The most incredible part of the electrified swamp thing is not even that that the Iraqis had the effort to bring in a fucking huge generator to the area, but the fact that they then started to collect the now rigid body of Iranians electrocuted to build improvised bridges, so their trucks could pass through the swamp.

Was stationed in the Basra province right up on the Iranian border during OIF. There was tons of sharpnel and scrapped vehicles, bombs sticking out of the ground and minefields everywhere. A cow stepped on one and was getting butchered on the side of the road as we rolled by. I saw a boot with a skeleton foot in it, and a leg bone sticking out of the ground nearby. I remember seeing an abandoned home near a minefield, and seeing a little tiny kids footprint on a rusty mine that failed to go off. I wish I had gotten a picture of it. Lots of shit like that.

>They made their way through the marshes, gathering up the dead Iranian soldiers like dynamite fishermen harvesting a day's catch. Working methodically, the Iraqis piled the corpses on top of one another in the water in head-to-toe stacks, five bodies high and five across.
>Together, the human piles formed long rows, the width of a troop truck, the top layers above the water's surface. Each row extended in a straight line through the marshes from the Iraqis' positions toward the Iranian border. Finally, the rows were sprinkled with lime and covered over with a foot-thick tier of desert sand.
You bet.
>>33922965
Arabs are well known for exaggerating or straight up making shit up
There probably was bodies floating around, or a few piled up, but not trenches built from the corpses of human remains

Also the shit I've posted so far is of the Iranians. The Iraqis tended not to go with full beards but did rock mustaches pretty hard. Plus they had slightly better equipment/uniform standardization.
Did the Iraqis have Yugo/Serbian pattern AKs back then?
>>33924667
They had a mix of stuff. Both sides used a hodgepodge of AKs from wherever they could get them. Here's an East German MPi in Iranian service.

My brother was in Iraq for a few summers doing research. One summer a couple of his students took him to climb a mountain near the Iranian border. Only once they were near the top did they decide to tell him the mountain was mined from the Iran-Iraq war and to be careful. He took a bunch of pictures of old Iraqi emplacements, Iranian rockets, etc. Wish I had some of the pictures.
And yeah Iraqis and the like are total idiots with no regard for their safety. Brother told me how they all believe that "Allah will protect me" and just don't give a shit.

I suppose it could also be a natural or semi-natural ravine. I've never really seen any good photographic overviews of field fortifications during the war but the trenches often seem to lack even basic traverse structure.
That's actually quite some footage, but holy shit does it make both sides look incompetent.
The thing people need to realize when they say things like "my God it was WWI in the 80s!!" is that trench warfare is actually fucking inevitable anymore even with all our technological wonders if both sides are unable or unwilling to keep up their strategic mobility. Look at any post-WWII conventional conflict of any scale and you will see that the overwhelming majority of them involve at least a partial but substantial phase of positional-warfare trench slogging. This applies even to contemporary conflicts in the Ukraine, Syria, etc. This has been the case since around the time of the ACW and Crimean War and will continue to be the case into the future, especially with global instability and stagnant technological progression.

>>33924906
To me, "modern" Warfare just means "takes place in urban environments". My conception of pre-WW1 war is combat in fields and rural areas where you need to create cover rather than cities and towns where you just fight amongst the civilian buildings.

>>33922334
Damn I always wondered where those leather mag pouches came from. You see them in pictures all decorated with bling.
>>33924941
Not localized to pre-WWI at all. Do you know how barren the central Russian plain is? The Kursk Salient had trench systems so extensive they could wrap to London and back. I'm not saying the presence of trenches and earthworks constitutes trench warfare, because obviously the Germans mounted a very mobile offensive operation and the Russians a very mobile counter-offensive. What I'm saying is that combat is going to always happen in these environments, the overwhelming majority of earth is not urban. And since it will always happen in these environments, soldiers will always dig in when not on the move. And if they no longer have their mobility, or never had any mobility, but still have plenty of small arms and artillery...
You also have situations like in the Korean War, where UN forces were no longer allowed to push further north due to politics at a certain point. So now you're sitting on some Godforsaken hill in an artificial stalemate with a billion screaming Chinamen on the other Godforsaken hill half a kilometer away, and you're not going anywhere.

