ITT: Everything about boots.
>Inb4 not weapons related edition.
I'm looking for a pair of Vietnam jungle boots for general hiking and goofing off. Local surplus only has them in wide so trying to find them online. The only good pair I could find were Altama for $100, is this the best out there or are there others?
>>
>>33868717
They're not the absolute worst pair of boots I've ever owned, but godDAYUM they get uncomfortable fast. Good for hikes if you don't mind your feet hurting. Good for anything, really, if you don't mind your feet hurting. They're tough as nails, though.

If you're gonna just goof off or want a disposable pair of hiking boots, grab the Rothco stuff. It's so much cheaper than actual surplus, plus it's not a total fucking bitch to find your size.
>>
>>33869168
Thanks, I think I'll check out the rothco stuff
>>
>>33869168
if you think jungles hurt, you've never had to wear dms boots
>>
I acquired a pair of Vietnam issue jungle boots in the 1960s from an American on R&R in Hong Kong. They were okay, then, but they were not durable and I got through them very quickly. I liked them for the work I had to do, and compared to the British boot they were better for jungle usage, but aside from that they were not good. I certainly would not buy a pair now, especially for $100.

Civilian hiking equipment has come on massively since then and outdoes military issue equipment in virtually every instance. There is absolutely no reason to buy these, whatsoever, unless you're into punishing your feet. Purchase civilian equipment, it is better, lighter, more resistant and will not ruin your day.

Decades of experience has taught me one thing above all; most military equipment is crap.
>>
>>33869781
Maybe true, bit I'd avoid anything rothco, though. Their boots have a legacy of falling apart, I often hear.

With $100 I'd just save or look at a discount store. You really aren't far off a good pair of boots with that kind of money.

Mountaineering and hiking equipment has come on massively in the past 20 years, but it's lightyears ahead of what it was in the 1960s and 70s.

/k/ where can I get high, slim leather jackboots that fit like the ones in picrelated? I don't like baggy jackboots.
do all jackboots squeak? I hate squeaky boots
>>
>>33870026
Have them made for you. Jackboots need to fit perfectly anyway. (Teproduction jackboots might be more baggy than originals because of the lower leg width of the average reenactor, but that's conjecture...)

Take a look at Nike jungle boots, I've had a pair for a while and they're pretty good.
>>
>>33870319
Fuck no. Those Nike boots are trash, they fell apart within 6 months of me wearing them
>>
>>33870355
Yeah, I guess I just haven't used them heavily enough yet. Either that or inconsistent manufacture which is even worse actually.
>>

I don't know if my feet are weird but jungles are super comfy to me. Personally I would pay the extra money and avoid rothco tho.

Repro US roughout ankle boots. From SM Wholesale. Yes, they're a bit spendy, buy all good boots are, and these are actually pretty damn nice quality. Thick leather, sole is attached right, and the eyelets don't feel loose. Only thing is very slightly uneven stitching, which you'd have to literally be a stitch nazi to care about.

They work great as dressy casual boots too, if you keep them in good condition.
>>
I need good 6" boots for hiking and standing for hours in. Catch is I have wide feet. I was looking at merrel, lowa, and salomon. What do?

Jungle boots are DMS.

Considering that I've worn both for about a years and a half each, the full leather boots are much more comfortable. Your feet aren't banging on a steel plate all day. The only positive of a jungle boot is that it airs out/drains easier.

>>33868717
I reccomend Corcoran Jump Boots. They don't have much grip, but they're much better constructed and look "nicer".

Anyone have experience with boots or similar ones? they look like memes but that price is pretty good.

I normally wear dress shoes at my job, but since I'm on my feet for the whole day, they get painful as fuck. I recently switched to my old magnum boots and they're much better.

Do you guys usually switch out the sole of your boots with a insert of some sort?

I got these firefighter boots made by SouthWest. They are great for welding and since they are not shit quality surplus or fake surplus since they are actually used.
>>
I been putting off buying boots since I'm suppose to be issued danner flashpoints. I've been waiting for a while now though.
>>
so, those SM Wholesale boots look cool, but, has anyone considered the Red Wing Iron Rangers? They're the ones that are recommended the most for my job.
>>
>>33872996
They look similiar but fuck those are expensive. Eyeing the sm wholesale ones more

The Red Wing Iron Rangers have a dorky looking toe box. And yes, the SM boots are repairable.
>>33873088
>Hipster meme shit
Because they're old fashioned? That's stupid fucking reasoning.
>>
>>33873255
they do have a dorky looking toe-box, but, the rough leather seems like it would have a lot issues with keeping out the elements/mud/ect and would wear faster.
>>
>>33873255
No, because they're objectively worse than boots made with modern technology.
>>
>>33869781

Altama is releasing Jungle Boots 2.0 later this year.

