I'm an /out/ fag and I'm planning a 230 mile backpacking trip through interior Alaska. I'm going to be in bear country and I'm not going into the shit with a can of mace. I'm looking to bring a weapon specifically for bear defense to keep at hand at all times. I'd also like to bring a lightweight survival rifle to strap to my pack in case of emergency, something to take small game and birds. Does /k/ have any recommendations?

I'm thinking a Smith & Wesson Model 629 at hand and a 10/22 on the pack. Thoughts?
>>
>>33878306
>Smith & Wesson Model 629
yes

>10/22 on the pack
yes

you could just bring a rifle that would handle both though. brush gun maybe?
230 miles is a long way. be light as possible.

For bears even hot loads of .357 mag aren't really enough, .44, .454 are maybe enough if well placed, .500S&W may be feasible, but for a newer shooter you're fucked if you can't handle these cartridges.

I'd take a much larger rifle and lose the handgun altogether, 7mm rem mag, .450 marlin, .375H&H, .30-06 or a rifled shotgun with 2 3/4" slugs, while keeping your backup .22
>>
>>33878306
You likely won't need a weapon. Bears fear humans. Only chance is you sneak up on a mama bear protecting her Cubs.

Just be a fucking man and carry a 12 guage. A 12 guage slug will end anything.

Bears are secondary to moose in the threat matrix. I don't know why God put so much hate into an herbivore so large but those things will fuck you up for almost no reason if you catch them the wrong day.

Bear spray and a bell will do you well if you don't feel like lugging around a shotgun.

Not op, but I wonder if the non-nfa offerings from Mossberg or Remington will begin to see use as pack guns in bear country? Sure they're hard to shoot, but that's what training and practice are for. Mine is not awful with buckshot, haven't run any slugs through it yet. But I don't live in griz country, so there's that. Thoughts?
>>
I would still carry bear spray along with a firearm. There have been multiple studies proving that spray is more effective at stopping a bear attack.

Anemic 357?
>>
>>33878356

I've definitely considered bringing just one to do both. It's much easier to carry a revolver on a chest strap than a rifle on a sling. My other concern is that any gun that would protect me sufficiently against bears would obliterate and birds or small game I may need to take in a survival situation. Realistically if something goes wrong I won't be killing moose or other large game to survive. I'm looking for stopping power and reliability in one and weight primarily in the other.

and a 45-70 lever gun
>>
>>33878414

I'm not looking for good enough I'm looking for more than enough, but lightweight enough to lug along and not feel like a fuck when I don't use it once.
>>
Consider a Glock in 10mm

Lightweight and gives you the opportunity to fire many shots rapidly that do good damage.

Honestly though, I'd skip the pistol altogether and bring a 45-70 guide gun with some dedicated hard cast bear loads from Garrets or Buffalo Bore
>>
>>33878450

Do bear mace slugs exist? I feel like that could be pretty effective.
>>

>>
>>33878502

I have been looking at 45-70 like pic related my only concern is keeping it conveniently at hand. I don't want it hanging off a sling and banging around when I'm scrambling on all fours. The convenience of the 629 is what draws me to it.
>>
Shotgun will put out bear stopping slugs and can still take birds or squirrels or rabbits in a survival situation. Something like the KSG or UTS-12 is super compact. The KSG weighs less (empty) than the S&W X-frame.

Things like that are retarded. That's about a 1 inch barrel. It's pretty much just a fireball-maker. 45-70 is made for bare minimum of like 20 inch barrels and even then not all powder is burned.

I'd bet a 45 LC with a 3-4 inch barrel would have more energy per shot and be about the same size.
>>
Also, do take the mace. It may be more effective in a lot of situations.

45-70 lever gun. Also, just be a noisy fuck while you're hiking and the burrs will stay the fuck away from you, they prefer to avoid people. Have a plan for homicidal moose tho, those fuckers are towering piles of autistic fury who will not hesitate to stomp your shit if you look at them wrong. Also, bring a fuckload of DEET and bug netting with you, interior Alaska is basically a giant fucking bog and the mosquitoes will blot out the sun during the summer months.

These threads always end up with the same 4 fags trying to out-beargun one another with progressively larger and larger cartridges.

Pic related: The inevitable, stupid end of every beargun thread. Don't go within ten thousand miles of bear country without at least 5 of these.
>>
>>33878633
so you're going to carry 40 days worth of food??
>>
>>33878306
do bring bear mace, but also bring a slug gun, rifle caliber carbine, or a magnum revolver of at least 44. a shotgun or lever 45-70 are usually considered ideal.

http://www.chuckhawks.com/grizzly_cartridges.htm

don't bother with the 10/22, it is woefully inadequate for anything but poaching up there. if you're hiking the parks it isn't usually legal to take game at whim and having a 10/22 they will assume that is exactly what you are up to so be warned about that. Alaskan DFG and park rangers take poaching very seriously.
>>
>>33878663

I have three restock points along the way, the most I'll be carrying is fifteen days worth with five days extra.

