I want to play it

Many, many years ago there was a NATO centre in Germany that had a room with a very large sandpit and a viewing gallery. Staff officers from different countries would sit in the gallery, equal numbers playing "red" and "blue" forces. The pit took up the entirety of the room and was about 200 feet square.

They would shout instructions to two men in the box who, in complete silence, would wade around the sand moving red and blue blocks - each block having a different designation and varying in size depending on the rank/role of the officers. Overseeing it all was a Brigadier General (no, really) who would make sure everything ran smoothly. From time to time he would introduce various parameters, such as bad weather or CBRN, and the officers would have to plan accordingly.

As I was just passing through, and not an officer, I was not permitted to sit in the gallery but I was invited to get in the sand. I thought it ridiculous, but clearly someone put a lot of time and effort into it.
