>tfw over $3000 of knives on your wishlist

How much is too much?
>>
>>33917605
I'm also looking forward to get one.

>>33917647
If you invest into a custom, you'll even get more out of it in the end.
From the gathered profit you could get the production knives. That's how Jim Skelton does it.
>>
>>33917666
No one listen to Satan, over priced customs a shit.
I understand labor and artistry are what command those prices but super high end customs offer no actual benefit over a production blade.
Just not my cup of tea.
>>
Any advice on putting an edge on my F-S fighting knife? It came from the factory dull. At least I think, unless it's supposed to be that way?

>>33917972
I beg to differ.

Visual artistry isn't that useful, but if we're talking blade geometry and heat treat, a good blade is well worth the extra money over a $50-60 production knife
>>
>>33917972
I think he was saying sell the custom after it goes up in value? However I am too lazy to look into the market to actually make that a thing.

>>33918001
As far as practicality goes, I find most customs are gaudy pocket jewelry with bad geometry ironically enough. I've been happy with the minimalist and practical designs of high end production companies.

>rei also give members 20% off any item once a year
> go buy a benchmade fixed blade for like $40 or a folder for next to nothing
>rei also has a website for those of you who live in the country or your moms basement

Happy shitposting
>>
>>33918001
Except that most companies worth their salt do their heat treatment as accurately as possible.
Spyderco, bench made, hell even crkt all do great jobs with their heat treatment.

As for ergos yeah it's a bit hit or miss with productions, but the sheer volume of unique models really makes the argument pointless.

Why are so many people elitist about their steel?

I'm looking for a fixed blade, Can take a beating, Can be sharpened on a rock if I have to, Around 6 inches and 5mm thick, Sharp point, In either a clip, drop or trailing point, Doesn't rust easy, and the cheaper the better.

How comes I can find 440c,1095, and AUS8 from anywhere between £40-Over £200?

they're impossible to find from retailers now, but you can still find them on the forums
curious to hear what you paid for it, if you don't mind sharing - no pressure though

>>33919976
yes, it's a nice knife - Strider SA with Frag Grips
it's a stout little blade, but not quite as thick as the DB - the one with the cord-wrapped handle.
not really a fan of the cord-wrapped handles
>>
>>33920218
>Strider SA
Is the grind hollow or flat? The thickness seems more than appropriate, anon.
>>
>>33920269
it has a slight hollow grind
the blade thickness is fine, i was just comparing it to the DB, which is absurd - .25"
the DB is intended to be used as a pry tool as well as having the ability to slice

>>
What do you think about chink knives as a budget option? Not talking about fakes but stuff like Ganzo and Sanrenmu.

I know there are cheap lines from Kershaw and CRKT, but they're also made in china and I would have to pay shipping from US, going from a 15 bucks knife to a 30 bucks one.

So, for example, what's the point of buying a CRKT drifter for 30 bucks when I can get a Sanrenmu that is pretty much the same in terms of design and materials for 8?
>>
>>33921314
>I got it for 260
that's a pretty good price, even fro pre-owned

>tiger stripe
the pattern on the blade comes from the heat treating

you'll be able to get the SnG as well as the SMF from Mick, just keep checking his website
looks like they'll be priced at not much more than the original Striders were going for

It's not even about functionality. If you go for the handmade customs you buy a luxury item. People who admire craftmanship and art are into custom knives, it's a passion.
If a specific model, say a Willumsen custom in mint condition pops up on the market 7 years after release, collectors will buy it for one reason or another.
These trades happen privately for the most part.
People post about their offer on forums, join facebook groups or put up an announce on dedicated sites.

>>33919958
Marketing man.
There is a reason Buck and Leatherman don`t upgrade from 420HC, Böker also still uses 440C for most of their locally made knives, they know their shit. The knife industry is heavily dependant on creating new wishes.
If you take a look at the tools actual craftsmen use, you will see that they don't have anything fancy on them and are happy with their choice.
The hunters I know use cheap no name shit and have no complains, they just sharpen it with a kitchen steel and go with it.

