Holy shit, just saw this, last photo taken by Army photographer before she and a mortar crew died.

Can we have a thread on stuff like this, photos showing actual moments before death, either the photog or the subject. IRL only, no shoops, movies or hoaxes. Sauce or backstory appreciated.

This picture was taken byserial killerRobert Ben Rhoades seconds before murdering 14-year-old Regina Kay Walters. She was one of at least a dozen young women abducted, held, and eventually murdered in an 18-wheeler equipped with a torture chamber in the back. The photo was taken in an abandoned Illinois barn, where Rhoades disemboweled her with a large hunting knife after cutting off her hair and making her wear a black dress andheels.

>The Massacre of Kondomari. On 2 June 1941, German Fallschirmjäger rounded up the civilians of the Cretan village of Kondomari in one of a long series of mass reprisals on the Greek island of Crete. The execution of the men of Kondomari was orchestrated by Wehrmacht Generaloberst Kurt Student in retaliation for the civilian participation during the Battle of Crete, which had ended in a German victory only two days prior. Throughout the Battle of Crete, the Allied forces and Cretan civilians had inflicted heavy losses of lives on the Wehrmacht soldiers. In particular, the unprecedented resistance from the local population exasperated the German sense of military order, according to which no one but professional soldiers should be allowed to fight. Generaloberst Student in particular, blamed the civilians of Kondomari for the death of a few German soldiers whose bodies had been found near the village. >On 16 December 1971, the Pakistani army surrendered. It was the end of 9-month long war, but signalled the beginning of the Great Bengali Revenge. It began with the killing of Monaem Khan, a loyalist, anti-Bengali and ex-governor of East Pakistan in the capital Dacca. What happened next on December 18th was carefully recorded above. Three photos show Mukti Bahiti extracting revenge on the people who sided with Pakistan during the independence movement. After torturing them for hours, they bayoneted and executed these four men, who were suspected of collaborating with Pakistani militiamen who had been accused of murder, rape and looting. The last picture shows a relative of one of these four men being stomped to death by Mukti Bahini.
The controversy surrounding the photos were that many photographers deemed that the massacre would never have occurred if they (the photographers) were not there. It was as if they were invited to a ‘photo-opportunity’, many recalled. Many photographers, including Magnum’s Marc

Other from this series show the moments before.

I know, but in the case of this German soldier he's in the field, it's the 1940's, his army is retreating, and there isn't much the US forces could do for him. Before anyone says it, I know what mortally wounded means but it's a nice way of saying, "he dead,"

Really tho, interesting pic, wonder why and who took it. I've found a few random albums online made by enlisted men, just for fun. It is weird, both allies and axis guys have alot of screwing around, getting drunk, playing with dogs and such, but some of the stuff the Germans chose to take pics of are kinda dark.

There was one of a falljaguer unit out on exercise, they dropped into the Austrian woods and walked home. Pretty basic stuff, but they came across some gypsies and made all the women take off their shirts and the beat up the gybo men.

Idk maybe all the 'bad' pictures allies took found their way into the trash after they went home, but it was an album made by the German fella who took the pics, with little captions and stuff. Not like he was hiding it.

I wish I had better pics, the album was for sale by some dealer, so you know, he isnt give away free high res stuff.

marine hit by mortar blast in the palau island orange beach.

>description;
“I fell flat on my face just as I heard the whishhh of a mortar I knew was too close. A red flash stabbed at my eyeballs. About fifteen yards away, on the upper edge of the beach, it smashed down four men from our boat. One figure seemed to fly to pieces. With terrible clarity I saw the head and one leg sail into the air.

I got up… ran a few steps, and fell into a small hole as another mortar burst threw dirt on me. Lying there in terror looking longingly up the slope for better cover, I saw a wounded man near me, staggering in the direction of the LVTs (Landing Vehicle - Tracked). His face was half bloody pulp and the mangled shreds of what was left of an arm hung down like a stick, as he bent over in his stumbling, shock-crazy walk. The half of his face that was still human had the most terrifying look of abject patience I have ever seen. He fell behind me, in a red puddle on the white sand.

It was established later that the invasion of Peleliu as a stepping stone to the invasion of the Philippines had not been necessary - Gen. MacArthur had already bypassed the Palaus and landed at Leyte in the Philippines.”

>A starving Chinese woman, too weak to stand, lies on the barren ground with blades of grass protruding from in her lips; a desperate attempt to find nourishment during the Henan famine. Henan Province was hit by a large-scale famine between the summer of 1942 and the spring of 1943 that led to the death of three million people. Another three million people became refugees, fleeing to other regions to escape the hunger. The famine was caused by severe drought, the ongoing destruction of fields by swarms of locusts, the domestic demand for supplies for the Chinese troops engaged in battle against the occupying Japanese Army, and the destruction of what little food remained when seized by the Japanese. Henan Province, Republic of China. November 1942. Image taken by Theodore H. White.

>In the pictures the sailor is crouched in tall grass during the battle for Hill 881 near Khe Sanh. He is cradling his comrade who has been shot while smoke from the battle rises into the air behind them. In the first frame Wike has two hands on his friends chest, trying to staunch the wound. In the second, he is trying to find a heartbeat. In the third frame, "Corpsman In Anguish", he has just realised the man is dead

He is still alive

>Married four times, with two daughters he no longer speaks to, he had been living meagerly on a $325-a-month pension. The 58-year-old told Leroy that he felt more like 80. "While not physically hurt, he suffers from extreme Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, waking from nightmares every night," wrote Le Sommier. "On his arms, he has tattoos of the names of his dead comrades. He's lost in a jungle of his own mind."

