2 rifles showed up on armslist, seem oddly cheap. Do these seem legit?

Enfield No. 4 Mk 1 Rifle, 303 British with 4 boxes of ppu for $300

1943 Turkish mauser, $225
>>
>>
The turk also comes with 3 boxes of ppu and 1 box of slavic looking 8mm
>>
>>
>>

Low price for the Enfield but looks alright from the pictures. I'd get it.

Would this shit harm my M96 if I shot it? Assuming I cleaned it after every range trip.
Usually I ignore blanks, but there are 4800 of the damn things for $100.
Also, does the wood bullet actually impact the target, or does it somehow deteriorate?
>>
>>33849076

Pretty sure they sorta disintegrate into a cloud of splinters or something.

Assuming the Enfield isn't rusted to shit in the interiors or something, you got a potentially really good deal with that. Only thing that seems off to me is the hollow looking piece on the bolt.

Same for the mauser. Could just be a gun owner that bought them awhile ago and doesn't know their value completely.

Buy the Enfield, that's a good price with the ammo, and ammo prices are actually going down because Wolf started producing .303 for some strange reason.

Don't buy the Turkish mauser, ammo is only going up in price and those Turkish mausers have been the same price for over a decade for a good reason: they suck

>>33849915
Spanish mausers however are pretty damned nice shooters, and in a few ways remind me of the Yugo mausers that a lot of people seem to love. Very nice rifles, but of course you'll be eating the rising cost of 8mm.

I know there's no such thing as a 7.5mm bore snake, but what would be the closest I could get? I don't think exact size matters that much in a bore snake, so as long as it's pretty close, I think it would do the trick just fine.

What's a decent priced milsurp scoped rifle I could get? I'm not too crazy about PU 91/30s (and they're faked a lot), but it seems like the only other options that aren't obscenely priced are a ZF41 repro on a K98 and those 1903A4 clones. I'd love a ZfK55, but I don't have that kind of money.

How do you define decently priced? CMP still sells M1C and D rifles, though they don't have scopes or mounts, you'd need to buy those separately.

The Ottoman Empire purchased 4 major smokeless Mauser models, (1890, 1893, 1903, 1908), which were all made at Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf or Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken Berlin. The only other country Turkey has purchased Mausers or Mauser parts from is Czechoslovakia.

They are generally in rough shape and have an oversized lower sling swivel loop for using the A-H M.95 sling.

In Austrian service it was the Model 1914 rifle; 3000 Chilean, 3000 Colombian, and 67,000 Mexican-contract rifles at WF-Steyr were sequestered by the A-H government.

I love my Garand, but I'm not sure I want a scoped version, especially as they're not supposed to be that accurate (I think that was related to the flash hider) and I'd have to get a repro scope and mount separately. Also, I'd like to be able to reload, and M1s are a pain in the ass for brass retention. This is why I'm kind of leaning towards the 1903A4 clone - I can share ammo with the M1, and I don't need to worry as much about damaging an original rifle (and they come with the M82 repros). Thanks for the suggestion, though. I'd forgotten about the CMP's M1Cs and M1Ds.

Last MkIII went for like 1300~ but it was from the grey blanket and shot up pretty fast in the last 2 hours. Id pay around 1100 for a MKIII, maybe 800 or so for a MKII. Im sure someone else can give you more accurate pricing than i

I should add that after the war ended most of the M.14 Mausers wound up in the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Jugoslavia), with a few in Czechoslovakia as well (these were probably later sold to Yugoslavia). When Yugoslavia adopted the FN M1924 short rifle in 8x57mm in 1928 they began a process to convert all their older long M98 Mausers (including the M.14 rifles) to the same caliber and length. These were called M24b in Yugo service.

like I said, gun buyback
me and my dad went to scalp some funs, came late, saw a guy buying a beat to shit enfield with scope rings and some other guys holding signs, some guy in a big truck whips around and pulls up and everyone flocks to him

dude had an entire bed full of ammo cans and boxes, everyone's looking around, so my dad offers $300 for everything, and the dude says yes

so we spent 30 minutes unloading most of the ammo cans since he wouldn't let us take them, and we ended up driving home real slow-like because of the weight

got some flaming bomb cans, bunch of mix-matched vintage ammo, some probably ~70s-era luger mags with no discernable markings, other miscellaneous mags, some old boxes of 1942-era gnazi 9mm, a handful of unidentifiable .30-06 with lead tips, and a bunch of .30 carbine blanks

All rifles made after sometime in 1948 were "counterbored" so they could be turned into LG48 grenade launchers if they wanted them to be. It's also easier to make one type of barrel than two. All rebarreled guns would have that barrel too.

