I was looking into being an armorer but in the last thread I was informed it's a really shitty job.

What's a good job in the Army or Air Force that isn't combat, and someone who's retarded at math but very good at everything else can do?

I'm pretty open, as long as it isn't overly repetitive and I get to be around other people while I do it. I'm really social and I get bored really easily.

I used to be like you. That's a symptom of laziness unless you have a legitimate disability. Hopefully the service straightens that out.

I'm aware of how important it is, and used to go to tutoring 2 hours a day while I was in college and I still can't even do math on paper.

From the last thread...

>Just got back from MEPS today, need help with my job list.
>I was told I needed to list 9 jobs and an aptitude area. I listed:
>1NOX1 - Operations Intel
>1N4XI - Fusion Analyst
>3DOX2 - Cyber Systems
>3DOX3 - Cyber Surety
You don't want this. Not at all cyber, you deal with paperwork and security procedures.
>3D1X2 - Cyber Transport
>3D1X1 - Client Systems
>4JOX2 - Physical Medicine
>4A2X1 - Biomedical Equipment
>4AOX1 - Health Services Management

>I selected the Electrical aptitude area to avoid the risk of getting something shitty in Open General. Here's the thing, my recruiter says that if I leave my aptitude area Electrical, I will definitely get it because of my scores, but most of the jobs in that aptitude I don't want either.
>What do? If I go Open General will I definitely get a shitty job? My recruiter says it's not likely and most of his recruiter that in to basic Open General got Intel or Medical Jobs. He also says there's a chance I wont get booked open general if I select it, and I could get a different job off my list right off the bat.

This is tough. If you get booked for open general, you run the risk of getting the seriously ass jobs... Security Forces comes to mind. Me personally, I'd run the risk of possibly getting an electrical job I may or may not like, vs an awful general job like security forces or services.
IIRC, you won't necessarily be put in for the open aptitude area that you choose. You get that open area if your other selected jobs aren't available, and then at BMT you'll pick a list of open jobs in your open area, and get assigned one of them.

In my flight all the open general guys got medical/intel, but the MTIs were sorta surprised. They said that they've seen all the open generals in flights get assigned SecFo, so I guess it is just based on manning levels at that moment.

Hey guys, I'll be graduating high school next month and I want to join the military. Looking on advice on what branch I should go with. I am considering the Seals or the Green Berets but I really don't know so looking for ideas

I don't want to be a desk jockey or a POG. I want to slay bodies. Ideally, I'd like to be in a branch or unit where I can choose my own missions. Like where and when I'd go. It would also be pretty cool to be able to choose and customize my own weapon instead of using the standard boring shit the infantry gets.

I also want to be an officer. I'd like to go in as at least a Captain. I've been told officers get better pay and benefits and generally get treated better

What branch should I look into first?
>>
>>33837062
Intel, cyber, medical.
Hell, even MX if you have to, it's not terribly repetitive and it's definitely social.

Jobs to avoid:
>security forces - scanning IDs all day is ultra monotonous
>services - dishing up eggs and handing out towels at the gym
>personnel/admin jobs - making IDs and processing the same forms all day
>finance - math is involved
>many CE jobs can be repetitive

How does someone end up retarded at math?

Math requires lots of repetition and practice to do it properly, though if you miss a step at a previous level but don't know it then you're fucked trying to learn the higher level stuff. Basically the "smart but lazy" types are good at everything but math.

E-4 across the entire branch.
Some bases you get out earlier, since there's only so much dorm space, and they need to make room for newer airmen.

>>33837986
Most assignments are quite good, some can suck if you're stuck working on irrelevant 30 year old equipment.

What the fuck?

Is this what self proclaimed "smart but lazy" people tell themselves?
>>
>>33838017
Really E-4, is that the norm? I've heard even the Army is like E-6 usually
>>
>>33838005
I chose it for all the career options once I get out, plus just to see if a three year shut in can handle the """hardest""" program in the navy. Dollars and working with science shit is neat too.

It's not that hard, there's just a high volume of work. Everything is simplified, you're niy gonna see math past an algebra 2/ trig level. Electricity can be a bit tricky though.

It's a high volume of academics on top of some military duties, most days I wake up at 4 am and don't sleep till 11 pm. Weekends are nice though.
>>
>>33838050
The AFI says that Airmen with E-4 and 3 years time in service are authorized to live off base.
There's really no point in keeping people in barracks for more than a few years.
>>
>>33838145

>tfw you perked up at E-4 getting to live off base
>tfw by the three year mark you expect to be E-5 barring a massive fuckup so the point is moot
>>
>>33838174
Most places you'll move out at E-4, no matter time in service. That 3 years is an absolute deadline.

