A few days ago the Syrian actress Sulaf Favakerdzhi posted a video on his official page on Facebook, which captures the moment of signing of the contract about the production of a new film, whose working title "Palmyra". The video shows the signing of the contract on joint production of the film by Syrian «Shaghaf», owned Favakerdzhi, and the Russian company Proline Film, whose head is Andrey Sigle. In addition, the signing was attended by Russian director Ivan Bolotnikov, who was chosen as the director for the joint Russian-Syrian painting, as well as representatives of the Russian media. Russian-Syrian agreement on cooperation in the field of film production was signed in Moscow by the Ministry of Culture of Russian Federation with the participation of Minister of Culture of Russia Vladimira Medinskogo. The Russian agency attaches great importance to the joint Russian-Syrian film project, which further integrate Russian and Syrian cultural figures. In a similar experiment filmmaking Sulaf Favakerdzhi will participate for the first time since the release of the film Cherry Letters in 2015.
Future film tells the story of the Dagestani doctor, whose life is shattered when he learns that his wife, along with her daughters fled to Syria. He rushes after them, to save them, not thinking about the consequences. The Russian news agency "Interfax" reported that the film will be shown the devastation of the ancient city of Palmyra, after taking it as a terrorist organization LIH (banned in Russia - Ed.).. The plot makes it clear that the anticipated film - no more than a reflection of the artistic union of the Syrian regime and the Russian army.

It's funny you post about Palmyra now. IS losing in numerous places from Qalamon desert via FSA to Tabqa against SDF/YPG and even some ground around Shaer to the SAA/Russians but around Palmyra?
IS attacked the silos again today and have actually GAINED ground. They are obsessed with attacking the Palmyra silo checkpoint.
>>
>>33835067
Also with the SAA/Russians recent victory at Shaer I have a feeling that's why the SAA advances in northern Hama stalled suddenly. Rebel ATGMs and Russian advisers have convinced the SAA to pivot back to eastern Homs. The SAA feels like they sealed back enough of Hama to keep the rebels at bay and are moving forces elsewhere(my opinion) Hama is a stalemate. Granted it's still very hot on the front line and the Ruaf has not stopped heavy bombing raids .

Well they did post pictures. IS isn't claiming major advances but points around the silos which is a area they seem to care about a lot.

Instead of focusing on IS, the main theme of my post was the SAA bringing reinforcements to eastern Homs anyway. Pics from eastern Homs yesterday. A few weapons captured and a few dead 5th corp.

Actually, that is genius. If it is armor anyway. His job is to look for things in the ground that go bang. Suddently there's this hissing sound and he has three seconds to hit the deck. He'll be face down, his upper body turned away... leaving his butt as the biggest, most likely body part to be hit by shrapnel. Yeah, gimme that that butt plate.

Pro SAA sources report further movement in eastern Homs today with the capture of a montain and several villeges around it adding to my idea the SAA just put more troops in the AO.

https://twitter.com/DefenseLattakia/status/859805092794466305

Quickly running through other areas with new YPG vs TFSA fighting reported near Azaz. SDF/YPG still fighting the last holds of IS around Tabqa. JAI still fighting with Rahman corp in eastern Ghouta as Rahman corp proves once again they aren't bitch made pushing JAI out of some areas, meanwhile heavy fighting with the SAA continues in Qabon. Some minor fighting/artillery plus rebel ATGM strikes around western Aleppo, Hama and Latakia, Daara.

I have always suspected IS has a base out there somewhere. I mean underground bunkers, stocked up supplies and the whole works. They could be located near the silo area which would explain why they target it everyday.

Lastly a Russian service member has been killed in action marking the third Russian service member killed in Syria during the last 3 weeks.

Okay, going to list up the ME developments of the day as they have been reported to the moon base. Don't expect too many details or coherence.

- 'Syrian opposition' tells Russian news that they are willing to resume negotiations with Assad.

- Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar has returned to Kabul after a 20 year exile. He claims that now, he 'wants peace'.

- Far away but not unrelated, US foreign minister Rex Tillerson says that USA can 'no longer afford' make human rights a factor in their diplomatic work.

- Iraq Army this morning initiated a new offensive in Western Mosul .

- Iraqi prime minister Al-Abadi is discussing with Trump the possibility of keeping US forces in Iraq after the war with ISIS is over.

>New Israeli stealth fighters operating over Syria?
No. I don't who, or why, shills so hard for this rumor that gets circeled for the last month, but it's simply not true. IAF showed impresive resolutes in the past, and managed to field aircraft way ahead of schedule. But this stupid rumor claims they managed to finish developing, manufacturing, installing, testing, fixing all the core electronical systems that they plan for it (they basically bought just the skelton, planing to replace all the insides) and make it operational enough to enter a defended enemy air space- all in the spna of 4 (iirc) months that they had it in their disposal. Talk to me in 6 month, which is about 5 months ahead of their schedulr, and I might believe it.

Israel was one of the few, and the very last, country to support South Africa during Apartheid. They helped develop nuclear weapons. Once the ANC came into power the relationship broke down drastically.

