The M27, why does it exist?
>>
To make /k/ mad.
>>
>>33922104

because nobody wants to carry a SAW and the SAW itself is a piece of exploding shit
>>
>>33922104
Marines wanted a new infantry weapon so they pulled some sneaky shit to get it approved
>>
>>33922104
Because people fall for the H&K rifle meme.
>>
>>33922120
Why not just carry an M4 or M16 then?
>>
>>33922113
fpbp
>>
>>33922120
Except it isn't replacing the SAW at all, but supplementing it
>>
>>33922104
Marines are memelords and wanted the most memey AR.
>>
Because muh piston

I'm still trying to figure out why it's the M27 and not the Mk. 27, since it's a Marine-only gun
>>
Theres a lot of theories about if this was the USMC pulling a fast one in order to get new service rifles, but its hard to say. All that can be said with any certainty is that the Marines endeavored to adopt a heavy barreled AR for what they claimed was the automatic rifle role. In light of that, I think they should have just issued their old MK12 uppers with automatic lowers, but what do I know?

To simultaneously screw over and piss off one of the AR-15's original design crew who made the first version of the rifle HK stole and dubbed the IAR, they then switched to the current iteration which is just HK shit.

>>
>>33923379
Pistol magazine. I'm surprised no one jumped on him for using it, that's ALICE pattern.
>>
>>33922104
They didnt want to copy the army with the M4 so they need their own special snowflake rifle
>>
>>33923409
B8, no one is this retarded.
>>
>>33922104
Because its gas system doesnt melt after 2 belts mostly. Its also easier to keep clean in dusty environments.

Not being belt fed is a major drawback though.

Marines dont follow the Army mostly because the Army are retards. See green ammo and the USMCs "thats fucking retarded" response
>>
>>33923509
There has been a big influx of "how do you do fellow memers" who are spouting contextually wrong and dead memes. I blame it on /pol/ attracting the attention of reddit, and now that /pol/ is completely dominated by redditors, they are spreading to the other boards.
>>
>>33922218
holy fuck that pic looks interesting, is that yours anon?
>>
>>33923529

Is that what happened? Havent been around in about a year. /k/ was always slightly retarded in the lovingly retarded way... get drunk and think "fuck yea lets chill on 4chan" and come here to endless "famas" comments and topics.

/pol/ died months ago. Didnt really think that would translate to /k/ though. :( I miss opchan
>>
>>33923620
Ya, now it's constant vidya threads, 16 year holds arguing how their shitty 10/22 is totally an effective combat rifle, and that boring stuff about /k/ being progressive.

At least there was a Fronk dump yesterday. Shit was cozy.
>>
>>33923620
It's just my guess of course. /pol/ is clearly reddit as you can find a lot of reddit drama and screencaps there now. /pol/ has been mentioned by pretty mainstream guys (I think Rush Limbaugh even has mentioned them in passing) which attracted the attention of people turning it into le Donald Trump memewars board.

Speculation is that it is only natural for new people jumping into 4chan to start exploring other boards. /k/ is one of the boards that overlaps in appeal with normies infecting /pol/, so it's only natural for them to come here.

It's all just a personal guess, but there has been a lot more overusage of memes and aggressive pushes to colonize this as a political board. It's annoying.
>>
>>33922129

Because it's better at accurate suppressing fire over distance.

Handles sustained fire better.

Arguably more accurate.
>>
>>33922144

It wasn't developed by DoN. It was developed by DoA, and only adopted by the marines.
>>
>>33923698
Piston being more accurate than direct impingement? First I or any precision semi-auto maker has heard of that. Please tell me why barrel harmonics are a meme.
>>
>>33923773
It is supposedly more accurate thanks to the truly free floating barrel and heavier barrel.

Trigger is better too, since it doesn't have the ratcheting mechanism standard in burstfire M16A4s and M4s.

Best source I can dig up on a pinch.
http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/story/military/tech/2015/02/16/deadlier-rifles-ammo-may-way/23369675/
>>
>>33923843
So literally just a free float barrel puts shit-tier M16A4's on par with this thing that has a better trigger, free float, and heavy barrel...

Like I said, piston is great- to a degree, but it is never more accurate than an equivalent direct impingement, inherently due to the piston action its self.
>>
>>33923902
I'm not claiming that, just showing sources. I'm also not saying that piston is more accurate, however the whole rifle as a package is more accurate than M16A4s. Take of it what you will.
>>
>>33923930
And I'm saying that's a stupid reason, going back to what the previous anon was asking.

See? Communication.
>>
>>33922104
because the Army didn't cooperate with SOCOM to make changes to the M4 TDP as a standalone weapon system rather than an non optimized but parts interchangeable with the M16A2. This lead to the SCAR program which planted the seeds of doubt that the M4 is not a suitable weapon. Combine that with fuddlore of ordinance board dicked upped M16 from Vietnam, shitty cleaning and maintenance procedures, and a ton of shilling in the early 00-10s for a replacement. Finally the Army made the upgrades (ie new extractor springs, H buffer, M4 feed ramps, etc etc), but the reputation is still tarnished. The Marines fall for the piston meme but cant justify a new service rifle. Instead of modernizing because M4s and A4s are in the same configuration from the 90s , they will just buy more M27 until the grunts and recon are happy.
>>
>>33923941
>Orignal anon starting this chain:
>>33923698
His claim: "The M27 is more accurate than the M16A4 or M4". He did not specify which components produced this, only the end result.

>You (I presume):
>>33923773
Bringing in DI vs. piston, as well as saying that a piston rifle can't be more accurate.

>Facts:
The M27 is more accurate than the M16A4 or M4 in their current configurations. 2MOA compared to 4-4.5MOA.