>>33921508
I have some Ganzo knives. They develop vertical play after a short time and QC is a hit and miss. Pivot screw gets loose easy and needs locktite. Steel rolls over easily.
BUT
For the 11 bucks it's good deal, better than all the gas station and walmart shit.

Sanrenmu is based, very good product check out their 910+ made in Taiwan with ball bearings and Sandvik steel.

Ruike is a trending company, which has the same Taiwanese producer Böker uses for its "plus" line.
The prices are extremely low for the quality you get.

Picked this guy up. CRKT Outrage. Saw the IKBS flipper and the price and had to try it out. Overall I think it's an awesome knife for the money. A few things holding it back from being a really great knife.

Pros...
>Price
>IKBS flipper
>decent cheap steel that is easy to sharpen and takes a wicked edge (same stuff in the Spyderco Tenacious)
>no lock stick
>perfect centering
>no blade play
>flipper is breaking in and rockets open
>good ergonomics
>deep carry clip with good retention
>>
>mother, I am knifefag
>son, I am of dissapoint
>>
>>33924717

Cons...
>fit and finish on scales is shit, knicks everywhere
>grip is missing needed thickness in palm
>plastic backspacer with horrible finish
>scales feel cheap and plastic, even though metal
>HEAVY
>gimping on spine is too slippery
>pocket clip has a bit of a sharp point

Biggest complaint for the price is just the simple ergos. If it had more in the palm and a better grip it would be A+. If it had better fit and finish, better steel and fixed the previously said problems and didn't cost much more than $50 and it would an amazing Delica 4 alternative.

>Kershaw Leek

I got one a few years ago and really like it, it's probably the second nicest pocket knife that I own. I can wear it when I dress up and it doesn't seem out of place like my oldass Gerber.

>Ka Bar

Underrated. People do dumb shit with them and break them and then claim that they're bad knives and then other people say the same thing even if they haven't even handled one. They're not the knife for you if you think a knife should be able to do absolutely everything but they'll handle everything a Mora can and they're also great for stabbing people, which is almost everything.

That said, I tend to recommend the BK7 over the Kabar because Kabar has gotten dumb with their prices and frankly the BK7 is a better knife for the same price.

>>
>>33928623
Necessary? No. Nice to have? Potentially, provided you can carry it comfortably and discretely.

If you're getting by okay with a fairly delicate folder like an Endura, I'd be looking at shit like the Bark River Bird and Trout Knife, or Spyderco Sprig (which is longer than you asked for but a very good blade profile for EDC), or the Spyderco Street Beat.

You really can't beat a mora for a beater knife. They're a meme for a reason. I would not hesitate to strap one on and beat the fuck out of it day in and day out.

For work you want something dependable, sharp, comfortable in hand with a comfy handle, and easy to unsheath and resheath.

If I'm carrying a fixed blade at work I usually carry one of these two

so i know literally nothing about knives or bayonets but i picked up an old bayonet today at a flea market just because i thought it would be neat to own. i have a question though.

when i pulled the blade out of its scabbard it was all oily. is it supposed to be stored in that state? is it always supposed to have oil on it?

i assumed oil was only used for cleaning it but like i said i dont know anything.

id imagine the blade would be a lot nicer to look at if i wiped it all off but maybe that's a bad idea?

