When you fall while wearing a kilt theres still going to be cloth between you and the transgressing surface. With shorts you have none while with pants and a kilt you atleast have something between you. Kilts also have the same amount of mobility as shorts if you go to climb something or running. Kilts also have massively more ventilation for your crotch and other hot areas than pants and are about on par with shorts. However then we take into consideration that kilts maintain that air flow while shielding the majority of your legs from the sun while shorts cannot do that. Then you add on that kilts can attach pockets for storage, a sporran for storage, and a thicker belt that can support from weight being hung from it if need be.

However, just to keep with the thread, after wearing them I do believe that there is some level of truth to using them in /k/ related activities. They do have pretty solid flow and keep me dry compared to pants. I dont like shorts all that much, mostly in terms of dealing with all that flesh being out there, but I love the cooling in the summer. I was as skeptical as many but after buying a simple Duck-material kilt and using it for shooting, outdoor work, and hiking, I felt they were a few notches above pants and equal with shorts for moving around and staying cool.
