What kind of gun parts can you make and sell without an FFL? Is it pretty much just receivers you can't make, or what? I've been looking online and can't find a clear answer for this.

You can make anything that isn't legally considered a firearm, so any part you have to transfer through an FFL is out.
You can make anything up to and including a fully functioning gun as long as it's not full auto and/or you have no intention of selling it. Where the law gets tricky is with the word "intent", and Mr. AFT might try to buttfuck you saying that you intended to sell the gun even if you really didn't

Good reading comprehension, buddy.

Also can't fire from an open bolt.
What's the French Foreign Legion got to do with making firearms?

It's a wonder anyone in this country bothers manufacturing guns for sale, look at this damn 18 page monster application for an FFL. https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/form/form-7-application-federal-firearms-license-atf-form-531012/download

That's because firearms mfg and retail is a complicated subject.
Sure, you might not need an FFL to make and sell a scope mount, but because it's a weapon part (military technology) it could fall under ITAR, even if you never plan to export it. That's a $2250 tax/yr and registration.
Sorry OP, the only right answer is to talk to a lawyer.

Everyone knows lawyers are for fags. OP, the best thing to do is label your open bolt machine gun "for personal use only."
As long as you do that, you are fine; It's a little trick they don't want you to know about.

You can make anything, patent it, and retain full rights of such creation withstanding respect for others tangible rights. If you feel that someone might pen you for a violation to a law you wern't notice properly, feel free to go to your local puvlic courts and prepare an order, public notice, and hearing to assert an order for your rights. Please bone up your court procedure and order forms, you will be far more respected for due dilligence. Also having multiple concurring parties sign for an order help.
