Usually up to discretion of command, but generally any weapon or munition (even if it's only a stock, barrel, etc) is prohibited. You are only allowed to bring back items you were issued.

This does not apply to the civilian market, however, as long as it was legally obtained you can ship most things back. I'd be careful, though, I heard about a sgt who bought his wife a tiger skin coat in Afghanistan, only to find out it was from an endangered species. It was promptly confiscated and he was out of a couple grand.

i was never in the military, so i don't know how much and how thorough they check your bags. i know back in the day they would do what was called a duffle cut. take the rifle out of the stock and cut the stock at the front barrel band. it would then fit in their duffle bag.

i guess if they x-ray or really check your bag you couldn't do it. you would be breaking import laws, but if it wasn't automatic then you wouldn't be breaking NFA i guess?
