Mornin', /k/ !
Time for another episode of gun show lemons. In today's episode, I'd like to showcase my Mossberg 395k shotgun. After tinkering around with it for a while I've given up on it and have decided that I need to seek a higher power in order to resolve the issue.
Now, I only paid $100 for the shotgun so I'm not too upset, but there's a problem with it that irks me enough that I just need to get to the bottom of it once and for all.
You see, the problem has to do with the feeding of the shells into the chamber. As you may already know, these bolt action shotguns come with a 2 round assault clip. The problem only occurs with 2-3/4" shells, and only when there are 2 rounds in the magazine.
In this picture here, there are 2 rounds in the magazine. Everything seems to be ok at first, but soon things will go terribly wrong.
Unless you close the action with the force of a thousand suns, the round getting chambered will pop out of position and get caught up on the face of the receiver, as shown in the pic.
Now the peculiar thing is, the last round in the magazine, with no rounds underneath it to push up on it, will feed into the chamber 100% of the time, even if you close the action slowly.
So tell me /k/, what could be wrong with this thing?

Well, what I reckon is that the bolt comes up over the ass-end of the shell in the mag, and it pushes down and tilts both the shell in the mag and the magazine follower. The front end of the shell in the mag pops up and because the extractor isn't a claw-type, it can push the fed shell up enough to cause a misfeed.

So, in layman's terms, what is my shotgun doing wrong compared to a functional bolt action firearm ?

The shell in the magazine is doing a bad thing. If you can't pinpoint why that is, you might want to have a gunsmith look at it.

Just sold mine yesterday. Good riddance.

I have had 2 of those things and my buddy had the Stevens version. They all did that. I think its a common problem.

I've googled it but I've never found any discussions about it, but thank you for that information, I feel a bit better.

>carbon fiber
I FIXED IT YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!
All I had to do was bend the feed lips of the magazine so they were more vertical instead of curled inwards!
Thanks, /k/.