>complaining about elitism when knows nothing about knives
Kek. Hopefully I can straighten out any misconceptions your mall-ninja mind has thought up on the matter.
Steel is literally everything in a knife. It wouldn't be a knife without it. Just a steel plate with a sharp edge can be a knife if used properly.
My minimum allowable steel is VG-10. Anything under is just a "budget" knife meant to learn on or get started with. Steels like 440C and 8Cr13MoV are really terrible in all aspects when compared to even modern mid-range steels like S30V. Don't buy 440C or AUS-8 (save for the Ontario RAT, they're decent for the money). 440 used to be good back in the day, but has become outdated and relegated to budget knives. It was also a widely misunderstood steel when it was the best, as every brand under the sun marked their knives with the steel when it could have been Chinesium pot metal.
Esee, Becker, and Ontario make good carbon steel fixed blades, most of which fit your specifications. Take a look at their lineups.
>doesn't rust easy
Most fixed blades in carbon or semi-stainless steels come with anti-rust coatings, but really its up to the user to make sure this doesn't happen. There are various oils and protective coatings you can put on your blade, and obviously don't leave the blade wet when used around water, and store in a dry environment.
>sharpened on a rock
That's called freehand sharpening. Pretty much any knife (save for recurves and serrations) can be freehand sharpened, but it takes lots of practice.
>>
>>33931211
Chinese Microtech clones, hit and miss quality, unknown steel, and morality of clones.
"Lightning" brand OTF (not that great, clunky and 440C for $50 no thanks).
There's not really anything else. In my opinion, you're paying for the novelty, so the only brand that makes the novelty knives decently is worth picking up, even if it is Micromeme. The Elmax steel and fuckton of options for configuration make the $250 seem appealing for a DA OTF, but that's just my opinion, man.

Probably around $100, but if I know it's well made and going to last I don't really have a budget.

Small enough to fit in my pocket, but not too small.

Just utility purposes. I always seem to find myself in a spot where having a knife would be handy. I get a lot of packages too and I've been using an xacto knife or just a kitchen knife which has gotten annoying.

What you're looking for is a sub 4 inch blade locking folder for all around EDC. In which case I recommend:
>Spyderco Paramilitary 2 $120: definitely worth the extra 20, one of the most well built and well designed knives in history, comes in a variety of blade steels, and is fairly priced.
>Benchmade Mini Griptilian $90: I consider these to be absurdly overpriced, considering the materials are low end and Benchmade's reputation for hit and miss quality, but the warranty and great lock type might be your speed. A bit heavy and wide though.
>Spyderco Delica $65: a little cheaper but quality built, just sacrificing steel and lock type. The back lock is not an easy 1-hand operation, the blade steel is a bit fragile, but the size and versatility make up for it.
>Zero Tolerance 0450 $160: again, worth going over your budget, the build quality, materials, and warranty are great, it's an amazingly universal design, and the price is definitely fair for what you're getting. Fun opening mechanism, titanium handles make it light.
>Spyderco Manix 2 G10 $120: uses a similar lock to the Benchmade Griptilian previously mentioned, but with Spyderco's great quality and materials at a fairer price. Thinner, but heavier than the Paramilitary 2, with ambidextrous controls. Avoid the "LW" or "Lightweight" versions, they can't be disassembled for maintenance.
There are some brands you should avoid, though.
>Kershaw: Decent build quality, but uses low end materials for medium prices, and has some poor designs in the sub $100 range.
>CRKT: hit and miss quality control, unique and solid designs, nice IKBS bearings in most knives make for good action, but they use the same low quality materials as Kershaw, but sell for even higher, and don't have much of a warranty.
>SOG: another case of low end materials this time at high prices, often use "tacticool" designs which aren't for everyone, again hit and miss quality, and a mediocre warranty.
>Gerber: AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

second run evans companion in s35vn
love/have used the fuck out of it,

it came a little duller than my autistically high standards prefer so i went ham with my knockoff apex edge pro i got from ebay and strop made from balsa wood and a belt

with a lot of obsessing and autism involving my poorfag rig i managed to get it to a legitimate straight razor tier edge using 800/1000/3000/6000/8000/10000/12000 grit stones to really
polish the motherfuck out of it.

it's held that edge pretty phenomenally for about ten months with a bit of stropping here and there, haven't touched it with a stone since

Does anybody know which manifacturer currently supplies the Gurkhas with Kukris?
>>
Anyone know where to get a cheap type II AKM bayonet in Canada? Preferably Bakelite, but I don't care too much.
>>
>>33937260

The Indian Gurkhas, or the British? For Indian, it's Windlass, for British, no idea. I know HI did one a while back, and Tora makes great ones based on WWI/WWII regimental models.

