Why do turkeys need elephant gun power to take down?

t. Never hunted turkey but bought a couple boxes of pic related for novelty factor

my first kill was a giant tom turkey with a .22lr
>>
Different animal but I've body shotted a pheasant with #4 super X shot and the thing ran. Just adrenaline.

>Elephant gun power
>Birdshot

The fuck are you even talking about
>>
Turkeys are weary critters with a fairly small killzone(that won't ruin the meat.) this means that they require long range and tight patterns to reliably bag.
>>
>>33840692

higher velocity and heavier loads mean tighter patterns at longer ranges so you can guarantee at least a couple pellets in the head for a kill shot.

it's not like they need all 2oz of shot in them to take them down.

800 grains worth of shot at 1300 fps out of a 7 lbs gun will make a bitch out of you, I promise.
>>
>>33840777
Not really.
>>
>>33840723
2 oz. 3 1/2" magnum turkey load at 1300fps gives almost 3300 ft-lbs of kinetic energy, about 1000 ft-lbs less than a typical .375H&H load.

out of a much lighter gun

probably all those years fighting Curds and Greeks have hardened them
>>
>>33840962
The weight of the gun has little to do with it, the powder in the shotshells burns much faster than the powder in the rifle and that 835 grain load gets up to speed pretty quickly. This generates a much higher recoil impulse.

>Curds
pretty cheesy anon
>>
Is .223 good for hunting turkey?
>>
>>33841273
If it's legal in your area, sure. Most places ban rifles on public land.

This stuff is my favorite, I shoot a few boxes every so often.

k faggit

Well, I guess it's a matter of how you grew up. All we had were SxSs and then my dad finally let me use his browning for squirrel hunting. When I bought my first shotgun it was a Remington 1100 and it felt like I was shouldering a bag of feathers.
