I bought one of those 14" barrel Canuck Defender shotguns for camping/general shotgun stuff

I camp a lot with my family and always got a little freaked out when cars would roll into the campsite (state park) well after midnight and I'd conjure up all kinds of crazy shit that could happen since at best I had a hatchet. Now I just pack a little colt in my tent bag. Never had to do anything with it, obviously, but it's there at least.

Thinking about getting into hiking and shit this summer. Should I bring a gun with me in the event of some animal/creepy shit? I just have a handgun and AR. Poor collegefag so limited gun budget.