All very pretty, and all very irrelevant. Notice the 2 missing parties from that paper: anyone from any of the rebel groups, who are opposed to the plan and their representatives there to take part in the talks stormed out in a huff, and at the time of signing called it bullshit essentially, also the Assad government is notably absent from there, supposedly they are supportive of the idea, but with neither they nor any of the rebels on board this is an even more useless bit of paper than the ones in the past that notionally had the agreement of everyone (excepting of course IS) and were all routinely ignored by everyone after a week or 2 at most.

Extra interesting is how these safe zones are supposed to work, they're in rebel held territory but if they want nothing to do with this plan it seems a little challenging to actually implement anything meaningful beyond the Russians simply not bombing those areas.

> Counter-intell
Just a fancy title for OpSec unit for the most part. 80%-90% of the work is passive and/or revolves around simply enforcing opsec procedures such going around war-rooms and kicking out people with cell phones or issuing computer access cards. The more interesting day-to-day work falls on the "questioners", or however they're called in English, who interrogate people to determine/confirm their clearance level.

Initially, I started in Sayeret Matkal (SAS/Delta Force equivalent), but fell off during boot camp when they found out that I hidden the fact that I have Scoliosis and Flatfoot. The Sayeret is part of the Intelligence Corp, so remained in that frame, and kinda was passed around until I ended up in said counter-intell as counter-cyber NCO. Naturally, I can't specify much about most of it, but the cell-phone and access cards thing can give you the general idea about the day-to-day work. Eventually I got bored sitting in office all day, so I persuaded my officers to allow me to experiment with stuff, so I ended up traveling a lot, arriving to remote bases to make connections with people to strengthen the counter-humint side of things as well as consulting commanders during exercises. That proved to be super helpful during the 2014 Gaza op, especially because I got to see things not only from the blueforce tracker in the a/c-ed office.
If you have a more specific question- I'll gladly answer what I can.

The idea of the SAA moving to eastern Homs has panned out. The SAA will attempt to break the Deir Ezzor siege. This is a similar open question I had for Hama asking if they can reach Morek. Can they do it? Regardless this is going to be fun to watch. I love eastern Homs action. The Russians could play a key role. This is their AO.

> Cool war stories from gaza?
Well, I was, what we call, a "jobnik"- an HQ office worker. Closest I ever got to actual "action" was when I went to a staging area to collect a computer retrieved from a med-evaced intell officer, and a mortar (60mm) landed about 15m away from me when I stoped to refuel.
I heard the whistle just in time to jump into prone, but it ricocheted a rock into another's guy leg. I ran to him and held the wound for few seconds until a medic that was nearby came up and started taking care of him.
It was the first time I was in a life threatening situation, so I went into auto pilot and came back only after a few minutes to realiize that the adrenaline rush gave me a slight stiffy.

> syria
Business as usual: Syria is still an enemy state that we're at cold-ish war with.
The public's general consensus, believe it or not, is to stay out of the conflict and just wish luck to all sides. The our airstrikes have little to no effect on the actuall fighting because it's a whole different front, where Syria and Hezbollah spend dedicated resources they wern't utilized in their war anyway.
We were ok with Assad: an unspoken agreement made that border the quietest one we had in 40 years (occasional cat&mouse airstrikes aside). While the government's policy was ok with this status quo, this "change in the situation" only benefits Israel: resources that once were used against us (sponsoring terror cells in West Bank and Gaza, sharing intell with Iran/Hamas/Hezbollah, attacking Israeli targets abroad), are now redirected to fights among themselves.
On the more "strategic" level of things, the dissolve of Syria weakens their claim for the Golan, which we officially annexed (unlike the Judea and Samaria) and consider ours. Further more, destruction of Syrian nationality will strengthen a position against the Palestinians (only minor threat, but major pain in the ass) by claiming that their nationality is EVEN MORE artificial.
The nearly one downside to this is that if some Daesh/AQ/Whatever will rule Syria, than we'll have unstable radicals on the border- but it's nothing we can't handle.

Now, how much Israel is involved in the fighting there? Based on my experience and familiarity with some of the bodies that would be responsible for such involvment, I would say that it's minimal. International involvment prevents us from making any influential decisions, and helping one side without insurence that it will win and it won't blow up in our face is too risky- so I believe that we mostly just observe and secure more obscure interests (protecting Druze villages, fighting Iranian footholds).
>>
Seeing we have a Mossad guy among us, and it is frankly a honor, I would like to ask how Israel's relating to Putin and his reign. I have had this idea that what with the enormous influx of Russian immigrants the Bear's influence and the Israeli friendliness toward them would increase, but last time I aired that one in this forum I was told the ex Russians couldn't care less about their ancestors' country. What do you say?

