>Hiroo Onoda - hide and seek world champion.

Onoda was a Japanese intelligence officer who served in WWII. He did not surrender until 1974 when he was personally issued orders from his former commanding officer, who was flown out to the Phillipines to officially relieve him of military service. He was pardoned by the Phillipines government despite murdering many police officers and military personnel during his 30+ years of service hiding in the mountains and jungles. Even though he was air dropped leaflets informing him of the Japanese surrender, as well as photograps and letters from his family, he concluded that they were "trickery" to draw him into the open. After being formally discharged by his commanding officer he turned himself over to the Phillipines military. He was taken into custody with his Arisaka rifle and bayonet in perfect working condition, more than 500 rounds of ammunition, 4 hand grenades, an anti personnel mine, maps of the area he stole from a police car, a pistol he looted from a slain policeman, and a can of kerosene he used to set fire to Philippine food storages over the years. He also set boobytraps along trails, which he assisted the Phillipines police force in finding and disposing of. He returned to Japan after a brief detention as a hero, and lobbied for a return to Japanese nationalism until his death in 2014.

>Vasili Blokhin was a Soviet Major-General who served as the chief executioner of the Stalinist NKVD under the administrations of Yagoda, Yezhov and Beria (after their respective falls from power, Yagoda and Yezhov were both ironically executed by Blokhin himself)

>He is recorded as having executed at least 40,000 prisoners personally, by his own hand, including his killing of over 7,000 Polish prisoners of war in a single incident, only pausing to eat and sleep, during the Katyn massacre in spring 1940

>Blokhin initially decided on a minimum quota of at least 300 executions per night, but sometimes exceeding 700; and engineered an efficient system in which the prisoners were individually led to a small room. Blokhin would stand waiting behind the door in his executioner garb: a leather butcher's apron, leather hat, and shoulder-length leather gloves. Then, without a hearing, the reading of a sentence or any other formalities, each prisoner was brought in and restrained by guards while Blokhin shot them once in the base of the skull with a German Walther Model 2 .25 ACP pistol. He had brought an entire briefcase full of his own Walther pistols, since he did not trust the reliability of the Soviet TT-30 for the frequent, heavy use he intended.

>Each night, 25 trenches, measuring eight to ten meters long, were dug to hold the night's corpses, and each trench was covered up before dawn

>Blokhin was forcibly retired in 1953 following Stalin's death that March. After Beria's fall from power in June of the same year, Blokhin's rank was stripped from him. He reportedly sank into alcoholism, went insane, and shot himself in the mouth with his ceremonial service revolver. (Hand nugget)

>Kurt Schwarm knocked out three Soviet tanks by himself with the Panzerfausts during one messenger ride with his motorcycle, hence the three Panzervernichtungsabzeichen on his right uniform sleeve. Note the Panzerfaust lying the sidecar of the motorcycle in the photograph. Schwarm is also wearing a Nahkampfspange. Being gratulated by comrades on his Ritterkreuz, this only shows that there were hardly any position at all that was "safer" than others. The Meldegänger must have risked their lives countless of times at the frontlines and just behind them delivering their messages.

The absolute madman

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Stirling

>6'6
>founded the SAS

Believing that taking his idea (The SAS) up through the chain of command was unlikely to work, Stirling decided to go straight to the top. On crutches following a parachuting accident, he stealthily entered Middle East headquarters in Cairo (under, through or over a fence) in an effort to see Commander-in-Chief General Claude Auchinleck.
Spotted by guards he ran on crutches into one office, only to come face-to-face with an officer he had previously fallen out with. Retreating rapidly to shouts of "Guards, Guards", he dodged on crutches into another office and came face to face with Deputy Commander Middle East General Ritchie. Stirling explained his plan to Ritchie, the latter immediately convincing Auchinleck (in the office next door) to allow Stirling to form a new Special Forces unit.

Finding it difficult to lead from the rear, Stirling often led from the front, his SAS units driving through enemy airfields to shoot up aircraft and crew, replacing the early operational strategy of attaching bombs to enemy aircraft on foot.

His biggest success was on the night of 26–27 July 1942 when his SAS squadron with 18 jeeps raided the Sidi Haneish landing strip and destroyed over 20 German aircraft for the loss of one man killed.

I knew him socially for a time, though we were of a different generation and background we had some common friends. He was popular in the members clubs around Mayfair and never had a bad word to say about anyone. That said, he kept odd company and I did not like most of his friends, especially Tiny Rowland. I hate to name drop, really, but I knew him in Africa and I despised the man.

He, Stirling, certainly would not stand for the state of the Special Forces club as it is today. Tiny Rowland would love it, because they'd finally let him in.

Thomas Baker, my dude.

