This should only be done in extreme temperatures

Just a question about that hip support thing. I can't pull up the source but i read that hip belts only act as a means to keep the pack from moving around. Before that i would always since the belt tight at the hips so the weight of the pack was all on the hips and not the shoulders.
Which one is true?

>sleep on your maps
For what conceivable reason?

You could put them inside the flattened backpack or just put them somewhere else too of course.
It is however a good place to put all of your stuff, into a makeshift bed.
Convenient in terms of space.

A good padded belt does distribute the weight, some people don't like it for some reason.

DON'T sleep with the clothes you wore all day.
