So why is Japan sending their second newest helicopter carrier off on its own on escort mission? Aren't carriers supposed to operate with escorts?
>>

They're not at war, who's going to sink it?

Whoever did sink it would then be at war, Japan might actually welcome that. Norks are the only candidate and Japan might quite like the idea of dealing with that once and for all, not to mention a political excuse to tear up their constitution.
>>
>>33837902
They call it helicopter destroyer for a reason. It is the escort.
>>
>>33837981
>They're not at war, who's going to sink it?
They're allied with America, and are going out to escort a USN auxiliary that has been marked for death by DPRK. Gee I wonder.
>>
>>33838053

Are you suggesting that you have a better understanding of the risks involved than the JSDF?
>>
>>33838082
But why not send out additional, more maneuverable, destroyers? Like Kongos, Hatakazes, or Akizukis? Why solo mission with a carrier?
>>
>>33838128
It's not a solo mission.

It's going to protect a CBG
>>
>>33838128

Why? If the escort is sufficient, the escort is sufficient.

And maybe the other ships have their own commitments and maintenance cycles to match.

But by itself? Can it really take on twenty-eight or more subs by itself?
>>
>>33837902
Jesus christ, each season I swear you kids get fucking dumber. It carries sub-hunting equipment. It carries sub-hunting helos. Fuck, it's like the thing was built from its keel-laying to fuck up submarines!
>>
>what are ASW helicopters
>>
>>33838203

This isn't WW2. You don't have wolf packs of submarines searching around trying to kill shipping.

The Izumo is most likely there for plain old maritime security reasons. Nothing crazy. But knowing the local waters and language is a must.
>>
>>33838255
>This isn't WW2. You don't have wolf packs of submarines searching around trying to kill shipping.

Tell that to North Korea and its fifty-some 'missing' submarines.
>>
>>33838289

Yes and you can tell that to Lloyds, USN, JSDF etc etc

If they thought the risk was serious enough you wouldn't have shipping moving through.
>>
Just did a CMANO test.

Izumo was a pushover. My Chinese Shang-class SSN had no problem getting its heavy torps onto target and sinking it.
Getting near it was also not a problem, since it's bow sonar sucks and has short range, and it doesn't even have TASS. I could get near the Izumo with the SSN sailing 30 knots below the layer, and then encroach upon it at 5 knots until 20km torpedo distance.
It was ded immediately.

Biggest weakness: No TASS and VDS that could have allowed it to listen to subsurface targets below the thermocline layer.

Izumo is 4/10.

Does that game take into account all the equipment that the helicopters could carry? What about drones n shieet?
>>
>>33838355
Sorry, but lacking sensors in RL will make it end up the same as in the simulation.

I think the Izumo is not for standalone operations, but rather needs ASW frigates providing sonar data for its helicopters.

Izumo is pretty much an attack platform without eyes. It needs others to see.

>>33838379
It pretty much does.

Helicopters are good, but their search area for ASW is pretty small and they will only stumble across goblins per chance, as dipping sonar and MAD are very short ranged.

Best way for ASW is to have some A-TAGOS with big ass SURTASS somewhere acting like an anti sub AWACS, while an ASW carrier like the Izumo goes in for the kill with its helos.

>>
Yes. Prime Minister Tojo will pay for this! (I thought we were LARPing WWII since OP seems stuck with WWII naval tactics)
>>
>>33838474
Nope, they don't have that on the Izumo. Only the J/QQQ-21 bow sonar with 40nmi range, but is limited to the layers above the thermocline border.
The reason why my sub could encroach it was because it sailed below that layer.

Other ASW assets that actually deserve the name have VDS and TASS for that, which they drag behind them to dip them under the thermocline layer. But not the Izumo.

Sorry weebs.

That or deaf. So many sonobouys you'll be able to walk to the mainland.

Nice scenario. Just not doable, since sonobuoys have just hours of lifetime.

Trust me, China is more scared at Japanese SSK and their SOSUS than any surface combattant.

TASS is great, if you want to find subs behind you.

Helicopter assets are best overall. Can dip below really any thermocline layer and scout ahead/around.

>>
>>33838336
I wish the world would just use CMANO to settle wars since it's so accurate. Just leave the troops in their barracks, jets in their hangars and ships pier side.

"Well, you see China. One of our autists on a Senegalese sand stone carving forums ran a simulation, and you would lose. Let's just end this now."

Not really, the whole carrier escort thing is mostly a meme

More carriers is better then more escorts
They can escort themselves just as good as anything else.
>>
>>33837902
It's the escort It's made to hunt subs with ASW helos. If someone went to War they would avoid it with subs.

Currently has 7 anti-submarine warfare helicopters and 2 search and rescue helicopters. More could be flown to it with up to 28 rotary or STOL aboard. It can support Ospreys and STOL/VTOL. If Japan wanted to they could get some AV-8Bs.

http://www.jeffhead.com/worldwideaircraftcarriers/22ddh.htm a public source.
>>
>>33838128
They aren't sending a Kongo do ASW duty, it's not their role. Izumo is perfect for that kind of mission and is basically its own escort.
>>
>>33841005
>>33840960

I wouldn't say that. A helicopter carrier is a useful part of an ASW group, but you wouldn't send it on its own. Smaller primary ASW escorts like the Takanami-class with towed sonar arrays are a vital part of the ASW mission alongside the LPH.

An enemy submarine up against a single LPH has a decent chance of taking it out and making a getaway, against a number of vessels, this becomes much harder.
>>
>>33838289
They aren't missing. They are on the bottom of the ocean. Either there or within 20km of the North Korean coast, since they are offshots of Yugoslav midget submarines from the 70s and 80s.
>>
>>33843952
Or maybe they just found a lot of South Korean fishing nets
>>
>>33840247
Shit, i kinda wanna read those treads now
>>
>>33844612
They were real bad. That post is actually barely touching half the shit he did. He would half load F/A-18's, purposely have them radiating like crazy to get picked up on radar easier, max range launching (easier to intercept), no reloading, no second launching, no EW, etc. He would pretty much deploy USN in most retarded un-realistic way possible without running any EMCON, have them have minimal defensive missile's loaded (while Chinese ships have nothing but defensive missile loads), and other completely stupid things.

Others would then turn around and without changing the China loadout/deployment simply run the USN in a non-retarded manner and completely trounce the China fleet. He would then bitch, they would "comply" and change the scenario in accordance to his bitching... and surprise still trounce the China fleet.

In the end it is still a game, a fairly realistically modeled game, but everything cannot be modeled or completely realistic.

Ok a test for those who model with it. Can you simulate a real engagement that actually happened and get approximately the same results?