Did a bit of googling, and came up with this:
https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_7_170/1605253_.html&page=1
and this:
http://mecollectibles.com/en/166-headbands
They seem to be generally a dedication to a Shi'a martyr, I guess kinda like Catholics carrying medallions of saints as some sort of voodoo protection.
Most seem to be invoking this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Husayn_ibn_Ali
Although I saw one example from the Syrian war which was invoking his daughter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukayna_bint_Husayn
And I'm back. Going to make a few quick distinctions here
>Pasdaran
Another name for Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, usually their infantry. The IRGC grew to prominence during the war for supplying a lot of the manpower when the army was deficient. Religious/political military unit, still active today.
>Basij
Militia/volunteers that fall under the IRGC. Lots of these guys were used as cannon fodder during the war.
Typical Iranian assault in the mid war period would look something like this
>Send in Basij first in human wave attacks. Can be used to soak up Iraqi ammo and clear minefields with their bodies
>Occasionally included children in those wave attacks
>Followed up by Pasdaran to try and make a breach
>if a breach was made, regular Artesh (Iranian regular army) would attempt to exploit the breach and push into the Iraqi rear
Usually these succeeded in making at least a breach, at which point the Iraqis would scramble various assets to plug the hole in their lines. Ranging from artillery, airstrikes, and chemical weapons. Hence why you see a lot of Iranians wearing NBC gear.
Also, when you see these blue uniforms they're more than likely Pasdaran. Don't know why they went with blue.
Still don't know why they thought blue was a good idea.
Some pics of the Basij.
>>33922965
I believe you, but not the propaganda article. Have another source?
>>33926706
My mom says i'm a smart boy
Pretty sure these guys are Iranian regulars. Sometimes I have difficulty telling IRGC and Artesh apart since outside of the blue uniforms the IRGC kit looks very similar.
>>33928558
Because blue is the trench warfare color of choice
>>33928680
Historically, blue was chosen for being cheap to produce.
The same reason that a farm's barn is predominately red in the US.

>>33928880

>>33928976
Unfortunately no. Most of what I got came from militaryphotos before they got shut down. Real pissed that they're gone since I used to update my pic folders with their stuff all the time. Now it's back to trawling through old forums and non-English websites (not just for this conflict, there's a lot of shit out there).
>>33928994
Incredibly, Alamy have a good number of somehow rare photos of Iraqi soldiers during the conflict. Of course is a pain that you cant save them without the watermark and stuff, but it would otherwise be impossible to find those same photos somewhere else, I think.

>>33920558
Kinda weird to think that there's a war that happened only 30 years ago, where over a million people died, and almost nobody in the west knows about it.
>>33922309
Bodies aren't sandbags and wouldn't do for a corduroy road through swamp, nor is rigor mortis sufficient to change that reality. Carcasses are sloshy things which decompose rapidly, especially in desert heat.
It's not acceptable for modern humans to be ignorant of how things work in the physical world, or to be ignorant of war yet have strong opinions about it.
>>33923066
>You genuinely believe the Iraqi's built bridges of dead bodies through fucking marshland and had trucks drive across them?
Since they've never driven a military vehicle through mud, let alone over corpses, they believe. They really WANT to believe because their shitty little lives will never get better and the idea of war is dramatic and exciting and fantasy is delicious. War is just like anime. Everything is just like anime.
>Please, Cthulhu, take me into the magic pictures!

Largely overshadowed by the ensuing Gulf War and the other happenings in the world. No one really cares when the Middle Eastern Nations decided to duke it out en masse. Well, maybe nowadays they'll get a popup in their news feed and some talking head will say some bs, but that's about it. There was some insane crazy shit that went down in this war, but generally its only the participants that continue to hold on to those memories.
>>33932034
That's the thing though, ask people why we went into the first Gulf War, and they may know, oh because Iraq invaded Kuwait. Well, why did Iraq invade Kuwait? Cause they're meanies? No, they were in massive debt from a ten year war and needed monies. And without the first Gulf War our modern situation in the ME would be drastically different. The Iran/Iraq war a direct (not the only of course, but a large) cause of our entire current geopolitical situation.

They were used mainly as strategic reserve, launching counter attacks and coming for the rescue whenever the Iranians launched some offensive or achieved a breach in some point of the frontlines. They are also used to good effect as spearhead in the majority of the Iraq offensives, after the initial years of the war, the second battle of al Faw being a example.
Their conventional way of attacking would be simply to shock the enemy first with heavy artillery barrage or chemical weapons, and then exploit it by overwhelming the enemy with numbers.
To sum up: nothing really out of the ordinary, they are just a little better than the conventional forces, and that is really not that much.