Several ways. Most obvious is all original PUs have a scope number on their receiver or barrel shank. It might be crossed off, but it will be there. Second, legit PU scopes have domed turret screws, reproduction ones have flat screws. Those are the two easiest ways.

>>
>>33862413
my first milsurp that I fell in love with was the lee enfield n4 mk2.

but there are tons of fun milsurp out there. K31s, m1903s, k98s, arisakas.

It all depends on what you want and are willing to put up with. for instance I might recommend an Arisaka if you don't mind ammunition cost because bolt disassembly and cleaning are piss easy. while if you care about ammunition an SKS or mosin-nagant would be more your alley.
>>
>>33862413

The best one is the rifle that fits your historical desires and or Philosophy of Use the best.

Do you like British stuff? Then get an Enfield. Slavaboo? Get an SKS or Nugget. Just want to get into milsurp on the cheap? You're about a decade too late, but your best bet would be a Mosin or an off-brand Mauser like a Turkish or Spanish one.

The worst part is that I've been THINKING about getting into milsurp for a decade, I bought my Nugget back then and just kinda...stopped.

I've spent about $2000 in the last couple of months and I'm earmarking $1500 for milsurp this month, which will almost 100% certainly get spent.

Ive got a late war 1944 byf k98 im trying to get back together. It's missing some pieces here and there, luckily everything that is serialized matches still. From the what I have seen, later in the war parts were continuously simplified or deleted from the rifles to save material. In the case of the front sight hood, could it have been built without one? Or would 1944 be to early for them to eliminate the hood? From what I can tell, the only late war "budget" pieces on the gun is the front barrel band, and possibly the spring for the band, although the spring is lost.

I had them delivered to my office, and all my coworkers except one was wondering what the fuck was in 4 wooden crates with slav-runes on them.
>>
>>33872695

>but I've never really seen a shitty-looking K31, at least as far as the wood goes

depends on how you define shitty. if you mean the wood doesn't look rotted or some shit then yeah k31s are well used and kept so there's no rot or heavy stock damage. if you mean the stock is perfect then I am jealous because all k31s I have seen in video and the one I own have stock damage to some degree because of how the swiss used and stored them.

but in terms of the two items are you planning on shooting either of them? do you care about their history or mechanics in particular?
>>
>>33872840
I like to think I care about the history for the sole reason that I'm interested in them. I'm generally of the mentality that I like to be able to shoot any gun I own, and either of those would be relatively easy to fulfill that desire with, considering rarity of ammo vs. other things that are out there.

I get the impression that I'd be more hard-pressed to come across another 1900 before I'd come across another K31, but I've been pining for a K31 for a while so it's really an even tossup. I mean from what I've looked at since I saw the 1900 it really seems like a neat pistol in general from how it's built, and it has that JMB background to it. I think based on what I'm typing now it sounds like the 1900 would be more what I'm leaning towards, but we'll see what I follow through with tomorrow, or if I follow through with anything considering I'm a lot more lusty when I'm a little buzzed (which is right now)
>>
>>33872896

yeah I'd say sleep on it. maybe ask them questions on the 1900 to be sure it isn't some Chinese knock off or some shit.

either way they both seem like good deals and I wish you good hunting.
>>
>>33872705

I've found that at some ranges what's allowed depends largely on who's working that day.

There's a local indoor that doesn't allow Mosins because all the people shooting steel core but they sell Brown Bear on their shelves.

When I asked the clerk if I could shoot my Mosin if I just shot what they sold he said I probably could, but it depended on who was working at the time.

There was a little sticker on the outside of the plastic wrap that was holding the boxes together by the shipping label. But it wasnt a HUGE ASS OMG BOOLETS thing. More fine print type of thing.

You'll be amazed to hear this, but dropping a flat-rate padded envelope into a USPS mail collection box costs about $6.50.
You can't put those inside a standard letter envelope (one that would only cost you a stamp), they're much too wide, and other-than-flat-rate is more expensive.

