers are intrinsically more accurate than autos
>>
>>33930640
>The ones around me tend to have genuinely useful tidbits tucked between the layers of shit
This. There's always something new to learn and someone who's been shooting for 40 years probably has a lot to teach.
>>
>>33930311
Its a famas
>>
>>33930640
Sounds like you're the one who's believing shit on the internet with zero proof or feasibility.
>breaking in the barrel
This has actual, demonstrable and scientifically provable benefits as well as something that all the big-name accuracy companies not only recommend but give step by step instructions on how to do.
>inb4 "but it doesn't make the gun any more accurate"
No shit, it's not supposed to and nobody except stupid people on 4chan have ever claimed that it does. It decreases the rate a barrel fouls up and makes the fouling easier to get out. it's basically fire lapping lite.

>revolvers are intrinsically more accurate than semi's
While this is an overly broad generalization there IS truth to the matter. For any given barrel length the revolver will have a longer sight radius and a more solid optics mounting platform, and facilitates the use of the inherently accurate SWC or full wadcutter bullets that simply don't feed properly in most semi's. However, just like literally anything else with moving parts, there are variances and it's not a fucking guarantee. Also, the differences are minor enough that it's only noticeable when shooting with the aid of a machine rest and a remote trigger actuator.
>>
>>33930605
It was definitely a sleeved barrel
>>
>>33930719
Please source said companies recommending breaking in barrels, this scientific evidence proving it does fuck all, etc. I searched high and low long ago for anything resembling objective evidence and found naught in the affirmative but subjective tests with no genuine credibility. Quite the contrary in fact, I found tests with published methods demonstrating how it does nothing at all and can at the very most harm accuracy slightly depending on which "method" of breaking in is employed. Companies like bergara and AI say it does nothing.

To be fair, Hart does not recommend a break-in procedure, they feel they do a good enough job with their lead lapping.

Including Hart, that's 4 of the 5 biggest names in accuracy barrels. Just missing Brux, which has no official statement one way or the other on their website.

Here's a more detailed read on barrel break-in.

Eh, not really. This isn't what I was referring to when I said breaking in. Both of these are guys that have been shooting a long time and recommend you pay attention to groups and the barrel and clean accordingly. I mean, no shit.

It's not the same as the guys with a meticulous 100-200 round process with exhaustive cleanings in between 5 round groups that believe what they are doing helps the barrel maintain accuracy through the rest of it's life and even extends it's life, which is simply not true.
>>
>>33931346
>"please source companies recommending breaking in barrels"
>okay, here's 3 from 3 of the top 5 accuracy barrel companies, including what's universally regarded as the best (Krieger), plus an in-depth discussion from a community whose sole focus is long range precision
>T-THAT DOESN'T COUNT!
Face it, you're BTFO and you're trying to move goalposts now.
>>
>>33930719
>there is truth to the matter

There really isn't. The answer to "are revolvers intrinsically more accurate than autos?" is objectively "no". Entertaining the idea otherwise is just being pedantic. It's a rash, wildly inaccurate generalization.
>>
>>33930341
this, Zed's been on point lately
>>
>>33931411
Not really. The goal posts are where they've always been. "Is there a break in procedure that improves barrel life and accuracy for the course of it's life". It wasn't explicitly stated, but it wouldn't matter if it was. I mean, did you even read the articles? They say themselves it's a highly subjective process. Rifles shoot better after they've seen some use. This is not a matter of debate. The question is does it make a difference how that period of some use occurs, and the answer is still no
>>
>>33930455
gee anon keep your fucking crippling social autism to yourself
>>
>>33931531
I agree it's a generalization, but I still say there is some truth to it. And those reasons can be spelled out:

Most revolvers have the sights rigidly mounted to the gun. This removes the slop found in most Autos where the barrel and at least one of the sights can move relative to each other. (take a 1911 for example; the sights are on the slide, and the barrel can move relative to the slide)

Of course there are exceptions to that.

Yeah man same, god forbid I have to talk to someone in real life about guns instead of on a ex-soviet cabbage trading board.

Pic related, its you.
>>
>>33931838
It's still wrong though. For the statement to be anything other than wrong, every revolver would necessarily be more accurate than any given auto, which is obviously not the case. It's the same as making the argument that a turn bolt rifle is always more accurate than a semi automatic rifle. One could make the argument that it's easier to make an accurate revolver because certain design aspects lend themselves to shooting more accurately, but they aren't intrinsically more accurate. It's really arguing semantics at this point, but it's nonetheless false.

To be clear, the only reason I'm making this argument is because of old fudds that refuse to buy/shoot autos for reasons they clearly don't understand. I don't have anything against revolvers themselves
>>
Whatever, but that old FUDD will out shoot any of you fucking AR twinks.

These bench rest shooting tards are religious with their accuracy. Their rifles hare highly customized, in some cases completely fabricated (that is EVERY part custom built) and with THICC heavy barrels.

Some of their competitions are ridiculous:
A. 2 shots on blank white paper.
1. First shot creates your "target"
2. Second shot must be INSIDE your target(first shot)
Big money.

Have seen variations, on bench or prone.

>Listen to the barrel makers guys! Dey no bes, rite?

Barrel makers want to sell more barrels. If people wear out their barrels faster, they'll buy new ones sooner. Hooray! More Profit!

The only thing "bore break in" does is wear your bore out faster. That's all. You will note that EVERY. SINGLE. BARREL MANUFACTURERS. TECHNIQUE for this fudd-level mythological break in bullshit has one commonality: Scrubbing your bore with abrasives.

Abrasives to accelerate wear, causing you to need a new barrel sooner. And they have you convinced "It's the only way for PEAK ACCURACY! lol"

If you believe in "bore break in", you're just a fool waiting to have his money parted from him.

kek

i go to the range to shoot, not talk

maybe because i'm in a bigger city, i absolutely do not want to talk to people at the range

yikes...

1 pop brought his 3 kids and their 4 friends, shooting out of 1 booth

5 20 somethings shooting on 1 booth acting cool

2 females trying out their new 25 auto i watched a bit because i was next booth over & then switched because they kept pointing the muzzle everywhere

some intense weird looking person shooting quickly but not hitting the target very well

every now & then i see somebody that can shoot better than me, which is not saying much because i can barely get 5" groups at 7 yards

but still that range is better than the "membership" range, every booth is always full, they put rifle shooters in with the handguns because they're too cheap to open / pay electricity for the other bay, and always some clowns with 45's & timers practicing their quick draw double taps

ugh but still it beats driving 2-3 hours for some deserted woods thing

>>
>>33930640
It's not a trait specific to revolvers.
It's a matter of making the barrel it's own movingly part.
Things like Makarovs and to some extent Lugers are quite accurate without having to have obscene tolerances (well, the Makarov is anyways) because of a fixed barrel.

Because revolvers by nature of not needing a moving barrel don't have one, they're far easier to accurise and are usually a bit more accurate.

I work weekdays (but could call out sick - mental health day) non-rapid-fire weekends aren't too bad if you get there early enough, like 9-10. I usually do either rifle+skeet or pistol+skeet per trip, cause the skeet stations are opening up as we're coming out of snowbird season.
