Well if you look at the politics of it, a lot of the gun banning stuff was proposed and supported by boomers. Millenials parents were most likely boomers and not wanting them to be around guns. Put 2+2 together and there is a lot of incentive for them to not be exposed to guns, or have much of an interest in them aside from movies about how ridiculous they are being one shot kill machines in action movies for the hero who avoids machine gun fire while mowing down an army of bad guys.
