Do you use firearm specific solvents and lubricants or do you improvise?

I have a bottle of CLP in my range bag for a pinch, but normal care consists of:

- Zippo Lighter Fluid (works wonders as a solvent, great for getting into trigger mechanisms)

- Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Oil (put it in my car, put it on my guns, great low weight oil that spreads on thin, doesn't gunk up, and protects the finish when stored)

- WD-40 (NOT A LUBRICANT. If I'm out in the rain for any prolonged period of time, I'll spray down my gun with a quick coat as it's hydrophobic, but this always requires a prompt cleaning at home or else it can turn into a slime that traps debris)

What does the rest of /k/ use?

WD-40 Specialist is 10/10 for storage/rust/water protection, I just use CLP for everything else.
>>
I use ballistol for every single purpose. I'm far too lazy to give a fuck beyond that.
>>
>>33885479
I have a secret I'll tell y'all if someone gets dubs
>>
>>33885577
well fuck
it's ammonia free windex
>>
>>33885479
>>33885561
Don't fucking use WD-40 on your guns you assholes.

>>33885577
nice
>>
>>33885587
Why not? If it's only used as a hydrophobic spray and you aren't hosing down the inside of the action, what's the harm?
>>
>>33885587

Unless they get wet, then it's not a terrible idea.
>>
>>33885479

-wd-40 for rust removal or very hard screws, if worse use shit like kroil

-mineral spirits for cosmoline or old as fuck grease

-hoppes for barrels, Remington wipes and grease/oil for the bolt, receiver, lugs.

vm&p naphtha is essentially the same thing as zippo lighter fluid, except much cheaper
>>
>>33885587
People have used WD-40 on their guns for years retard, you don't know what you're talking about.

What do you guys use to clean your cleaning brushes and rods? I've always used denatured alcohol but wonder if there's anything better.
>>
>>33885479
I cleaned my rifle with vodka once, it works fairly good.
>>
>>33885479
I have a tub filled with cosmoline that I throw my sks into after firing it. Let it soak for a few hours.
But to be honest I keep finding this shit on my stripper clips and everything. WD-40 clears it out pretty good but by god it took forever.
>>
>>33885479
imo the only part that requires actual gun solvent/lubricant is the barrel (due to copper and lead fouling)

for the action / trigger group, wd-40 as a solvent and 10w30 as a lubricant
>>
>>33886026
I see your point, but for like a Garand/M14/Mini-14/M1 Carbine's op-rod? Fast moving metal on metal with no lubricant makes me cringe.
>>
>>33886026
Never mind, misread that as the action not requiring any lubricant at all
>>
>>33885574
same, ballistol on everything unless there's copper fouling, in which case I use hoppe's. fucking love ballistol, and the little film it leaves on the exteriors
>>
>>33886039
absolutely, i wasn't suggesting to not use lubricant on certain metal moving parts, i just forgot to mention op rods
>>
>>33886056
>>33885574

Ballistol and hoppe's are great, but if for whatever reason, (I try not to judge), you have a soft metal plated firearm, nickel, gold-leaf, etc, any of those metal dissolving solvents will eat right through it.
>>
>>33886114
Because they dissolve copper, and the base layer of almost any electroplated finish is copper.

Any copper solvent + nickel finish is no bueno
>>
>>33886194
Yep, the electroplating will start flaking off if it gets down to the base copper

No 3-in-1 love?