Can anyone tell me about how good CMP M1s lately? I've wanted one for years but never really bothered to look at the CMP til recently considering gun show prices are outrageous.
>>
>>33875141
No matter what you're getting a quality M1 from them, I drove down to the south store a bit back and picked one up. They don't have much of an inventory though. But you can get the same thing for the same price or even less if you just look around gun shows. The cheapest one they have is $830 and its always sold out, expect to pay atleast 1200 + at the store.
>>
>>33875154
I live in SE Wisconsin and good milsurps are impossible to find. I used to see dudes charging $700 for cleaned up m38 mosins. My girlfriend swears we looked at an M1 for $800 but most dudes buy them in bulk and resell them for double at gun shows. I had to go through a pawn shop in Virginia to buy an SMLE that wasn't chopped in half if that's any indication to how poor the milsurp market is here.
>>
>>33875189
Damn, I live in south carolina and the last gun show I went to I saw multiple SP1's and Garands lieing around. Must be a rough life, CMP is probably your best bet then.
>>
>>33875202 Last time I went to the local show it was the last day right before close but the only good shit I saw was a 1921 mosin m91 that was practically mint, an m1, and an m1D sniper. I found a way to meet the firearm activity requirement without actually having to be in an activity and there's a range down the road so I figured if I can't find an m1 at a show I'll just go through the CMP
>>

Bro I know those feels. I bought a 1955 Romanian made mosin m44. Took it to the range and the bolt was stickier than hell. Had to beat it to close it and I fired it once. Decided it recoiled way too hard to even continue. Got home and the whole thing just rusted up.
>>
>>33875548
nope none at the CMP stores and they have a sign there saying dont ask about them. I have a collector nearby I met at a gun show and he showed me his collection and saw a couple there.
>>
>>33875557
I've seen a few vietnam era 1911s. My original plan was to buy a luger for my 21st and use it for concealed carry. But I really don't go anywhere that would warrant having a gun except for school as odd as that sounds. Most shootings are on college campuses I wrote a paper about it blah blah blah. And reading the headline "White Man in German Greatcoat Shoots Non White Man With Nazi Pistol" is probably gonna spark some racial controversy
>>
>>33875582
Man I love me some nazi pistols, they're way too pricey for my budget though.

I've been dying to find any form of PPK. There's a ton of Nazi party PPKs for like 6k floating around but I just want an all blued one. The S models and the 22 lr guns are everywhere but a genuine PPK is nearly impossible to find from what I can tell.

I picked up an all matching Yugo SKS at a little gun store in LA. Its got a super shiny stock and while the outside was free of cosmoline, the inside was still filled with it. The stock has matching numbers as well, could this have been made this way and imported shiny? Seems strange to refinish a stock this nice and never clean out the cosmoline. The bluing is 100% and there wasn't a single bit of wear on the internals. Not even the hammer.

I don't think there is any modern 6.5x53mmR; the Dutch were the last ones using it and that was 60 years ago. Paying $300 for an M.93 carbine I think you got a great deal; they're relatively rare since Romania got it's shit pushed in by the Germans.

>>33876321
I believe so. Tbh i just kinda bought it on a whim. But im 99% sure. Its a staight pull if that helps.

Romanian M.93 Mannlichers aren't straight-pull; they're a turn-bolt. None of the production-level Mannlicher straight-pull rifles were in 6.5x53mmR either.
>>
>>33876379
Then it must be a bolt action. The guy probably didnt know what he was talking about because i am positive of the chambering. My guess would be that you are correct in it being the Romanian M95 and this seller has no idea what he is talking about.
However, i wont know until i get it (will post pics) but i have no doubt that you know what youre talking about! Thank you!
>>
>>33876413
No, you got this.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Mannlicher_M1893_Carbine

And yes, the cartridge is pretty much a hand load only proposition. You can use Swiss GP90 loads I believe, but not GP11. So yeah.

For $300 though that's hard to beat. I usually see them go for $1200-1500.
>>
>>33876458
Awesome! But that good of a deal almost sounds kind of suspicious. Should i worry?
>>
>>33876458
If it's that, then it's not 6.5x53mmR.
>>
>>33875911

There's a lot more Mausers than K31s around. I'd suggest going K31 first as I expect their price will go up for a while before levelling out. Also there's still Swiss milsurp ammo around, which is match grade for plinking price.

Mausers are probably about where they will be for the long haul already, and their milsurp ammo is uncommon and of questionable quality.

You probably won't be upset with either choice though.

No surprise really, The savages are considered the best made and most accurate after the Long Branches. I have had 2 and regret selling/trading them.
>>
>>33876471
It could be fucked with obviously but the guy might just figure it's in a fairly unshootable caliber and want to get rid of it. Probably should have done more research before dropping $300. But that's life, the most valuable lessons usually cost money.
>>
>>33853368
If the hollow part is in the Ball of the bolt handle, you may have a number 5 bolt. Lots of them got mixed up and they are interchangeable. It was a weight saving thing for the Jungle carbine. As long as the head spacing in correct it is not a problem.
>>
>>33877337
No you are not. Even mediocre bores can be surprisingly good shooters sometimes.
>>
Is there a good way to make sure a rifle barrel is free of cosmoline? I think I finally got it all out of my SKS, but want to make damn sure before I try to shoot it.
>>
>>33877647
