If I am looking to get a cutlass or hanger, post civil war so preferably 1880s or newer production, should I get an antique or a reproduction if I want it to be usable?

Hangers weren't really a thing post Civil War

eh I guess a cutlass only then. I was looking more for a cutlass anyway but Included hangers cause they are similar short sabers.

Check out the "Sword Buyer's Guide" forums, the Renaissance and Military Swords section will have the info you need. If you want to use an antique, just don't cut anything too hard with it. For repros/modern copies, do a bit of research first. In general, modern repro swords of that era that are not wall-hangers will be strong enough, but not as well-balanced as the originals.

Get a decently made replica if you wish to use it
Antiques shouldn't really be dinged up imo.

Given how cheap you can find antique sabers, go for the antique
