SMG vs. PDW

Functionally they are the same, and they are used for practically the same purpose.

The only difference is that PDWs were specifically designed to be able to defeat body armor. SMGs are just pistol caliber machine guns.

SMGs are built around pistol caliber rounds, PDWs use specialty rounds made to give armor-penetrating velocities out of SMG-length barrels.

They're intended to replace or supplement handguns for personnel who either work in the back lines or are in vehicles, so small size, compactness, and good ergonomics are also prioritized in PDWs.

All wrong. The H&K MP5K-PDW is, as the name implies, a PDW in 9x19mm and it doesn't penetrate level 2 body armor. The PP-19, PP-90 and Vityaz SMGs both fire Russian overpressure rounds that defeats level 2 body armor, yet they still go under SMG and not PDW.

But something like an M1 carbine often gets called a PDW nowadays. Seems like SMG is more of a physical designation (pistol-caliber full auto weapon, generally larger than a pistol), while PDW simply has to do with its intended role.

The M1 is no PDW as it lacks full-auto. The M2 could count as one. And what about all 7.62x25mm SMGs, like the PPSh-41 and PPS-43? They are all full-auto and 7.62x25mm defeats level 2 body armor. Are they SMGs or PDWs?

You're right that's its a marketing term, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a set definition. The MP5K PDW was specifically named as it was pushed out the door in a hurry to draw attention away from the newly unveiled P90, its still functionally an SMG. Names mean nothing to H&K, all their SMGs are considered machine pistols and the HK53 was marketed as an SMG. As for the Russian guns you mentioned, of course they are SMGs. They're still firing pistol rounds, them being hot loads doesn't change that.

The source is me. That's one source. Anyway, the term personal defense weapon is stupid - like assault weapons. Any weapon used for personal defense is a PDW. Homeland Security defines the M4 as a personal defense weapon, and an AR15 in civilian hands.

All H&K SMGs are called MP because in German you don't make a difference between SMG, machine pistol and PDW - they are all called Maschinenpistole (MP).

By the way, the East-Germans called the AK a machine pistol (MPi is an abbreviation for Maschinenpistole).

Marketing. The term "PDW" has been applied to tons of different guns. From the original NATO request that led to the P90 and MP7, PDW just mean "gun" without saying the word "gun". They wanted a shoulder-fired PDW (smg/rifle/whatever) and held held PDW (pistol). The term PDW wasn't specific to any form factor.
