Some good ones are when Caligula lined his army up to the Ocean and declared war on Neptune, ordering his men to stab the water. Since Neptune didn't fight back he declared victory and took sea shells as war trophies.

There are also plenty of counts of Soviets encountering Yetis.

The Soviet one sounds like the "ape people" were just some hairy ass fuckers living feral.

>Another case is said to date from around 1941, shortly after the German invasion of the USSR. A "wild man" was captured somewhere in the Caucasus by a detachment of the Red Army. He appeared human, but was covered in fine, dark hair. Interrogation revealed his apparent inability (or unwillingness) to speak, and the unfortunate creature is said to have been shot as a German spy.
>>
>>33924109
Assuming that this is a true story, there's alternative realistic explanations. You know that one disease which causes wolf-man like hair growth all over? It's quite possible that a Russian peasant family had a child with said disease and, upon finding it out for what it was, abandoned it, probably deep in the woods so no one would know. The child managed to survive in the wilderness somehow, and grew up feral. There are instances of this happening to other children, albeit without the hair growth. Then, given that during WW2 the Soviets spent a lot of time trying to form a single contiguous front, he was eventually located in these wilds and captured.
>>
>>33924185
We wont know for certain, but what we do know is that if the Soviets encountered a peaceful Yeti, they would execute him for being a German spy.
>>
>>33924064

I believe there's a similar story about the first emperor of China setting his throne on the beach and ordering his men to attack the ocean in order to prevent the incoming tide from getting his feet wet.

It's documented form several sources that he regularly drank "longevity elixirs" containing mercury. The Romans were also known to enjoy wine from lead lined amphora because they claimed the metal "improved the taste."

So yeah. Couple of crazy fuckers in a position of power suffering the effects of heavy metal poisoning.

Seems like a reasonable time to bring up Micheal Aquino.

A Ghost, huh? OK, try to imagine yourself in the Australian Outback. You get your first look at this "ghost" as you enter a clearing. He moves like a bird, lightly, bobbing his head. And you keep still because you think that maybe his visual acuity is based on movement like Bigfoot - he'll lose you if you don't move. But no, not an Emu. You stare at him, and he just stares right back. And that's when the attack comes. Not from the front, but from the side,
from the other two Emus you didn't even know were there. Because the Emu's a pack hunter, you see, he uses coordinated attack patterns and he is out in force today. And he slashes at you with this...
A six-inch retractable claw, like a razor, on the the middle toe. He doesn't bother to bite your jugular like a lion, say... no no. He slashes at you here, or here... Or maybe across the belly, spilling your intestines. The point is, you are alive when they start to eat you. So you know, try to show a little respect.

what would be the first things a "special forces" group with modern tech rig up first if they truly were fighting the supernatural, one with all the fantasy tropes?

Silver tipped bullets? Garlic infused smoke grenades and full-spectrum lights for vampires?

Alot of Roman pipes were made out of lead.
>>
>>33927706
Lead pipes aren't actually *that* dangerous, especially if they're older. Sediments tends to collect on the interior which protects against lead particulates getting swept into the water.

>Caligula declared war on Neptune

From what I've read it's most likely a myth based on misinterpreted facts. It's hard to say, as it often goes with history.
>>
>>33928302
Eh. Caligula did a lot of other crazy/kooky shit, often just because he could. Wouldn't surprise me.
>>
>>33928117
He's actually correct though.

Hell a LOT of domestic water systems still have lead pipes in them. Particularly in Europe and the eastern US. It's really simply not a concern.

Well, it wasn't the pipes, it was switching to a cheaper purifying compound that caused corrosion and lead leeching in the pipes
>>
>>33928891
Yeah, one thing to keep in mind is that a lot of things we "know" may be "fuck this guy" modifications made to the history 50-100 years later by people not wanting to be decapitated by the current rulers.

Richard III is a great example of being repainted by the Tudor usurpers (literally, the official portrait was painted over to look like he had a hump) as a malformed petty tyrant.

Propaganda against him most likely. The currently accepted theory is that, as his troops refused to board the ships that would take them to Britania, he ordered them to stab their swords into the surf, and leave them as they collected shells in their helmets as punishment. Letting your gladius rust a HUGE dishonor among soldiers, and the shells were to take place of their pay for the campaign.
>>
>>33929179
You're not wrong. A lot of what we know about a few emperors (Caligula and Tiberius) comes from the Roman writer Suetonius, who is likely the Roman equivalent of onion news