How do you plan to make E-5 in 3 years? You'd have to enlist as an E-3, possibly make BTZ depending on when you enlist, and make it the first time you test.
Don't get me wrong, it's possible... my supervisor did it. It's just quite rare.

I don't. I doubt my intelligence all the fucking time because I'm so bad with math. I can do everything else great, but no matter how much I beat my head against the wall with math, I don't get it. I've never even done long division or fractions by myself because I freeze up or try to do it and I fuck it up somehow and don't know how I did it. Hard part is when people that are good at it try to teach you and they act like it's simple and get surprised that I get stuck on such "easy" shit.

It sucks, man.
>>
>>33838472
Anon, you might be retarded. Go watch some YouTube videos on that shit and figure it out.
>>
>>33838307
I'm sure you're hot shit, but you *cannot* count on getting BTZ.

Anyways, here's the numbers...
To be eligible to test for the 2019 SSgt promotion cycle:
You must have enlisted (1st day of boot camp) prior to the 1st of August 2017
You must be SrA before the 1st of Feb 2019

To make the Feb 2019 cutoff, you'll have to get BTZ. You'd also have to ship out to boot camp this month.
You'd get BTZ Jan 2019, test for Ssgt May 2019, find out in Aug, and then you'd probably have to wait until the summer of 2020 to sew on the rank.

If you're shooting for the 2020 promotion cycle, the prime time to ship out would be September, which ensures that you will be SrA in Jan 2020, probably sewing on spring/summer of 2021.
No BTZ required.

In reality, ship out ASAP, because waiting to ship is just wasted time.

Depends on the mission. I've gotten BAS since I first arrived at my first duty station, but it's because of my mission and the fact that I spend about 6 months at a """"""deployed"""""" location (CONUS).

Also we got what's called "save pay" because the DFAC shut down for like a year, so I was getting about $800 per month in BAS. Good times.

Oh, and about having cars... I had all this in the pic at one point. No one ever said anything. Make sure they're all registered though.

that probably works fine for the 99% of jobs that only require a shitty basic security clearance, but I wouldn't lie about anything if you're going for something that needs a TS-- I've read stories from guys who got busted because they lied about smoking pot and a friend of a friend of a friend told the investigator about it. You can make hella money contracting with a security clearance.

>>
>>33840711
I don't know, it was just one story I read about, it may or may not be true. But I know investigators will go hardcore into your past for a TS and talk to people that you've never met before, and if they say anything that doesn't match with your story, they will pick it apart and question you about it. Plus some jobs require occasional polygraph tests and if you fail that, then you're fucked for sure

Polygraphs are 100% full of shit
They
Don't
Work

But the public thinks they work
You ask a person a scary question (i.e. DID YOU BREAK THIS RULE) their heart will flutter and their skin will sweat and all that junk
Because every normal person will think "Oh fuck, maybe I did? Did I? Could they think I did?"

The way a polygraph test "works" is that they browbeat you with questions and then at the end go "We got an anomalous response here. It says you're lying. We KNOW you lied. So tell us you lied"

All you have to say is "Huh, that's funny. I was telling the truth".

Polygraphs don't work and the people who read their results know they don't work.

Even if you did fuck up and have to lie, deny deny deny deny. They really can't know the truth until you let them.

Analysis and Control Element. I don't know much about it but that's where I've been told 35F's "do their job." An S2 shop is basically more administrative work and hardly deals with being an intelligence analyst unless you're deployed.

Your free time is more dependent on your unit. I've been in units that cut us loose once we got everything done for the day. I've been once before when I was trying to join the MuhReens. I passed with flying colors except for when I was supposed to swear in they weren't happy with my misdemeanor arrest and I wasn't allowed to join. It's not drug or violence related, basically trespassing.

Anyways I'm going for the Chair Force this time and want a job in communications/intelligence. With my ASVAB scores that will happen.

I just need a refresher on MEPS. From what I remember it was wake up really fucking early, eat breakfast, dress nicely and say yes sir, no sir only to the MEPS people.

Anything else I should know for MEPS?
>>
>>33841185
You give them the names of like 3 people on the SF86

They interview them, ask them to give names of some other people who know you. They go talk to them and may repeat that to find more people who know you but you didn't put on the paper
>>
>>33841133
You know your stuff dude.. thats good stuff for me to keep in mind.. i guess now all I have to worry about is the background check. got busted for pot back when I was 18..

