Because the police were pussies. They had an armored vehicle immediately escort all the wounded officers out. However, after the first gunman died, the second surrendered, and the officers refused to let ambulances in to get him for an entire hour, effectively killing him due to blood loss. The cops are massive pussies, they literally just decided to kill him because they were salty as fuck their boys were shot. The guy was pleading for them to shoot him in the head and the officers naturally refused, and just let him sit there suffering, awaiting death. Beyond fucking disgraceful, either shoot him in the fucking head or let him have treatment, what kind of sick twisted fucks just decide to legally torture someone to get back at them? Depends, LA was the bank robbery capital of the US in the 80's because the freeway system allowed a crew to get off one exit, hit a bank and get back on the next freeway ramp well before the cops arrived. Got to the point where certain banks could practically schedule when the next robbery would happen. Now the LAPD operates the largest helicopter fleet around and it's not so easy anymore.

Ya, those too. Never been to LA myself but I've read a fair bit about how the Freeway system has shaped things there. A city's architecture has a big impact on socio-economic issues, including crime. The freeway, on top of the aforementioned bank issue also effectively walled-off whole neighborhoods, leaving them to stagnate and turn rotten. Crime is also higher near LAX, as LAPD helicopters can't patrol there as effectively.

Listening to the radio recording, the dispatcher is professional as ever. You can here her start to crack when she realizes just how many cops have been tagged.

They had worked out that it would take the cops 8 minutes to get to the bank by listening to a police radio. They would be in and out in that time, regardless of whether they got any money. Even had watches with timers on them. They had also knocked over a few banks before and were experienced. Things went south during their heist on the bank of America, because a cop car just happened to be passing by as they walked in. Their entire escape strategy was turned around because the cops were going to show up in force much earlier.

However, they still could have escaped. There were several luls in the initial minutes of conflict where they just stood there shooting at a couple cops who were pinned down. It also took awhile for SWAT to show up. Until then, the bandits were only fighting cops with M9s. They could have easily pushed through before things got too hard to handle, but they didn't. Why? They were both on drugs, also there was a tape of the movie HEAT found at their safe house afterwards.

It's probable that they were acting out some fantasy when they chose to stay and fight.
