My older brother served in the army and I had been familiar with the uniform. Long story short, I noticed an overweight neckbeard walking around in a size-too-big uniform at the mall during a Veteran's Day sale.

I knew that veterans, no matter the branch, don't flaunt around in their uniforms. They usually just show their ID for whatever benefits or discounts they are receiving.

The only family-associated patch I have that I will never wear is the 101st Airborne patch my cousin gave me. His unit was seconded to them for a while and so everyone had to learn parachute jumps and wear their shit I guess. Too much weight and pride on that emblem, so it sits in my collection.

Looks shitty and lazy I guess. I had a Major talk to me because I was standing with my hands in my pockets at -35C. Told him my Major said it was ok because he'd rather have a case on his desk about guys having their hands in their pockets, than guys having frostbite. The issued gloves we got burned up first time out. So most of the guys just had their hands in the pocket.