>Keep accountability of your inventory when you're an XO

You'll probably be a general some day if you follow these. You could probably also break all of these and still be a general. Just don't fuck up too bad till you're at least a Major.
>>
>>33841206
>Anything else I should know for MEPS?
not really it's pretty straightforward, you've already done it before so you should know everything. drink lots of water at breakfast so you can piss on command
>>
>>33841258
You are being a little silly

But I had to sign some things that said exactly that
I found it a little "modern" that under the "Don't harass" section there was even a thing about not making fun of people's mannerism
Literally don't mock anyone.
Ever.
For any reason. Unless they fuck up, I guess. There wasn't any clause about fuck ups. Unless they're habitual about it and it becomes a mannerism .
>>
>>33841292
Okay cool. I can always piss on command so that shouldn't be an issue for me.
>>
>>33841185
In my case they literally went to the references I listed, talked to them about me, and then tried to get names out of them.
I don't think they really followed up on the names, since my references gave good impressions, and the most of the names they got were college students, who are hard to get ahold of.

They just make a judgement on you as a person and your life. They saw me as a white kid, straight out of HS, from a middle class neighborhood, with nerdy friends. Low risk.

>>33841206
Jeez man has it been that long since you went?
>wake up really fucking early
Lol. IIRC you have to wake up at 4:30, pretty darn early but honestly not that bad.

>eat breakfast
Yeah man pig out on that hotel free breakfast as long as you're not close to weight.

>dress nicely
Casual in the fashion sense, so just like jeans and a button down shirt. Basically don't show up in sweats and a beater or some shit.

>say yes sir, no sir only to the MEPS people
Pretty much.

>>33841297
Leave it to the NCOs to mock and otherwise harass people who are out of line. They'll have a more personal relationship with their troops, and it will be more man-to-man than coming from the scary bars and leaves.
As an officer, you're supposed to be a higher, impartial authority, and mocking people can give the impression that you are targeting them, which can cause serious problems.

You shouldn't be mocking people just because of mannerisms... I believe that crosses the line to a personal attack.
>>
>>33841399
>say yes sir, no sir only to the MEPS people

you'll get snapped at by some since they are almost all not officers

>>33841432
It sucks, don't get me wrong, but depending on the type of unit/branch that you're with, there's a definite divide between Os and Es.
What I was trying to say is that you shouldn't be doing the front line discipline as an officer. It's like how you can be cool with the director of your department at work, but you shouldn't bypass your supervisor and go to him to get things done.

What branch / MOS are you?

>It sounds so 19th century British
>Should I try to have like this fucking distance and shit?

It's a relic from the old days, but it's survived well into the present due to the career implications of "fraternization". Training commands work hard to put the fear of officers into junior enlisted, and teach officers to fear the enlisted as walking pink-slips.

An older Army Officer's manual stated:
>"Enlisted men are stupid, but extremely cunning and sly, and bear considerable watching."

I guess basically once you get in, you'll feel out what I'm saying.
Just try to be as cool as possible with all your troops, and don't let the crusty SNCOs isolate or stop you.

Anybody generalizing the living conditions of the branch is dumb. Your MOS matters WAAAAAAY more than branch for living conditions.

A US Army Public Relations specialist in DC is going to have a higher standard of living than an Air Force fuel cell repairer.

Same deal with the "which branch is more operator?????". An Air Force EOD guy is going to actually go do way more operational missions than a Marine Corps supply specialist.

Does being a pharmacist in the Air force sound like a good idea?
>>
>>33845462

Yes. If by pharmacist you mean with an MD, yes. Getting your med school paid for, starting with Captain base pay + BAH + Medical Specialist Bonus puts you right at or in six figures, much of which is tax free. If you're a medical practitioner then the time also counts as your residency. Your commitment is six years.

As a non-military practitioner you have a 3-5 year residency in which you won't make above 6k before your 185-250k salary kicks in. The extra couple of years spent in the military cutting your teeth before you leave to that salary is more than made up for by the investment of the difference in your net military pay times investment plus the interest on six figure med school loans.

I don't know how long pharmacists have to do residency, but it's fucking worth it.

College admittance is up to the school. The GI Bill just pays for it.

>Also does the major go along with your mos?
The GI Bill gives you 36 months of college. What you choose to study is totally up to you.

You use the GI Bill after you get out of the service, most branches have some form of tuition assistance while you're active.

They tend to have better jobs that they actually like and are also slightly smarter on average. The combination of good job that they enjoy or at least value the skill they are learning for post service life (airplane mechanics make good money) and being skilled means that they are a little more self motivated so the officers don't have to ride them as much and cut them A LITTLE more slack than the other branches as long as the work gets done.

