Iv'e worked in shipping before, mail sorting machines don't usually tear items like that - Most of the time it's a thin slit at the sides of the letter where the contents have been dragged all the way to the back of the letter by the rollers and ripped through the side. I'm not saying that it's 100% not the sorting machines, but gaping tears in the letter surface are rarely sorting machine issues and more likely mail theft or just shitty handling.

Regular envelope services make up about 75% of mail theft where i'm from, mainly because they're not insured like parcels and as you said, it's easy to attribute it to "sorting machine" errors. I caught my local postman stealing shit from the letters he put them through my door, filmed it and all, yet at his disciplinary hearing his managers bought the story that it was the sorting machine. Tl;dr - Unprofessionally marked envelopes with bulging contents are prime targets for mail theft. As for unprofessional, the "cuck" in biro ink makes that one clear. If thieves feel anything in envelopes that aren't pieces of paper (patches and jewellery), you can garuantee they'll rip that shit open and jew the contents.
