I don't know much about modern rifles but I hear Savage Axis are pretty decent cheap bolt actions, available in various calibers. Otherwise don't bother with any milsurp, the days of the good cheap shit are gone

Note: I will likely be called wrong shortly, also take /k/'s advice with a grain of salt, supplement with google

Trigger's stiff but not unmanageable. I like them. They feel much higher quality than they have any right to for the price.

If you're looking for a full size pistol I'd recommend it. For CC just get a shield, they're right around the same price right now anyway. I found one for sale that came with 4 mags that clocked in at just under $300 including transfer fee.

Bersa Thunder and S&W SD9 are in your price range. RIA GI 1911, good luck. For a first gun there's about 60-100$ of just red tape and basic accessories you're going to need. Unless it's $300 or under you can't afford it.
Or unless you're willing to spend more money.

Also don't be afraid of used guns. Consignments and 50+ year old pistols don't need to be on roster. Rifle-wise you sometimes find milsurp at reasonable prices.
Shotguns are also very good value. You can get a genuinely good one for $300 easy.
Also there are rimfire rifles. You could get a Ruger 10/22, Marlin 795 or 60 for around $200. But for $70-100 you can usually find an old dusty bolt-action .22 rifle from the 60s with plenty of life still left in it. People don't seem to care about them, so they are available cheap. Heck, find a good used 12 or 20ga shotgun (maybe pump, maybe single-shot) and an old .22 rifle in the same store and you can probably put them both on the same DROS for like $270 OTD.

>featureless ar15
Not for $400 in CA. More like $500.
>ar15 made featureless with MEAN Arms stripper clip-o-rama
It's kinda neat but will push your price up.
>SU-16
Again not for $400 and they are rare. Also kinda flimsy.
>Mini-14
Cheapest I've ever seen one is $500 and they're not bad honestly. Go for a newer 580+ serial prefix due to the improved barrel. Just expect to replace the rear sight if it hasn't been replaced yet.
>>33916354
If you find one in CA it'll cost about the same or more than a used 3rd gen Glock which is a better gun.

Eh, 9x18mm Makarov is a hair more powerful than .380 ACP, which is generally considered the minimum acceptable for self defense. The ergonomics and accuracy of the gun are surprisingly good for a Soviet weapon, and with modern hollowpoints it's a respectable choice imo.

Between it and a 9mm Hi-point I honestly would lean more toward the Makarov, just for the smaller size, better build quality, and ergonomics.

(Though I'd probably just drop an additional $100 and buy an S&W SD9 or Canik TP9, if not a police trade-in Glock. Anon might be really poor though, and not have an extra Benjamin.).
>>
>>33916979
Featureless is probably the best option here. After taking my bullet buttoned rifle to the range and having a few malfunctions, I realized that not being able to drop the magazine and clear a malfunction could be very dangerous.

Though if you're willing to leave the .223 cartridge entirely, M1 Carbine would be a good choice. Ammo's a bit pricey, but the parts are still widely available and the gun is light and handy: a solid choice for home defense. If you'd like to nonpermanently mod it, an Ultimak with a red dot sight (Primary Arms MD-ADS would be my vote) when you have more shekels would round it out nicely.

It's honestly a great gun for the money you pay. I've tried other guns in the price range but none of them had as good of a trigger as the TP9SF does out of the box.

I don't think it should be ignored because it comes from a shitty fucking country, because it beats the he'll of it of a lot of other budget options. I'd take it over a fucking SDV9 or an SR9 or fucking whatever.

That said, once I have the money I fully intend to replace it with a P320, because I don't like supporting the Turks either, but if I'm gonna buy a gun I want to get the best I can get for whatever it is I'm spending than get some piece of shit. Other budget options don't have 18 round mags either, as far as I'm aware.

M&P Sport and Sport II each have/had cheapout issues, but it's not poorfag shit. The Sport lacked an ejection port cover which is a fairly large flaw. The Sport II is 1:9, and the Sport II and AR-556 are both 4140.

>needing to lock your guns up

Maybe if u live in some liberal hellhole. At worst in normal america you just lock them in a closet or a bedroom if there are children around.

Mine sits on my bed

again

fuck bigbox roaches - don't support capitalist gouging.

My local range/store: Beretta 92fs $650, gen 3 Glock 17 $569, Shield 9mm $445. Why support any local business when they price themselves out of the market? Small local FFL dealers operating out of their residence offer better prices and undercut big box transfer fee. Fuck a greedy cunts profit margin.

Am I the only one who thinks these are XBOX HUEG and feel like shit in the hands? I wanted one until my brother got one and I tried it out. The thing's a fucking brick and the grip/beavertail is so poorly designed it's impossible to get a proper high grip on it. The trigger is good, and the action is smooth, but it's awkward to handle and the low grip + hammer-fired tier bore axis result in the muzzle bouncing more than any other striker-fired pistol I've fired.

tl;dr 5/10, kebabs need to make it feel less shitty and huge
