My ghetto blasters, shot both of them for the first time not too long ago, was surprised to see both of them function flawlessly. The SPAS in semi wasn't actually that bad to shoot, but when I switched it over to pump-action, that was a little hard on the shoulder, considering I was shooting 00 Buck.

Unless you want to be able to swap out the barrel for a 28" clay shooting/hunting barrel get the 590.

I got talked into getting a regular 500 at Brownells and I've kinda regretted it ever since. You lose one round of capacity with the 500 compared to the 590, and instead of just buying another barrel I bought a second 500 with the long barrel for clay shooting.

Just tested out some fiocci low recoil and law enforcement slugs. Both work well, and the wad stays with the slug, so you don't make two holes in paper when the target is ~7 yards.

Mossberg 835, essentially a beefy model 500 that only cost about 150$ more. You can pick them up used for about 350$, I got mine for 300$ but they all come with a turkey choke I think so another set of chokes is a must. I don't know what the finish is but it seems very rust resistant and I rarely clean it unless it gets rained on.

It can eat 2 3/4" up to 3 1/2" and it's fun as fuck penetrating both sides of small game like rabbits with cheap steel 3 1/2" at 30 yards. The only downsides is that it's got an inch more travel in the pump to accommodate the longer shells and you can't slowly rack it to keep extra quiet every time otherwise it might not cycle; an issue I've never had with a 500. If you rack it at a pace loud enough to actually hear it you'll never have an issue though. It's a great multi purpose gun and the extra weight makes normal length buckshot feel like light birdshot. Other than cost, I can't understand why it's not more popular.
>>
>>33817348
its cost and the exact same things you mentioned like the extra travel why bother pumping that much more when your only using 3.5 1% of the time. Doesnt help that all of em seem to have that ugly camo finish now.

I didn't notice the extra travel until someone else mentioned they were known for it and still you're losing a tenth of a second for a lot of functionality/coolness plus I use 3 1/2" a lot just because I can. There are few occasions where you want a silent cycle to a follow up shot but I won't lie and say I haven't had them. I can see the cost hurting it because you're looking at 500$ new for the gun with a set of chokes and it still can't shoot slugs without a $150 separate barrel. There's people here with KSGs so obviously costs isn't an issue for everyone on /k/.

The camouflage isn't ugly in my opinion but they should make more of them in black. I saw a film when I was a kid of some professional hunter or poacher with a similar camo on his beat up shotgun and had a hard on for it ever since.

I guess because I personally don't see them as big flaws doesn't mean other people don't and if you want a tactical shotgun it isn't a great choice.

Handguns are much more fun on paper, because they are harder to shoot and better accuracy is something you can work towards and measure. Rifles are better than shotguns on paper, but are much easier to shoot so you really need 100 yards+. Shotguns are basically center mass /yes/no in regards to accuracy at any significant distance, and are just as easy to aim as rifles. The only joy I get out of them is flying targets, and thats fun as fuck.

Which comes around back to the original question, which I've answered already, but you absolutely need a longer barrel, and a short one if you want to use it for home defense.

Alternatively, buy a decent shotgun like a A300 for clays and a pawnshop 18" mossberg for home defense.

>>
>>33814088

Got an 18" Benelli M2 with a few upgrades. Taran Tactical extended carrier because my poor fucking thumb couldn't put up with the abuse of the stock one. Why the fuck would Benelli think that shit was okay? How fucking hard is it to put something like the Taran Tactical one as the stock one? Shit.

Also got a fat bolt grip, a tab that goes over the bolt release (cheaper than drilling out the old hole and putting in a new one), a +2 mag extender, a barrel clamp, a side saddle, a sling, and then I swapped out a few parts to make it 922r compliant.

I also bought a barrel extension that screws on just like a choke that brings it up to 24" whenever I need it. Bought it just for hunting because it's cheaper than an entire barrel, it put out comparable patterns as any other barrel of that length, and it doesn't see a lot of abuse so it doesn't matter that it's inherently weaker than a solid barrel.

What is your intended use for that shotgun? Your barrel isn't long enough to blast dindus at any range, negating the need for optics. It's also too long to be of any use in tight quarters, limiting its ability to blow door hinges or dindus' skulls.

Basically, I want to know what kind of dindus you're going to be blasting.

Pistol grip shotguns are only good when you need to stow the firearm in a restrictive space, like as a truck gun. What Ian and friend failed to address is the accuracy of the PGO with arms fully extended, they dismissed that entirely by saying the total length was longer than a shotgun with a stock.

