just got pic related today
>colt new service (i think)
>fuddyfive acp
howd I do?
>>
What'd you pay? Do you know if it's a reblue? Ones in that condition usually are, fyi.

Also, do you have a plan for servicing it if it encounters problems? Colts have a deserved reputation for not having especially tough frames or lockwork...
>>
>>33891941
paid 450 and I'm pretty sure it is a reblue. I know some gunsmiths near me so if something goes wrong I'll probably just take it to one of them.
This was basically an impulse buy because I thought it looked cool and I am not a very smart man. I know basically nothing about these. What can you tell me about these anon?

$148 shooting it next week
>>

Honestly, anon, I have no idea from just looking at the picture you've posted. Can you get some shots of the rollmarks on its barrel or something?

I've never seen a New Service with a 3'' barrel (that's what it looks like just eyeballing it anyway) or a front sight like that. I assume those were modifications made by one of the previous owners, if it is indeed a New Service.

Yeah the barrel is what threw me off as well. previous owner said some owner before him may have had the barrel cut down. the sights look closer to a colt officer model.
barrel says "colt d.a. 45"

>>33892598
pic was supposed to be rightside up but phoneposting
>>
>>33891912
I fucking love those old grips C O L T
>>
>>33892598
That would be .45 Colt not ACP. Could be converted though but the old New Service barrel would be .454 not .451 so I wonder how it shoots if the cylinder is .45 ACP. Can you see a ridge in the chambers for ACP to head space on? Is there space between the back of the cylinder and the frame for moon clips?

pic related is the colt officer model special with sights like the ones on the revolver in question. according to the colt serial number database it could be an officers model special but I couldn't find out whether or not those were ever made in .45acp
>>
>>33892669
yeah it has the ridges for 45 acp. i'll post a pic in a minute
>>
>>33892669
Could be a shortened commercial M1917.

I see an inspector mark on the frame. I think it's a GI M1917 that's been customized and reblued. Can you see a hole where a lanyard ring went on the butt frame?

heres the space behind the cylinder. I tried it with a moon clip and a spent 45 acp casing and it did not fit

doesnt look like anything was ever there.
>>
>>33892598
That's a customized M1917. It is the same as a New Service but a model specifically made for the Army in WWI.
>>
>>33892728
Looks filled to me...
>>
>>33892712
You sure? Looks about right to me.
>>
>>33892761
yeah i'll take a pic
>>
The "Colt D.A. .45" roll mark is correct for M1917

here it is with a spent casing in a moonclip in the cylinder. the casing seems to get stuck on the slightly protruding circle part that the firing pin pokes through (dont know the name of it)
>>
>>33892804

Firing pin bushing.

i have no idea what either of these mean, but there is an "H" stamped above the frame serial number, and a "V" stamped below it. you can kinda see them in this pic
>>
>>33892804
That's a problem dude. The firing pin bushing is fucked.
>>
>>33892846
Inspector marks. Found all over a GI M1917.
>>
>>33892828
learn something new everyday lol.
is it supposed to stick out like that? because if so i dont think this thing is supposed to be used with moon clips. it cycles normally if the casing is just in the cyclinder without a moon clip
>>
>>33892848
oh shit. whats wrong with it?
>>
I have not owned a Colt before, but I do own two other revolvers, including one that accepts moon clips. >>33892848 is probably right; the firing pin bushing probably shouldn't be bulging like that.
>>
>>33892859
The later Colt M1917s (and all S&W M1917s) can be shot with ACP only (requires spent cases pushed out with a dowel), moon clips or .45 Auto Rim. You need a gunsmith to fix that bushing for maximum shooting pleasure.
>>
>>33892877
I'll take a pic of mine to show you.
>>
>>33892853
>>33892904
>>33892915
ah ok, glad i know whats wrong with it now. the dude i bought it off gave me hella moon clips with it so when they didnt work i figured it was just some weird frankengun and that was why.

also glad to find out it actually is a 1917, just wish the barrel hadnt been fucked with. according to colts serial number tracking thing its from 1919

>>
>>33893004
Make that into a Fitz Special. After you get the bushing fixed of course.
>>
>>33893034
>>33893051
its all good homie half of mine have been upside down lol.

yeah compared to yours mine is pretty fucked. its almost flush at the bottom but sticks out a little under 1/3 the width of a dime at the top
>>
>>33893079
idk about that, they dont really look like my cup of tea

i was thinking about getting the barrel replaced with a stock one (saw a dude do it on youtube so i suppose it can be done), but the 2.5 inch barrel has kinda grown on me. ive got malet hands so the thing's heavy and unweildy enough as it is lol.
>>
>>33893140
meant manlet instead of malet. theyre the opposite of mallets

Gunsmith dude. Can be fixed. Worth it. My New Service is my favorite revolver and I have few. I wouldn't shoot it until you get it fixed though. That bushing is an integral part of the recoil frame.
>>
>>33893140
I kind of like yours. Maybe not the front sight so much but I could live with it.
>>
>>33893164
thanks for the info man I appreciate it and will definitely get it fixed before using it. any idea what fixing it will cost?
>>
>>33893191
Quick google doesn't show the usual suspects having the part so a Smith might have to make one. After that it's pressed in. Really? No idea. I don't dry fire my guns so I never wore a bushing out.
>>
>>33893190
definitely agree on the sight. i think it kinda suits the whole short and stout look of the gun but its so tall on such a short barrel idk how functional it would be. i feel like im rick grimes-ing it when im aiming
>>
>>33893236
ah ok thanks though. is that how you think it got so fucked up, being dry fired over the years?
>>
>>33893264
Nah. Dry firing fucks up the little hole where the firing pin pokes through eventually forcing replacement because primers crater. Yours was either replaced poorly or upset with hot hand loads. Just my guess.
>>
>>33893297
interesting. do you know what kind of loads are safe to fire out of these guns? i wouldnt want to fix it then promptly fuck it up again

additionally, now that alls said and done, how bad/good of a price was 450 for this thing?
>>
>>33893370
First one is easy. Commercial .45 ACP only. It is a nearly 100 year old pistol after all. Not actually seeing the gun, I can't say I would pay that for it but I would definitely consider that gun at that price.
>>
>>33893370
$450 isn't bad if that was an out-the-door price including any relevant fees/taxes. Colts in general are extremely expensive, so $450 is basically the cheapest you are going to find unless you buy a gun that has been ruined/no longer works or rip off an old lady who has no idea of what she has.

got it off armslist so 450 was in fact the out-the-parking-lot price
good to know I didn't totally get screwed on price although though the firing pin bushing is jacked up.

thanks to all yall who helped me figure out what exactly this gun is and what is wrong with it. I'm gonna go to bed now, heres one more shitty phone pic for the road