>Sgt. Baker voluntarily took up a position in the rear to protect the company against surprise attack and came upon 2 heavily fortified enemy pockets manned by 2 officers and 10 enlisted men which had been bypassed. Without regard for such superior numbers, he unhesitatingly attacked and killed all of them. Five hundred yards farther, he discovered 6 men of the enemy who had concealed themselves behind our lines and destroyed all of them. On 7 July 1944, the perimeter of which Sgt. Baker was a part was attacked from 3 sides by from 3,000 to 5,000 Japanese. During the early stages of this attack, Sgt. Baker was seriously wounded but he insisted on remaining in the line and fired at the enemy at ranges sometimes as close as 5 yards until his ammunition ran out. Without ammunition and with his own weapon battered to uselessness from hand-to-hand combat, he was carried about 50 yards to the rear by a comrade, who was then himself wounded. At this point Sgt. Baker refused to be moved any farther stating that he preferred to be left to die rather than risk the lives of any more of his friends. A short time later, at his request, he was placed in a sitting position against a small tree. Another comrade, withdrawing, offered assistance. Sgt. Baker refused, insisting that he be left alone and be given a soldier's pistol with its remaining 8 rounds of ammunition. When last seen alive, Sgt. Baker was propped against a tree, pistol in hand, calmly facing the foe. Later Sgt. Baker's body was found in the same position, gun empty, with 8 Japanese lying dead before him.

>No Sgt. Stubby
>Stubby served with the 102nd Infantry Regiment in the trenches in France for 18 months and participated in four offensives and 17 battles. He entered combat on February 5, 1918 at Chemin des Dames, north of Soissons, and was under constant fire, day and night for over a month. In April 1918, during a raid to take Schieprey, Stubby was wounded in the foreleg by the retreating Germans throwing hand grenades. He was sent to the rear for convalescence, and as he had done on the front was able to improve morale. When he recovered from his wounds, Stubby returned to the trenches. He ultimately had two wound stripes.
In his first year of battle Stubby was injured by mustard gas. After he recovered, he returned with a specially designed gas mask to protect him. Also, he learned to warn his unit of poison gas attacks, located wounded soldiers in no man's land, and — since he could hear the whine of incoming artillery shells before humans could — became very adept at letting his unit know when to duck for cover. He was solely responsible for capturing a German spy in the Argonne. Due to his capture of the enemy spy, the commander of the 102 Infantry nominated Stubby for the rank of sergeant. However, whether Stubby was actually promoted or even an official member of the Army has been disputed. Following the retaking of Château-Thierry by the US, the women of the town made Stubby a chamois coat on which were pinned his many medals. He also helped free a French town from the Germans. He was later injured in the chest and leg by a grenade. At the end of the war, Robert Conroy smuggled Stubby home.

Not exactly OPERATING but deserves a mention.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Pujol_Garc%C3%ADa

>Be average Juan living in spain
>Don't like the nazis
>Start pranking them with fake intel about england
>They believe you
>Your obvious bullshit gets intercepted by the brits
>Even perfidious little albion is impressed by the level of your ruse cruise
>Get picked up by MI5 to become a le ebin trole for the UK
>Make up bullshit spy network of 25 people and get Germany to pay them (you)
>Despite nothing you say being true, Germany trusts you enough to never double check what you say
>Get codes for enigma because you're such a great spy
>Convince Germany that D-Day is going to be somewhere else
>By the time it's too late to move everything, tell Germany where it's actually going to happen
>Germany disagrees
I know I'm forgetting half the antics this guy pulled, but the final score was something like this:
Spanish Rusemaster:
>~$4million in today's money from Germany paying your network of spies
>Germany led on a series of multi year wild goose chases
>Respect of the UK
>Codes for the Enigma machine
>History remembers him as the greatest troll who ever lived

Nazis:
>Obviously fake intelligence
>Wasted effort and money
>Dignity

Not that guy, but tens of thousands at least. Some were imported to the U.S. during Operation Paperclip and developed all kinds of weapons and technologies (mostly aerospace and space) to fight the Soviets. After WWII, the Allied nations left troops in Europe and infiltrated some into the Soviet Union, and these included former Wehrmacht soldiers. Look up Operation Gladio. Also, a lot of Nazis escaped to South America and ended up doing all kinds of wild shit with the CIA and various dictatorships throughout the Cold War.

Wikipedia says he felt so bad about how degenerate japan had become in his eyes, he left the country for Brazil to raise cattle, only to return to help the japanese youth after hearing about a murder committed by a young person in the 80s.

Basically, he felt terrible that the japanese had lost their traditional sense of virtue.

He told them one of his agents died and his family needed reparations, and the Nazi's actually did it
