I am in need of help /k/. While i was cleaning my room, i found my old military helmet i used to play with as a child. I wanted to find out when it was used and in which army. From the look of it, i think its helmet UVH-0004, used by US Paratroopers during Vietnam. I found out that someone signed it under the leather strap - William E Vibbard, and theres number 19482711. Now, that wouldnt be strange if i did not live in Europe. My question is, could it be real thing?

for the record i don't believe you

that's a WWII or Korean War era high pressure helmet LINER
I'm leaning towards Korean era because of the vent hole in the front, but that's not necessarily conclusive
it is not a helmet and will not provide significant protection

however, it does look to be in pretty nice shape and be complete (except for the actual steel shell of course) and painted the correct color
the liner you have is a standard M1 infantry liner, not a paratrooper liner

I'll get you a pic of a Vietnam era liner in just a bit

what you should do OP, is look for and purchase the steel shell
to be correct for what you have there, you should look for a "front seam" helmet shell
the rims on these helmets has a seam in the front and were typically made with stainless steel, which tends to wear and make a nice shiny target around your head
look for the shiny rim wearing through paint and seam in the front
>>
>>33810918
or, if you're not an autistic reenactor like me, just get a rear seam shell and call it good
>>
>>33810864
Will try to get the picture of it, but its on the inside of the leather strap, so i dont know how far i can go with camera without damaging it.

here is a picture comparing a WWII/Korea era (left) M1 liner to a Vietnam era liner (right)
I've removed the leather headbands from both so it's easier to see the differences

notice how the WWII/Korea era liner has a shoelace in the center and an additional nape strap (like yours)
while the Vietnam era liner has no adjustable shoelace and no nape strap
>>
>>33810972
Thanks for help, I had no idea how to properly identify. Now just to look for that steel shell somewhere

There was also this written on leather strap, but i canĀ“t quite read out the words
>>
>>33810986
if you want to do it right, look for the front seam and expect to pay a bit more
I paid $75 for my shell and Vietnam era liner
you might be able to get one for a bit less with no liner

if you don't care about getting it correct for early-mid WWII like I did, a rear seam shell should be considerably less expensive

if you look at my picture, you can see the stainless steel rim peaking through under pain and sorta see the seam at the front of the helmet/top of picture

here are some good resources for research and identification

and I know it's highly unlikely, but relevant to the thread
I whole-heartedly recommend J Murray in Wisconsin for any and all M1 helmet repair or restoration
everyone in my reenacting unit has J Murray restored helmets and he's always treated all of us better than right
responsive, reasonably quick, and good prices
>>

Well, Wisconsin its a little bit way too far from Europe so i dont think its possible. Also, I just have found that there is a little word GIO and logo of shield with T inside.

I figured as much
really just for other anons who may be lurking

that "T" is probably an "F" for Firestone
your liner was manufactured by Firestone tire company
>>
>>33811151
oh, and that means that it definitely is a real WWII produced liner and not a postwar/Korea liner since Firestone stopped making liners in 1945
>>
>>33811039
james something or other
if it is originally mr. vibbard the bronze star recipient of I corps than it is most likely just an infantrymans helmet altough their was/is an airborne ranger regiment attached to I corps
>>
>>33811151
yep, thats definitely that logo. Also, judging by the picture, it means G 10, not GIO.
>>
>>33811164
my guess, James got a little cute and wrote Vibbard on there as some sort of in joke

it is entirely possible that the headband was in Vietnam and was added to the liner sometime after Vietnam by... who knows

the dark OD of the headband points to Vietnam era FOR THE HEADBAND ONLY, but is far from conclusive as production variance during WWII was huge
>>
>>33811189
also the riveting doesn't seem to be original to me as if the smooth ww2 helmet was refitted with a vietnam era liner?
>>
>>33811235
no, no, no
look here >>33810972
Vietnam - no shoelace nor nape strap
WWII - shoelace and nape strap

the headband HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RIVETS
the headband is completely removable
and this is not a helmet, this IS THE LINER
did you even read the thread?
>>
>>33811235
Could it be original WWII liner, somehow refited? Just a wild guess, I have no idea.
The Firestone logo is definitely there, will try to get the picture.
>>
>>33811133
Fuck off and die newfag
>>
>>33811265
the only thing that might be refitted on it is the completely removable headband and it might have been repainted at some point
>>
Well, I will try to look for that front seam shell. I think it will be cool to have original helmet, even if it is just for shit and giggles.
>>
Had a small talk with my friend, and he suggested that the liner may come from the US units which liberated Pilsen in Czech Republic. That could explain how original US helmet ended up in Czech Republic.
>>
>>33810817

Take it close to your ear,if you hear something like she sells sea shells by they sea shore then is from the Pacific War Era.

But if it ain't me starts to play then you hit the jackpot
