Sabre
>>33811825
From what era?
Is some kind of special sabre?
>>33811837
Im no expert, but i agree that it's a sabre
Also that one marking looks chinese to me
And the wear on the metal looks like it's 20th century, because it's not a lot of wear
My guess is it's some chinese officer sword, like how the japs would use?
Alternatively the writing COULD be kanji and I'd never know

If by writing you mean the text in OP, its says R B G
The blade looks something like a 1796 light cavalry sabre.

gramps was a fedora tipper

it's not oriental. it's a craftsman's mark. don't recognize it, but it should be easy to find in a library or online. looks like a ceremonial sword. might've been used at formal events by a norwegian NCO or officer? blade is pristine except near scabbard opening, grip is too-nice and looks like it's seen 60 years of dust. it's a wall hanger.

It's a Japanese katana, one of the finest forged blades for thousands of years, mind you. The Japanese have the highest quality steel with the least amount of impurities and it's most likely been folded over 1500+ times. Devastating weapon? You bet. However don't forget that this is a piece of Edo Era Japanese history.