Here's a picture from one of the collections that I got from those threads. I don't know the full story, but I'm pretty sure it's from the Syrian Civil War. I'm not sure of the origin of the sparks in the image, but they appear to be entering the room through the hole in the wall, which I can't see as being a good thing for its occupants.

>The so called Elephant’s Foot is a solid mass made of melted nuclear fuel mixed with lots and lots of concrete, sand, and core sealing material that the fuel had melted through. It is located in a basement area under the original location of the core. In 1986 the radiation level on the ”Elephant’s Foot” was measured at 10,000 roentgens per hour, and anyone who approached would have received a fatal dose in under a minute. After just 30 seconds of exposure, dizziness and fatigue will find you a week later. Two minutes of exposure and the body cells will soon begin to hemorrhage; four minutes: vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. At 300 seconds you have two days to live.

The problem is, ultimately, if this happens you're going to lose your hands, you just can't armor those enough to matter. If you can deal with the thought of suddenly losing your hands, and going on in life, then fine, wear the armor.

Part of what they do, in my personal experience. EOD comes when you have a possible IED/VBIED/UXO.

CEs are the most active component in trying to prevent them. I have escorted CEs while driving 5mph down routes I wouldn't want to drive less than 50mph through.

After I was wounded, got sent to a WTU. Ran into one CE who was there after 21 blasts in one tour, with three purple hearts.

In my opinion, being a CE is nearly equivalent to being a volunteer crash-car dummy.

As horrible as it was, regarding destruction of the 31RCT, one could see the use of thermite (or WP) grenades as a case of the Chinese soldiers being ignorant of the effects of their weapons. Given that they had a habit of just ignoring surrendering soldiers and moving on, or releasing what few PoWs they did take, it's cear that the 80th wasn't exactly a crack unit.

Still, one can't imagine what they thought the result of throwing grenades into trucks full of wounded would be, regardless of the type. Surely nothing good.

Give it some time, and you'll be making puns as you gun down starving children. The trick is dehumanise them in your mind and never for a second think about it, if you start hitting your head on the wall or slap yourself.

At least there is some romance with going down with the ship and sharing a tomb with your brothers at the bottom of the murky deep. I think it would be worse to die on land and be buried in a foreign land, either ceremonially or otherwise.

Always wondered, is it best to ditch the plane when you're going down? Would you have more of a chance living if you slammed into the ground at 200km/h vs 100km/h surrounded by splinters.

>As horrible as it was, regarding destruction of the 31RCT, one could see the use of thermite (or WP) grenades as a case of the Chinese soldiers being ignorant of the effects of their weapons.

This statement could be interpreted as defending Chinese conduct, at the same time offending their intelligence. They were not mentally retarded, and could observe simple cause and effect.

Yeah, I don't like it. That project has arguably killed millions as well. If that is the price of progress, I have no wish for humanity to pay it.

Col. John Stapp survived all of his experiments (which he designed and subjected himself to). At least once he was temporarily blinded, but his vision returned.

Here's a cool documentary about it presented by Col. John Stapp.

Have you got a source for that? As I understand it all the data was destroyed and America only wanted the scientists themselves, not the data.

However Nazi data on hypothermia has actually been used.

>It's funny when people complain about hiroshima, nagisaki,
Fun fact: After the SECOND nuclear bombing, as the Emperor was making preparations to surrender, Japanese military leadership in Tokyo attempted a coup against the Emperor to prevent surrender.

Even after two nuclear bombings (which to be fair, they didn't personally witness) and MONTHS of firebombings (which they DID witness), many in the Japanese military were not ready for surrender.

Forgot to include the back story. Tony captured the very moment that a German mortar exploded and instantly killed Pvt Jack Rose. Pvt Rose collapsed to the ground dead immediately after this photo was taken.

This is one of the very few real pictures capturing the moment of death.

To add to this....

>start playing red orchestra 2
>become interested in history of eastern front ww2

>mfw interviews and diaries of Soviets that lived in 1930s around Stalingrad and the areas around it sounded like a prosperous American city

>suddenly krauts attack
>red army is finished
>conscripts start retreating and deserting
>mfw even nkvd are retreating and deserting
>somehow autistic speeches about defending motherland from Soviet commanders halts collapse of soviet defense in stalingrad
>only enough food for red army
>civilians become cannibals
>operation Uranus happens, food is now kill for krauts
>krauts become cannibals

I read about 1 kraut officer that sperged out at Paulus about seeing one of his soldiers getting shot, moments later another soldier going up to it, cracking open it's skull and scooping out its brain and eating it.

But what really made me press f internally for a few days was

>ivan wins, fritz gets btfo
>both have seen it all.... death and suffering that is unimaginable
>neither can go back to what life was like before the war

He's got a pelvic tilt, basically a harmless deformity of the spine. But I think also that jacket hangs down and out a bit as well, look at the guy on the right. There might be something heavy in the pockets helping it hang forward and down.
