Also,

Good luck. You're confined to Gen 1 to Gen 1+ with that price range which are all shitty.

Gen 2 and up is the only way to go.
>>
>>33926547
That's fine, any links?

>>33926402

These but you'll have to do a little nigger rigging to a battery or something to get it working since they were designed to hook up to a tank. Also, you'll have to find something to shoot out infrared since these pre-date built in IR unless there's a full moon out or decent amount of low lighting around.
Can't go wrong for $120 though.
>>
>>33926780
EXACTLY. Look up what Gen I is if you don't believe: it's passive, so you need your own IR illumination or it's going to be so dim it's useless 9 times out of 10. Gen II or III is really the only way to go IMO, lot more expensive but the step up in picture quality, illumination, electronics quality - it all adds up. Like with IR shit, if you can't buy good stuff, either don't get it or just wait and save. Patience is rewarded.

If for some reason you really need something in the next week, two weeks, month whatever and your income is such that you can't set shit aside in short time to save up, then you really just have to stick with visible light bud. IR and NVGs are a gearqueer's game, and honestly they're luxuries for the most part. A good set of flashlights are far more versatile and you'll use them for all sorts of shit beside just tacticool LARPing or the occasional hiking, fishing, and hunting expedition.

Just found these, think I'll order a pair this weekend.

PNV-57A and its variants, PN-1/PN-3, Cyclop and PNV-57E. The PNV-57A is Gen.0 active IR so you won't be able to see anything without an IR illuminator. As >>33926813 pointed out, you'll need to rig a 12V battery source to make them work. The PN-1, PN-3 and Cyclop are early Gen.1 passive optics (no IR required, they're still pretty anemic though) and the PN-3 has a built-in illuminator in case it's cloudy or some shit.

the PNV-57E is the king of poorfag night vision since it's an early passive Gen. 2 that you can sometimes find for 350 burger vouchers. Like the PNV-57A you'll need to find a power source since they were originally tanker goggles.

>>33926813
>Also, you'll have to find something to shoot out infrared since these pre-date built in IR
the variants of the PNV-57A intended for infantry use (PNV-57H, NS-71) actually have IR lamps bolted to them.

>>33926831
>passive
I don't think you know what that word means.

>then you really just have to stick with visible light bud
lolwat

Gen.0/1 isn't ideal but it's generally not as shitty as everyone makes it out to be. A lot of them are absolute turds but many others are more than adequate for blasting shit in the dark and navigation. Obviously if you have the money and aren't interested in collecting ancient optics you should save up for something nicer, but my point stands.

here's the night vision price scale
<$1,000 Gen 1
$1,200-2,400 Gen 2
$3,000 + Gen 3.
Generation one tubes have no microchannel plate, low resolutions of around 35 lines per millimeter, and an extremely short tube life.
Generation Two has a microchannel plate, but like generation one has a multi alkali photocathode, they can have up to a ~50 lines per millimeter resolution, however, are not much more light sensitive than Generation one, meaning it will still be like looking through a beer bottle to some extent, however, geometric distortion at the side of the fields of view will not be as prominent. Tube life is 5,000 hours for the 40-45 line per millimeter tubes and more advanced tubes will have a full 10,000 hour tube life.
Generation three has a microchannel plate like generation two, however, uses a Gallium Arsenide photocathode, which greatly increases light sensitivity, often protected by an ION barrier film to extend tube life. These tubes have been in production since the early nineties or so, however, most current tubes of today are autogated, and may lack the film, increasing resolution, and preventing things like bright light sources from negatively impacting tube life.
>>
has NVG prices gone down steadily? Or pretty much stayed same throughout all the generations?

Roughly the same. The light tubes are very delecate and very pricy to produce. Add the low quantity that is produced by only a hand few of firms that all have to deal with itar and shit, and u come to 2k average. Been like this for ever. But maybe thermal will get cheaper soon. FlirIR is wörking on it
>>
>>33927478
that sucks.
So thermal is the more likely cheaper alternative going forward?
What's the deal about the hybrid ones with thermal and colorful outlines?

How is the PNV-57? I would like to get the PNV-57E but I can get the PNV-57 for close to half the price.
>>
In aus we are only allowed to have up to GEN 2+, in saying so whats a good NVG or NV scope that GEN 2+ I also wouldnt mind thermal but a good thermal scope in Aus is like 8k..
