Been looking for this thread for a couple of days. Since I think I might have fucked up over the weekend. Saw a mark III ross for like 600 bucks. That I didn't buy because someone lopped off about 5 inches off the end. It was the first one I've ever seen in person. Did I make a mistake?

No, not really. They go for around $1200 unmolested but fixing it will be difficult in the extreme. Better to just pass it up.

Turkish Mausers are still under $300, they're some of the few milsurp guns that are that cheap.

>>33914486
As others have already said, Yugo or Turkish Mausers are your best bet for cheap, and they're 300+ most likely. Enfields are 400 if you find a good deal or if it's in rough condition, more likely 500 or 600.

If you want really cheap mausers, you can find some Spanish Mausers or random South American country mausers for 200-ish, but they also tend to be chambered in 7mm which is more than double the 8mm Mauser that most Euro Mausers like the Yugo and Turkish Mausers shoot.

Also, as much of a meme as it is, if you're considering something besides the Enfield or Mauser, Mosins tend to be cheap and they're pretty fun to shoot despite their flaws (and there's a lot of them). Best bet for Mosins for cheap are the 91/30s for sale that are unfortunately 250-300 now, but higher quality Finnish Mosins that are more accurate can be bought for 350-400.

Short answer is yes. Obviously shitty examples exist, but most are very suitable and some can be surprisingly accurate. All that I've encountered have been smooth as well, though recoil can be a tad stout in the carbines. Almost as bad as the M95.

Realistically though you're not gonna be putting thousands and thousands of rounds through them.

new to gats, and newer to milsurp. I'm thinking about buying an m1 garand I found at a pawn shop for 900 bucks. The serial is 514346 and is has a SA/NFR stamp on the stock. I'm not quite sure what else to look for when buying, the wood condition is probably a little below fair. It has seen better days and could use a refinishing. Should i buy /k/?

It is fine
>But you can't even see it
And I know it is fine.

As to whether to buy or not, it depends. It's a fair price these days. If you want a Garand you'll likely be hard pressed to find a better deal. But, at least to me, they're rather overrated rifles.
>>
>>33916599

>could use a refinishing

don't do it. you'll most likely devalue/damage that rifle and cost hundreds of dollars in the finish + lost value.
>>
>>33916623
>>33916661
Thanks for the heads up nigs, at any rate I wouldn't have done anything myself. Other than getting the date on the barrel, what else should I do before buying.

>overrated
Could be, I have no experience there. But I want to hear the pings
>>
>>33916599

That's a decent price for a Garand. The SA means Springfield Armory, not sure what NFR means. I'd probably buy it if I saw that and the bore looked halfway good.

Also, like the others said, don't refinish. Please.

I'd like to think it didn't, but with it being as popular as it was and all the YouTube videos comparing guns from the game with their real counterparts it definitely did something. It has an affect in the same way Demoranch and TFBTV have an effect. People see guns they had little to no interest in and suddenly want one.

Good old nugget and a cheap mauser. I recommend both an m91/30 and an m48 to fill both of those slots. If you want a cheap semi-auto in an easy to find caliber, go with a Yugo SKS
>>
>>33926446
But what you like as you learn, groom your collection, and it will read like a beautiful story
>>
>>33926446

what kind of milsurp guns are you into? early bolt actions? ww1 shit? ww2? 1950s-70s?

pick an era you like, pick a gun you find appealing and in your price range and start there. I would recommend starting with a bolt action since they have a simpler initial maintenance than a semi-auto.
>>
>>33926478
Leaning towards WWI. Im assuming that will cause the price to go up a little.
>>
>>33926505

It will make things harder to find since a lot of guns were destroyed or converted later (i.e. the M91/30 Mosins) but WW2 is probably more popular, so the prices probably won't be that much worse.
>>
My beautiful new Kar98k with most of the serial numbers matching. Dated 1941
>>
>>33926505

>Leaning towards WWI

depends on how tight your focus is on milsurp. if you want an original unmolested obendorf 1898 mauser then I hope your wallet is fuckhuge. some other examples of wallet raping ww1 shit: winchester 1895, very good condition m1903s if you live in burgertown.

if you want a smle mk 3 your wallet will be mostly spared. same with mosin-nagants, and M95s. There are a ton more cheap or reasonably priced milsurp.

I would recommend a SMLE mk 3 as their prices range in the 300-500 bucks and the ammunition is fairly easy to acquire. I personally roll with PPU for .303 british.
>>
>>33926539

true. for me if the price of an original make rifle is too much I will go for the nearest condition rifle using the same design and call it good until my wallet is huge enough.

but it's really up to how rigid the buyers focus is on the shit they want.
>>
>>33926580

Yep. There's a Garand at a nearby pawn shop for $1100, but it's not an M1. It's a commercial 7.62 NATO conversion with an 18" barrel. Plenty of guys would probably be happy with that, haggle down to $1k or maybe even lower, then they have a Garand. But I want an original spec one.

I think mine is either a bring-back or a war-bond rifle. The firing pin tip has been broken off —like a war-bond rifle— but the barrel is not plugged. Everything save the cleaning rod matches the receiver.

Lol, someone cut a hole in the buttplate to make it into a lamp. Not a bullet strike.

Is there a E or another letter on the nose?
It's definitely not worth anything close to 775 with a scrubbed receiver. Another thing to check is how many grooves it has in the rifling. The original m1917 had 5 grooves with a left hand twist. A number were rearsenaled in WW2 with more conventional 4 or 2 groove barrels with right hand twists
>>
>>33926469
I have both of those (I'm not the Anon who asked), but a 91/30 or an M48 are both good choices. They are both great shooters (at least mine are) and the ammo for the Mosin is still relatively easy to get (my local Walmart even has it on occasion). I'm just happy my dad got me my Mosin when they were still 99$ six or seven years ago

I'm not overly concerned with the resale value in that sense, cos to me it's still a 1917. I just asked about it here because I was paranoid it might somehow be demilled and the seller doesn't know. After a couple heartbreaks, I don't sell my guns anymore.

Not him, but I've noticed that each of their videos has gotten more obnoxious lately. Even last fall they had some decent deals, but since then they've charged Gander Mountain-tier prices on milsurp. I bought from them once last September, but haven't seen anything reasonable since then.

>>
>>33933491
don't, please don't

first, they are out of decent ones. Second, you never want to get anything below hand picked, excellent on classic. I got a very good Sako m39 off there and it is cracked to high fucking hell. So much that any sane person would retire it, but fuck it, I bought it, I'm gonna shoot it. Now I'm looking for a replacement stock and the gun has some pitting.

Don't trust that fat fuck.

>>33933491
Classic has its ups and downs. Mostly downs. My 92s was a fantastic buy. They had them for 289 or so and I got one with bluing wear but flawless internals. The k31 I got was fine metal wise and rated VG, they said there were no cracks or scratches outside the normal wear and they weren't coded for cracks. Mine had a very visible 2+in crack on the handguard that went all the way through. Still only paid 374 total for it though
