I got yelled at by a guy with CA plates for muzzle sweeping his truck with a mosin without a bolt in it, that was unloaded, when I slid it out of the case in my trunk.
Same guy berated me an hour later for shooting downward at stumps in a wide field instead of at a rock face backdrop right behind me. Told me that the rocks would stop bullets, but the stumps would not and they would fly through they woods and hit someone. (I was shooting down in elevation, into dirt. Off and away from the trail. 1 mile from parking lot.) When I tried to say the rocks would ricochet, he tried to take my picture and said he'd call the sheriff and so I let him know that he was #1. Not really sure what he would've told the sheriff, help there's a dick with a PU shooting on state land, murdering paper and stumps?

Corporal, also a qualified Range Safety Officer in the British Army. During live training, I'd be one of the RSO's who'd run down the range behind the live firers, making sure their arcs were clear, telling them to check fire, switch fire, etc.

The amount of chucklefuckery I've witnessed boggles the mind.

1. Everyone's down in ditches, putting fire onto the targets as the tower pops them up. Start to break left, so guys running down the line, dropping in at the rear, then the guy at the front does the same. One of the lads, Minty, starts his break.... and runs down the -front- of the entire fucking line of live firing.

To this day, I have no idea how he lived, other than me and the other RSO screaming 'check fire' loud enough to summon the Four Horsemen.

2. We're all in Bastion in Afghanistan, doing some dry training on LAWs. One of the LAWs is live. No-one notices. Promptly wreck a CRARRV in the REME compound next door.

3. Back in the UK, in barracks doing dry training on the Scimitar. The lad drops the dummy rounds into the MBSGD and goes through the firing sequence with the gunnery instructor. Promptly fires a live smoke grenade that got mixed in. Hits the hangar roof, sets fire to the small office where the rest of us were waiting, queue people jumping out windows and screaming with flashbacks as we only got back from Iraq two weeks prior.

4. In Dover at Lydd, training on the underslung grenade launcher - training rounds are paint rounds, still shells but splats bright orange paint. One of the lads talking, waving his UGL about, no-one's that fussed as he's in the waiting area and we're all holding unloaded UGL's. He fucks about and promptly smashes in the side of a wooden shed behind everyone, leaving it covered in orange paint....

5. Lydd, again, on the Jackal. Small, squat container downrange. Strict instructions given not to shoot at it. Someone hits it with the AGL and destroys it. It was an electrical substation.

Not really. Seems it was an early teen thing. Responsibility and carefulness were (and I suppose are) fairly central to my identity, compounded that I hated being a kid, particularly given how fudd-heavy the range was. I hated the way people looked at me and constantly felt like everyone was waiting for me to leave. In retrospect that shit was all confirmation bias, but it freaked me out back then, and as soon as I gave them anything to confirm what I assumed they thought of me, I made sure I never went back. It fucked with the foundation of what I believed myself to be and ruined the image I was trying to put forth.

I got a lot better towards mid high school and on. I kind of miss getting into guns with my dad, that shit was comfy, but I don't miss much else about my tween years.

In my experience it boiled down to realizing I could just not acknowledge it. I know that's easier said than done, and my brief experience with SSRIs at like 12 may have helped me figure it out, but in the end that was really the key. More you ignore it the less it bothers you at all. Then you start to make friends and shit and it gets even easier. I also got into writefaggotry around then, that helped a lot too.

OK. Maybe I've just been a lucky Pennsylvanian who's only gone to ultra-chill shooting ranges - to be fair no range I've ever been to even had a range officer. But clear leather? Really? I could see grabbing the gun to redirect it in a safe direction, and I could almost see tackling them if the RO's on the spectrum. But they're gonna literally shoot a member for what amounts to a dangerous, but innocent, breach of range etiquette?

.357 can chamber .38spc, but absoh-lutely not the other way round. Most modern .38s are purposely sized so that the longer .357 won't fit properly in them.

Similarly, .44mag can chamber .44 special, and .45lc can chamber .45acp.

5.56 is basically a slightly souped-up .223, but most modern .223's can handle the pressure anyway. Similarly, .308 and 7.62x51 are nearly identical, actually in this case it's the reverse in that the original imperial designation (.308) is a bit hotter. So yeah, those are interchangeable because they're very close to being the same round.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure I missed some.