>>
>>33878633

keep in mind that you're probably not gonna get a lot of dramatic scenery like what you just posted in the Interior. It's mostly endless miles of flat, dense taiga and bogs.
>>
>>33878724
>fifteen days worth with five days extra.
i'd not worry about survival hunting in that kind of situation then. at any rate though. i'd still take the 45-70 lever gun. bring a box of 410 birdshot to make yourself feel better.

>>
>>33878683
>>33878738

The 10/22 would ideally never come out of my pack. It's solely for emergencies, if I'm in a survival situation I'll be using it for birds and small game and only in a situation where it's my life or theirs. I'd rather subsist on berries and fish than shoot anything. I'm considering bringing a shotgun with slugs and birdshot but a handful of .44 and a box of .22 packs way lighter.

I like my henry's AR7 for a backpack rifle but assembly in a pinch is tough as it's a three piece rifle and it's a little picky on ammo. It has a hard time cycling subsonic not that it sounds like subsonic is necessary for you

The loadout you proposed is good. At the same time, you should also give some consideration to the people who are recommending that you get a .45-70 lever gun. IIRC, .45-70 has been used to take down every single terrestrial animal, including the African Big Five. Even an Alaska Grizzly or Polar Bear is nothing by comparison.

it's not a question of the bear wearing armor the same way it isn't a question of armor when you're trying to stop a knife wielding jamal.
22lr kills men dead but there are valid reasons for recommending something meaner. it doesn't really do you any good to him 5 minutes after you've already bled out.

get some permethrin clothing spray.
test treat one garment and wear it some to make sure it doesn't irritate your skin, then treat EVERTHING you will be bringing.
>>
Just for "get this bear away from me" or killing an aggressive bear?

Well if price wasn't an object, I'd get something like a POF revolution, 7lb .308 rifle. I love my AR10 and would bring it innawoods if it wasn't heavy.

Realistically, I'd get a short barreled AK since you won't be maintaining it much on the trail, or a 10mm/.45 handgun.

Bear spray is really fucking good for deterring bears you might come upon, sure... But sometimes bears just want to fucking eat you. Spray won't do shit if one is on top of you and mauling you.

For handguns, a Glock 20 is a pretty good choice. Just make sure to get heavy, hot ammo. Not the pussy loads that a lot of companies push.

Any revolver in .44 is going to suffice. You're probably going to be under a lot of stress if a bear is close, and making multiple hits with a .500 is going to be a wonderful feat if you can pull it off... But not likely. Plus you have to lug the thing all day, and .500s are heavy as fuck, but most wheelguns in .44 are manageable.

Also look into getting a chest holster if you're going to carry a handgun. They're better than carrying on the hip if you have a pack.

For long guns, a .45-70 lever action has style, and ballistically a better 12gauge slug, but they're a bit expensive, more complicated internally, and I find most of them awkward to shoot in comparison to a shotgun. Sure you can practice, and if you're familiar with leverguns it's a good choice, but if you're not, you probably won't be shooting a ton of .45-70 because it's expensive.

Shotguns loaded with BRENNEKE slugs are the most economical and practical heavy hitters. You can practice with birdshot, and even hunt small game with it if you want to. Avoid pistol grip only shotguns, and get the shorter barrel tactical models.

Another option is an AR chambered in .50 Beowulf or .458 SOCOM. Very similar ballistics to .45-70, but with the semi automatic advantages, detachable mags, etc, and still as light. Not sure on the types of ammo available though, because it's not the traditional bear gun.

Of course you can also go with a rifle in .308 or up. A SCAR 17 or AR10 would be a nice fuck off gun for bears.

And a tip on ammo. AVOID ammo that is meant to expand. You want as much penetration as you can to either penetrate their thick skulls or do internal damage to organs.
>>
>>33880073
>get the shorter barrel tactical models.

So my Mossy 500 Persuader wiht an 18" barrel and Brenneke blammers would work fine?
>>
>>33880102
Barrel length doesn't really effect muzzle velocity as much on a shotguns, so 18 inch is fine, and Brenneke slugs are the preferred ammo type for bears. Hollow point rifled deer slugs for instance just break up very quickly on impact. There's a chance it wouldn't break through a grizzly's skull, or even do enough damage to internals if it hits the chest.

18 inch tactical models are usually what gets issued to wildlife officers in North America. So yeah it would be a good choice.
