a service weapon from dads time in the war, be it his 1911 or m1 garand/carbine and maybe a few trophies
my grandfather had a walther ppk and a p38 he smuggled back over from Europe he kept in his nightstand

Revolvers and 1911 style pistols, though German and Japanese war trophies can be used too. Largely WW2 surplus and maybe some western relics.

If it's either a poor or noguns family, maybe a Saturday night special (cheap .25 pistol that only holds four rounds comes to mind).

the only great uncle I have meet, is the only person I know to have had firearms in my family, other than me and my father. supposedly my father's father had a shotgun when he moved to the farm. though I never saw it.

my great uncle was in ww2. i saw his gun collection and I still have 2 of them. he had a colt revolver in .357mag, some bolt action sporting rifles, an underover shotgun, a ruger bearcat(which I have), and after both him and the great aunt died we found a carcano short rifle coverted to fire 8mm mauser by the SS for the Volksstrum in the attic(which I also have still).

G.I. bringbacks were encouraged since Europe was awash in weapons. No smuggling required. Unfortunately my father didn't bring back anything but various other WWII vets in our comfy North Jersey town had singles or collections. Lotta Mausers, P38s, Lugers, gravity knives etc.

rare if i were to venture a guess. handguns, knives, and trinkets were mainly what people sent back or came back with. automatic weapons would be handled more so with confiscation from the surrendering army. i haven't heard any stories of people sneaking an mp40 or something back stateside from ww2.

My grand-dad and I were talking about this literally last week. According to him, mostly they had hunting shotgun loaded with buckshot if they had anything specifically put aside for home defense. Easily available and popular for sport. Others just figured they'd grab whatever was at hand.

He also told me he kept a P38 his elder brother bought back in his nightstand. Damn I wish that gun was still in the family.
