it's easy to make a child think everyone is his fault. just look at divorces. a child may feel obliged to stay and fight even in terrible conditions when an adult would simply defect

Look up how child soldiers were used by Iran in the Iran-Iraq war.They pretty much sent them in bonsai charge waves until the enemy MG's ran out of ammo. And also made propaganda films about them

For africans it's probably the ease of control. Get them young, make them dependent on you, they're less likely to just desert.
For national armies (iranians, nazis, ussr, plenty of others actuallly): boys are additional manpower and they're cheap (because they don't have a prestigious job that pays taxes/produces war materials etc.) That's good enough a reason if you think them replaceable or you're desperate or both.

When you look at age of men in military service as a percent of average life expectancy, Africa is actually right on par with North America.