I see 2 questions here: general Israeli view/relations with Russia, and Israel's ex-Russians view/influece on the subject.
Israeli ex-Russians:
there are 2 main groups here: the ones who're indifferent twords Russia, and the ones who resent it.
Most Russian "repatriates" that came here in the 90's didn't simply migrated here, they fled here; either because they hated Russua, or because they loved Israel. Additionaly, most of them are Jews, and not actually Russian/Slavs, so have more loyalty to the "father's land" than to "mother Russia". Combine that with classic USSR-inherited education that favors nationalism (bossting the Israeli sense in them)- that's one of more hardcore Israeli sectors. The near only positive sense that they have for Russia, is merly due to nostalgia ("back in good 'ol days") and cultural association,

Will continue when I get home from work.

Thoughts on SAA/Russian "Operation Lavender" to break the Deir Ezzor siege. I definitely expect IS spoiler attacks. The SAA will need thousands of troops/armor/air support clearing out the countryside. The best hope for them is the SDF/US battle for Raqqa puts so much pressure on IS they have to abandon eastern Homs. Khanasir and Jirah airbase fronts come into play as well as Deir Ezzor city itself. Also whatever the FSA is doing in the desert south of Palmyra. IS might attack them in force.
SAA/Russians timing this to go along with the SDF/US battle around and into Raqqa.

> Israeli-Russia relations
tl:dr Russia is seen as a rival state- a stage between neutral and enemy.
They supply and support our enemies, but have no personal beef with us. Yet, some kind of diplomatic relation is maintained to keep some kind of influence over their support of our enemies, because it's a powerful country that it's best to be on good terms with and because IL feels (for many years) that Europe abandoned us and grows more hostile each day while Obama destroyed decades of good relations nearly to a point beyond repair. Here, actually, the ex-Russians make into great diplomats, as they speak the language and understand the mentality.
RU, on the other, shows a great interest in IL, because it sees it as the dominant player in the region (even if a relatively passive one) and potential local superpower. From my line of work- RU invests great a intelligence (and not only) effort in IL.

How does this translate to air traffic agreement in the Syrian area? Contrary to what some seem to believe here, it's a mutual-interests agreement, and not one of dominance assertion.
IL doesn't wait for approval to do it's stuff, nor RU adjusts it actions to IL's needs. RU was notified about some strikes (allegedly, and allegedly Israeli) and just didn't intervene, leaving Syrian AA to relay on itself. Other strikes (mainly ones where RU itself was involved) were carried out without notifying RU in ways that didn't brake the agreed upon protocol.
Why does RU tolerate this kind of behavior and, effectively, treats IL almost as an equal in this situation?
A) Because of the political reasons I mentioned in the paragraph above.
B) The IDF/IAF is capable enough to bypass any prohibition the RU can imposes under it's limited capability in Syria, so it's smarter to just make it into an agreement.
C) 1 thing that RU doesn't want, is to get into a stupid skirmish with IL that might snowball into WW3.
>>
>>33870652
I thought they were advancing to clear eastern Qalamoun IS but have advanced deep into desert near Palmyra/at T3. It's a deadly area to be without further plans. Even the SAA could attack them.

I am 49. That means I am old enough to remember the politics of the 80s, 90s, 00s. And there has been a big change in perception, of Israel as a state. They used to be seen as outcasts, same as the apartheid South Africa; totalitarian dominators of the poor Palesitinians who used to have a lot of political support here while Arafat still live. Peace Prize, ahaha. And we had those unfortunate Mossad assassinations of Palestinians. That was in the 70s and 80s. The far lefties would go in demonstrations for the Palestinian cause, while the more centric socialists would be on speaking terms with the socialist party in Israel. The only parties that really supported the Israeli cause, or rather the jewish one, were the christians party and the far right end one. It is also important that we had a few, and very vocally active, Palestinian refugees here. While Israel was represented by one embassador more embarassing than the next.

I think the music changed its tune either when Arafat died and the whole Fatah collapsed, or when 9/11 happened. After that, Israel and the Palestinians became the jews and the muslims. The Hamas were far less palatable to us than the Fatah and the political ties with the Palestinian side vanished. Meanwhile IL got Netanyahu who no one here likes, not even the pro-Israeli parties, but there are no longer demonstrations here when IL builds yet another block on occupied territory.

So now? Hamas has made no friends with us; this might not sound important but back in Arafat's day there were considerable funds going from Norway to Fatah territory. Private, and aid funds. As for Israel? The right wing block and the centrist socialists are allowing more trade and contact than in a long time, even military work. As long as you guys can avoid killing a bunch of genuine civilians or avoid be seeing aiding it, it looks like we can do business. There was a time when you might not want to say you was an Israeli in out streets. (cont)
>>
>>33871133

Today, there's no problem with that. With the born and bred Norwegians that is; we have a muslim minority here. But they are struggling more with fitting in than you would be.

What else is there? Most of the political parties, or about 90% of the voters, are either pro Israel or not particularly against them. Only some very left wing people will still boycott a fruit or product if they see it is made in Israel.

Even Mossad? The worst I can think of people mentioning you these days is that you were involved with the CIA black sites. But so was Norway. Essentially you have managed to remain respected but obscure around here anyway, and what could be better?
