Manstein was easily the best of them. I don't know a lot about Rundstedt's abilities, but Model to me just seemed like he was only really skilled with defense. I sort of blame him for the German northern wing not getting anywhere at Kursk, because he didn't even believe in the battle in the first place.

Manstein was the smartest man in the room. He knew how to play politics as well as Hitler could, and that scared the shit out of Hitler.

Rundstedt was showing his age in 1940, and was smart enough to know it when he tried to reire before the war. The man had been in the German army since Hitler was in elementry school

Model was extremely talented with defensive operations and reestablishing broken lines, but hadn't mounted a successful offensive campaign. In 1941-42 he should have co-commandered the African campign with Rommel. He could have built the defensive lines and been in charge of logistics.

Germany didn't even inflict a 2:1 kill ratio on the Red Army (pic related)o, they just killed loads of civilians and prisoners which just pissed off their enemies more (again, a bad strategic decision).

Barbarossa's strategic objective was bafflingly stupid. What was the objective? Conquer the USSR? How can you do that with just 3 army groups? How would you hit Soviet industry in the Urals? What would you do if you actually took Moscow and now had to move on Samara, where Soviet leadership had shifted to? How would you occupy and pacify a huge area like the USSR when all you do is provoke the local population with massacres? How would you logistically sustain all of this?

As much as I understand your point and agree partially with you, you need to understand a set of things. What you are referring to is the goal proper; put down the soviet regime and colonize European Russia, and you are only using the eastern front as example. German military strategic planning was admirable: Fall Weiss, conquering poland in one month, Fall Gelb, defeating the British BEF and France, and allies, in 46 days, or even the initial phase of Barbarossa where the germans successfully administered a force of three fucking army groups, totalling more than 3 million mens and equipment, reaching the outskirts of Moscow in less of a month.

Yes, the whole objective was flawed and retarded; I wouldn't say that conquering European Russia is impossible, but is nearly as. And indeed the idea of trying to subjugate the soviet government by taking Moscow was stupid, historicaly proven stupid on that. But unfortnatly for them, that was the objective set to them and there was nothing they could do about it. The great Nazi government plan was that of colonizing European Russia, a long last german dream of a March to the East in the molds of the american March to the West , aided by the german population crescent hate and fear of communism.

So, yes, the whole plan was imbecile, but the military strategic planning to achieve this imbecile goal was nothing short of startling. also don't erase the strategic merits and achievements in the other fronts.

As for the matter of the brutal treatment of local civilians, this is pretty much the historical way that the german army deal with partisan activity, with disproportionate violent force. They have a autistic hate for partisans or any other non uniformized group figthing them. Already during the Franco-Prussian War, the germans dealed with non uniformed Francs-tireurs by going to their villages, puting fire on it and hanging some people. You really didnt expected it to change, only to be even worse as they now also need to kick the local population to bring german settlers.

Also, when I said "The great Nazi government plan", I was trying to say "long term plan of the Nazi government", just to clarify.
