>Intellectual property which stimulates more innovation
This is the premise that I don't hold to be necessarily true. Imagine the case where intellectual property law did not afford monopolies on designs and inventions; companies would have to keep innovating new and better products to stay profitable, as their "old" products would "age" faster in that copies and cheaper derivatives would pop up sooner. If anything it seems to me that innovation and development would be increased.

Let us know how big of a difference at 18" barrel makes compared to a 14.5" assuming you're using good ammo like a 70gr TSX. 18" today with the good ammo we have is pointless.

Assuming it's accurate with the bullet weight you plan to use then yeah. Look at a ballistics chart m8. It's negligible and literally no meaning worth mentioning when comparing 16 to 18

I mean, I like the aesthetics on some 18" builds but practically speaking if you have an accurate barrel that's 16" and you are using good ammo it's almost 0 benefit imo. Like I said all you are doing is adding weight and MAYBE gain 100 fps or something like that. Plenty to knock a small critters dick in the dirt. Ask giddy

Variables are less expensive but 1x is useless. You'll leave it at 4 or 6x most of the time, try shooting it at 1x like a red dot and realize it's retarded unless you want to spend $1500 on a high quality variable.

ACOGs are cool, the glass is great, but they aren't worth the money imo. Maybe if you can get a used one for a good price.

Weight is about the same for either depending on model. The Trijicon AccuPower with a Aero light weight mount is 2oz heavier than a TA31 w/ LaRue mount.

In my experience, no. Then again it wasn't a Steiner, it was a Vortex PST Gen 1. If my eye was even slightly off at 1x there was heavy shadowing and the reticle illumination wasn't visible.

I couldn't adjust the front sight post even one click, so I gave up trying to zero it out of frustration. I know how far it was off so once I figure out how to move the front sight post without Giddying it to dust, I will.

tl;dr was shooting about 1" at 25 yards (but 6" high), so ~4 MOA with Wolf Gold using irons.

Honestly though my Steiner and a PST aren't that far away from each other in price. However I will admit that not all 1x are created equal. I guess ultimately my point is just that you can have very good red dot type performance with a variable optic and you can definitely do it under $1000

dpms high vs low is the height of the reciever. it matters when youre buying a rail bc presumably, youll want the rail to be level to the receiver. g2 is the newest thing, a slimmed down version, it doesnt fit with anything but g2 stuff. pick out a receiver set you want and go from there

It's a sloppy as fuck military firearm designed for reliability and quick manufacture, it's never going to be precise.

It's hard enough to get an AR to do under 1.5 MOA no matter how much money you put into it, I think your friend likely just had unrealistic expectations from a very inexpensive upper.

If you're not honestly going to spend the saved $450 on shooting over the next few months, buy once cry once. Get the Trijicon. It'll hold value better, and perform better.

I spent $220 total on my PA MD ADS. It would have been good to just spend the extra $400 and get an Aimpoint T2. Granted I spent that $400 on other firearm related stuff though.