Kind of like the civilian work world, if you treat your employees like valued team members they tend to perform better than if you scream at them to get shit done.

Yeah, its called being in a command role. Every successful Navy NFO, USMC 75-series or Air Force 11-series ends up in a command role. As a former commander looking for a civilian job, you will make 3 times as much as a normal military retiree.

You will not end up flying glorified schoolbuses like airliner pilots. You'll be the guy in charge of them. Or someone else. Lots of former aviation commanders end up in million dollar lobbyist roles.

Pharmacists do not go to med school.
They go to pharmacy school.
Currently I don't believe that they are looking for many pharmacy officers due to the overwhelming glut of graduates in recent years.
>>
>>33850374
Rob Riggle is the perfect example of everything that is wrong with the Marines. They should be a small group of elite fighters, like they claim. Instead that are a bloated second Army with a smaller budget that somehow convinces people to join up and deal with their bullshit because of their self inflated sense of importance.

It should be noted you can work on a base, serving military remembers and their families and not be a member of the military. My sister worked in a Target pharmacy for years as a Pharm D, I guess her salary is in the 160k range. The management changed and she is considering an offer from the base she is near, and I know it isn't a commissioned position because she is over 41. Not sure of the salary.

So I have a friend who's been trying to enlist for years now but hasn't had any luck. Can't remember what branch he originally picked but since then he's apparently tried the Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Army. Recently he's telling me he's looking at the Guard because of flight reasons (He has been doing some flight stuff on the side for years too, he really wants to be a pilot.)

I just don't get why he hasn't been serving yet, is this something that actually happens in regards to enlisting or is he not telling me something? Last I visited him he was in good health and has had doctor check-ups, etc.
>>
>>33853276
There's probably something he's not telling you. At the very least the army would pick him up if everything checks out good.

Could be anything from cold feet to some complication in his background. Have you tried asking him?

It's backwards from what you said.
The minimum standards are what they expect to be able to train to acceptable in boot camp.
If you can't pass PT at boot camp, you usually will stay longer in a section dedicated to PT.
If you're there too long, you get kicked out. Just ensure you can pass the PT test before you ship out.

>>33853276
He's not telling you something, the Army will take most anyone who doesn't have a felony and has a pulse.

If you just need some more jobs to pad it:
>3D0X4 - Programmer
Put this in.

>4A2X1 - Biomedical Equipment
I'd replace Crypto with this, linguists don't get paid a ton outside of the military

That's basically the killer lineup. As long as you don't go open, you're set to have a decent civilian career if you so choose. Also the work itself is pretty good with those jobs.

How are branches decided after OCS? I really want infantry but I'm worried my GPA isn't competitive. I'm probably going to graduate from college with a 3.3, will my 300 PT score help?

You have it backwards. The Marines are the shittiest service when you're actually in.

Once you get out nobody cares what branch you were in, just what job you did and that you got out honorably.

>Can I get a quick rundown on what dorm life is like in the AF?

Tech school was kind of like college. Definitely a sense of community, guys from my floor would hang out, weekends were pretty lit. Everyone was busy on weekdays.

In the real AF, it depends on your base. I've heard of some places having dorms that threw parties and shit every weekend, here it was more like just living in a really small apartment.
>>
Should I be wary of this recruiter that's been calling me every day tyring to get me to sign a contract with some unit in my area?

I talked with them recently about possibly reclassing into another MOS but I on the fence. I didn't score high enough on the ASVAB first time I joined and im not going to make the same mistake twice signing up for some shitty job with no payoff once I get back from AIT. Wanted to go for 25B, but shit, the employment outlook for that MOS is pretty bad. You don't even graduate with any certs so how the fuck they expect you to compete with civilians in that particular sector?
Anyway...

What does /k/, asking for a little feedback.
>>
>>33856331

I was a bit older myself when I enlisted and I found dorm life overall comfortable. Sure your room is a bit small but you have privacy and are supplied with everything you need. An annoying dorm-mate or rowdy dorm can make things a bit less enjoyable but you can live with it.

I am offbase now however and it is a substantially better experience so try and get out of the dorms early if you can.

If you have specific dorm questions I can field them

RAF don't treat you like shit from what I've heard from a few friends who served. Training isn't exactly easy but according to them it's a cakewalk compared to the army.

If you have a degree at-least think about OCS before you apply for the regulars.
>>
>>33860445
I don't have a degree, just a extended diploma so I don't know if I can get into officer training. Thanks for the info on the RAF, that's also what I've heard. Living conditions are supposed to be better as well. My plan is to try and get a qualification while I'm in training or something like that.