Other than that, you're better off buying quality boots from Lowa, La Sportiva, Meindl, etc.
>>
>>33871870
I got that same pair, though not shiny like those, from another website. It's not all leather, and the parts that are leather will will get roughed up real fast, especially around the buckles. I'd suggest you buy something else.
>>
Jungle boots suck. I bought a pair for I hiking in the Himalayas during monsoon season and they were flimsy and uncomfortable.

Milsurp clothing is generally shitty, I don't understand why /k/ has a fetish for it. Go to your local outdoors store and try on some proper footwear. Merrell, Keen, Scarpa, Ahnu, La Sportiva, Asolo, Lowa, Oboz, Salomon, Treksta, Vasque, Mammut, Salewa, Aku... These companies all make solid boots.

Are you sure you didn't buy rotchos? Also field jackets like M65 or M43 are great for outdoors, same for fleck parkas. Usually jungle boots are good for softer ground, however i'd recommend you merrell MOABS, they are comfy as fug
>>
>>33873299
The rough leather was made specifically to be more durable. You're supposed to wax them heavily to keep the water out.
>>33873392
Things modern boots have over these:
-Lining that wears out, can't be changed (unlike socks) and is not really necessary if your boots fit and are broken in
-Cushioning that sure is nice, but inevitably breaks down at some point
It's perfectly possible to combine a welted sole with replaceable cushioning, but few manufacturers do it.
>>
>>33875655
>Milsurp clothing is generally shitty, I don't understand why /k/ has a fetish for it.
Smart people buy milsurp because they can get gear for ten cents on the dollar. But then the 89IQ cargo-cultists come along, and make what was practical, fashionable.

I wore my issued jungle boots for years until the leather finally failed. Then I got issued a new pair and wore those until they died too. They crapped out a little quicker because I got out and started working in hydraulic repair. Lots of oil and solvents.

I got a pair of timberland pros last fall that are holding up pretty well, but I do wish I had gotten the 8in instead of the 6in because my knife won't stay in there when I walk around.

Pic related, not a big knife for the record

Also worth noting that I had to order wide ones and they still weren't quite wide enough. They separated a little at the toe box on my bigger foot and lost water tightness there, but I jammed some gorilla glue in there and they don't leak anymore. Still looks kinda garbage though, might take them to a cobbler this summer

I ordered a piar of boots from soviet power. The guy email me in the most broken english Ive ever dealt with and said he didn't have my size even though it was listed as in stock. Said he would send me a size bigger. I emailed him back and said I'd prefer a refund and he never go back to me. So 150 dollars later I have no boots and a new hatred of dealing with russkies.

Because milsurp gear is often cheap, durable, and practical, also comes in spiffy earth tones and camo so you don't stick out inna woods. Worst thing about the stuff is that it's heavy and usually has a generous fit so you won't be so /fa/.

Milsurp is shit, please, I beg you to understand this for your own good.

My main grievance with milsurp is that it is heavy and made of substandard materials. Cotton jackets, seriously? Cotton takes loses all its insulation quality when wet, and takes forever to dry. It has no benefit over wool or a synthetic material besides being comfortable when it is dry.

Don't get me wrong, if you are poor and can only afford milsurp, fine. I am not going to make you feel bad for being poor. In fact, one of the best outdoorsmen I know grew up poor and wearing milsurp. But to fetishize it and think it has any advantage over quality gear besides cost is to be mistaken.
>>
>>33879410
They are heavy(steel toe), but for what they are used for, they work.

>>
>>33868717
had to find boots at short notice to get into the mountains

ended up with a pair of knock-off chinese surplus boots

fucking tore my feet apart, after days hiking through a foot of snow I had mild frostbite and was bleeding profusely because chang left large thread stitches unbound on the sole

that being said, the shit I went through I was lucky I could find some boots which actually survived, because my options were limited