>love/have used the fuck out of it

Noice

>>33937260
I'm fairly certain that there's more than one. IIRC both Windlass and Kukri House claim to be suppliers and it wouldn't surprise me if individual kamis were involved too. I'd say go with something from Himalayan Imports or Tora if you can afford them, they're top tier. I have a Windlass and it's OK, I'm amazed at how well it's performed for a $30 knife.

Also, do you mind if I ask why you're asking? I've been seeing this question a lot recently both here and on reddit, I figure a kukri was recently featured in a popular show or something.

3/10, Can't believe someone took the effort to type this.
>>
>>33928760
Striderbro! Yeah the smf would have been my first choice.but i see more smgs on the secondary market.
>>
>>33937349
British of cause, Windlass is extremely cheap and I wondered if they were "the conservative and reasonable choice" still producing for the Assam rifles. I read that the British Gurkhas weren't satisfied with their quality and switched to nepali made Kukris a long time ago.

>>33937880
Okay? Hmm, I googled it and only found posts from 9 years ago.
No, I am just a knife dude and a kukri is next on my list, so I want to get the most authentic model. The different smithies say something about a competition being held yearly for who will win the contract with the British army Gurkhas.

Until now, Tora seems to be the best choice by far, with Simon Hengle, being a true expert and very passionate about kukris, while also having many contacts with Gurkha veterans seems to know his shit pretty well.

I also found this German guy, Michael Held, to whom I talked to on phone, he also runs his own workshop in Nepal and is borderline autistic about Kukris (It's *Khukuri* he corrected me.), also having a large historical collection; hell he even uses them for cooking on a regular basis.
He does HRC tests after every badge because different parts of the blade are used for different tasks. All german customers are fanatic about how good the quality is, pic in former post is the officer's model.
I still asked myself if they are so happy because they don't know other brands.
http://www.gurkha-imports.com/de/katalog/khukuris-a-z
( The workshop ) http://www.gurkha-imports.com/de/gurkha-imports/uber-die-schmiede

I will either get one from him (saving money and the long wait) or a Tora I think.

hey dude
it seems like SMF's are starting show up for sale on the forums again after the original panic casued by Strider Knives 'closing' shop
i like the SnG, but they're just a little small for my paw. i'd like to get an SnG XL - they're a bit bigger than the SMF. pretty difficult to find too
these knives are all overpriced as fuck, but they feel so good in your hand.

if you like Striders, you may also like Emerson

>real x105CrMo17 is a shit steel
It is even used for ball bearings and for applications "with highest wear".
China fucked up the reputation of 440c in the states by printing it on unhardened scrap metal blades. If there is a company that knows it's shit, it's Böker and 440c made in EU is their main steel.

>>33936577
Not all 440C and AUS-8 are created equal. Good heat / cryo treatments can make these very decent

>>33937012
>There are some brands you should avoid, though.
>Kershaw

Just because they don't use the same autistic "super steelz" as spyderco does doesn't mean they're bad. Kershaw puts out the best designs in the <$50 range. If I want to get a gift or a non-knife friend asks for something practical with low budget, Kershaw is the first I recommend.

Nice, I'd love one of these. Shame it's many months wait and about that whole Bark River Fiasco. Seriously, fuck Bark River forever after that bullshit

what happened?
>>
>>33942735
Bark River was supposed to deliver a huge run of Evans Companions, but they were delayed for months and months with no sign of delivery in sight, with Evans thousands of dollars in the hole. He had no choice but to cancel the contract and demand a refund, refunding many customers who waited for almost a year. Pretty sad. Basically, Mike Stewart from bark River is a complete asshole and con man.

If you wanna read the whole story check out the Evans knife section on Bladeforums