So I'm faced with a bit of dilemma now. Currently, it has a 30 inch barrel on it. I don't intend to use the Ranger for clays or hunting, and I think I'd be a lot happier with it if it had a 20 inch barrel.

But there's a part of me that would feel bad cutting down a gun that old (it's from 1937 or 38). I'm pretty positive it's been reblued (not all that professionally), sling swivels have been added, and someone mounted a recoil pad to the stock. Aside from that it's all original and numbers-matching.

Would it be blasphemy to have it cut down to 20 inches? Would paying a gunsmith $65 to cut, crown, and rebead it be worth it, or should I try to do some of the work myself?

Here's another question for anyone with an opinion on the matter, if I do decide to chop it down, should I take it down to 18 or 20 inches?

20 inches seems to be the appropriate length for riot guns of the day, but it's a heavy gun and the extra inches would probably make it a little more maneuverable.

Pic related looks to be about a 20 inch barrel.

I've only heard good things about Italian shotguns, and my brother's Nova felt really solid, but then again that's not a semi auto.
I want it mostly for hunting and clay shooting, if it matters.
I'm also curious about your barrel extension - Can you fit chokes to it as well?

Mossberg 500 furniture should fit it. Numrich has a good selection of affordable wood furniture. I bought a plan wood stock from them for about $14 and turned it into the birds head grip pictued on the five-shot. The corncob forearm on that gun also came from Numrich.

Regarding recoil, make sure the butt pad is tucked nice and deep into your shoulder. Lean forward, into the gun, when you fire. Keep your shoulders in front of your hips. If the kick bothers you now, you might wanna make sure you get a recoil pad on your new wood stock.

I'll try tucking it deep in the shoulder next time, I think I was trying to do like a 70%push and 30% pull technique that I saw online but I don't think I was doing it right. I'll also take a look on the numrich website, thanks.

No problem.
590s are really nice, it's a great choice for a first gun. I'm mad jealous of your sights, too.
>>
>>33819403
Yeah I know, I just wanted to try it out in pump-action and buckshot was all I had since you need high powered rounds to make it cycle in semi-auto.

Any particular reason?
I haven't been able to find an extra barrel and I'm pretty sure they require a little bit of handfitting.

Is it just because of how old it is? Or are these becoming more collectible?
>>
>>33828561
Do you have the 12, 20, or 16 gauge?
>>
>>33818250
How old are these Defenders? Anyone know? Not seeing anything close to these on gunbroker
>>
>>33828561
Age and if you ever do sell it chopping up the only barrel will destroy it's value.
>>
>>33828561
If you have the 16 gauge your fucked, cant find anything.

Buy a new barrel and cut the new one down, don't fuck your gun up

As much as I'd love to have a 520/30 and make a HD shotgun out of it...they aren't as common as they once were.

In gunsmithing college the instructor always said "The 520/30- the fastespt pump shotgun" as it has some real similarities to the auto-5.

Is it threaded for a choke? I have the SPX and I'm thinking that's about all I'll need to do with it.
>>
>>33829970

Laundry list of problems. I don't want to get into it and I know that sounds like a cop out but this thing made me miserable.

>>33829989

Tried too. Called them over a dozen times before I spoke to anyone and they gave me a hard time and told me they wouldn't take it back without proof I was the original owner or some trash. The gun was brand new out of the box with a recent production date, it was just a lemon.

I didn't even want to fuck with an FFL to send it back because I live in a cuck state so FFL'ing a KSG is like trying to ship a box labeled "NARCOTICS - HARD DRUGS" the sight of the black scary shotgun makes most local FFL's shit themselves thinking it's an Assault Weapon.
>>
>>33830128
You know you can send guns back without an FFL, right.

Winchester SX3, gift from my brother-in-law the day after he first visited me in the ghetto neighborhood I lived in, and had the local fauna trying to steal a metal ladder locked down on his truck within seconds of him turning his back to the vehicle.

Definitely should suffice for home defense, and since I'm in Massachusetts, and I'm not allowed to protect myself when I leave my home, it's about all I need in my fun-less life as a ghetto bound cripple who's too white and articulate to get the aid he needs.
>>
I have a Stoeger p350.

I feel like I'm the only person in the fucking world who owns this gun.

Please. Tell me someone else has this thing. I need to know I'm not alone.

Yeah.
The shell elevator is still a little sticky and I think the spring could use replacing, but it's still functional.
There's a few spots on the barrel where the bluing is gone, too.

Iirc you can get it with ghost ring sights, and a bayo will cost yo a lot less than $350