Can an impingement rifle be modified to be more accurate than the M27? Yes.

Is that relevant to weather or not the M27 is more accurate than existing M16A4s? No.

I'm sure the next question down your pointed line of reasoning would be, "then why not just use free floating M16A4s!". Going back to:>>33923698, you will notice that accuracy is not the only factor. Sustained automatic fire is also a factor, leading to the heavier barrel and the piston system.

In conclusion, I'm not sure what your point is except to be incredulous when presented with the specs as they exist about current military equipment.
>>
>>33924015
Got your anons confused friendo.

Because the staggering fucking ignorance of military brass (especially Marine Corps) is so massive that gravity defies the laws of physics, and not even light itself can escape.

That is compounded by politicians and backroom bribery.

It is literally a system that kills thousands upon thousands of their own men by simply lacking work ethic and having their pockets stuffed with small amounts of change. It's nothing new, I've been observing this shot since the early 70s, and it happened long before then.

Government is horrible and should be abolished. In other news, water is wet.
>>
>>33922104
>Lighter and More Versatile than M249
>Piston and stronger barrel make for better durability from automatic fire; M4 was not originally designed as a primary infantry weapon; can pop the gas tube if fired to much, too fast; barrel heat treatment can be undone if it gets too hot.
>Same manual of arms and caliber as M4; saves on training and logistics.
>Piston removes rick of a pressure explosion in the gas tube, should water get in.
>Military procurement LOVES to try to get do-it-all weapons and vehicles. They fail 99% of the time, (see F-35).
>>
>>33924015
So your argument is to adopt the $3000 platform, and not, you know, the $100 free float handguard.

That's real fucking neeto.
>>
>>33922104
Because the Marines are retarded. This was around at the same time, takes SAW belts and can also be quickly converted to original configuration to take Stagnag magazines. Just put it in a CAR format and there you go, the perfect LMG.
>>
>>33924117
One, I'm not arguing to adopt anything. I am pointing out the current capabilities of the different weapons as they exist in their current configurations.

Two, a free floating barrel may improve accuracy, but it ignores the other factor in the weapon's use, which is sustained automatic fire, something the M16A4 or M4 are also not suited for.
>>
>>33923671
Man, /pol/ is just a burning trashcan now.
Just a bunch of edgy 15 year old Trump-fanatics shouting about the END OF THE WORLD AND OH NO AND SOCIALISM AND EUROKEKS and, and, and.
Just a bad time, overall.

>>

I mean, even when its political stuff I support, it's annoying as shit to have it bleed over into other boards.

>>33924815
>/pol/ is the same
Nah dude, it feverishly covers reddit drama and screenshots. There's a lot of "lol kek!" shit. And the whole "muh shills" accusations flying at obvious b8 is stuff old /pol/ never would have gone for.

As for "muh shills" on /k/, I honestly don't know if it's legit anti-Trump shills, people doing le Epic trolling, or intentional false flagging by Trump supporters to turn people against "democrat shills". Honestly I don't give a fuck what it is, I just want it gone.

H&K has their cock firmly down the throat of somebody in appropriations in the US Military. It's the only explanation for how the XM8 lasted as long as it did and for how the USMC is trying to stealth the 416 in as a general infantry rifle.
>>
>>33924155
>>33924117
this board is so fucking autistic, jesus christ. it physically pains me to think of each of you sitting at a computer getting assblasted because some rando somewhere disagrees with the US adopting a rifle.
I don't even want to make fun of you, it's just upsetting
>>
>>33924039
>Lighter and More Versatile than M249
We've been over this countless times for decades; SAWs are better belt-fed. The M27 isn't even open bolt.

>Piston and stronger barrel make for better durability from automatic fire; M4 was not originally designed as a primary infantry weapon; can pop the gas tube if fired to much, too fast; barrel heat treatment can be undone if it gets too hot.
The same shit's going to happen to these as they cut corners to save money.

>Piston removes rick of a pressure explosion in the gas tube, should water get in.
Never been a problem.

>Military procurement LOVES to try to get do-it-all weapons and vehicles. They fail 99% of the time, (see F-35).
>Same manual of arms and caliber as M4; saves on training and logistics.

One of several guns that make the anti 2mer's look like fops.
>>
>>33922190
>but it's hard to say
No it's fucking not.

They bought and fielded a shitload of M27's. The M27's went to riflemen, not machinegunners. They have gotten rid of exactly zero M249's, and have actually expanded the role of the M249.
>>
>>33925967
Makes it look impressive to the gun-illiterates.

Same reason every anime that involves even tertiary violence has impractically enormous weaponry in them.
>>
Probably has to do with HK beginning to manufacture in the U.S., the muhreens can get their special snowflake rifle on the cheap.
>>
>>33928987

What a beautiful piece of shit
>>
There is absolutely nothing wrong with spending peanuts on procuring a new rifle. This is something that should be happening regularly, some officer empowered to go out and buy something without a stupid fucking bureaucratic development program/oversight committees

>>33928941
That ain't true, its mostly quasi-ironic brown/black people.
>>
>>33927899
Muhreens are dumb but not THIS dumb.
>>
>>33931539
Just buying new M249s, M4A1s and M16A4s is cheaper and does the same thing.
>>
>>33922104
its a mix between the dmr and the saw role, eighter more precise longrange fire than m4/16 and better sustained fire than m4/16
>>
>>33924039
see us army fucking ucp camo
>>
>>33922104

because officers would rather force grunts to abandon belt feed and drums for a literal backpack full of magazines less the backpack. seriously, issued twenty one mags but only mag pouches for six.

I'm sure some bean counter sold the idea that it was cheaper to field these and reduce ammo use than it was to keep fixing busted saws and buying so much belted 5.56.
