There was a giant R&D test and evaluation boondoggle across the 1990s as the G36 got developed. Bringing in plastics expertise from Universities and institutes across Germany, spending money, shooting, and producing a pile of reportage.

Why? Because plastic in a gun melts, and super high tech plastics and SCIENCE is needed. Also shooty guns and government funding.

So it was kind of hilarious, the controversy waded unknowingly into this huge, already existent 20 year old reportage, research and information about the "problem". Everything had been done to death already.

>Even an idiot understands that plastic is very susceptible to warping as a result of temperature changes.

Only an idiot does not understand the difference between a thermoplastic polymer and a thermoset polymer.

A thermoplastic polymer is something that you can use in a standard cheapo 3D printer, like a Reprap or a Makerbot or shit like that. It liquefies / goes >>>PLASTIC<<< in general at higher temperatures, usually around 200 degrees Celsius or more. Types of this plastic would be Nylon (pantyhoses), ABS (toys, kitchen appliances, power tools), PET (plastic bottles) or PLA (3D printing autism).

A thermoset is a polymer that doesn't at all get soft when you heat it and instead starts to burn, char or otherwise totally wreck itself. This generally happens at much higher temperatures than the thermoplastics getting soft. To make these polymers, they are mixed from two or more chemical components, then injected into a mould, then harden out over time, and then forever stay that shape. It's usually glass fiber reinforced, lightweight, injection-moulding-capable, moisture-proof, decay-proof. Examples would be epoxy resins, Bakelite if you wanna go really ancient.

The G36 obviously uses the latter. I know that Wikipedia says that it's made from ABS plastic (at least it did last time I checked), but I dabbed some acetone (aka nail polish remover) onto the stock of mine very own service rifle (which is a chemical that totally fucking liquefies and destroys ABS) and it did jack shit.

So yeah, all that the >melt meme proves is that nobody on /k/ even tries to look into the most basic info on polymers.

Then again I'm just doing conscription service and all the guns we get are basically the bottom of the barrel bullshit guns nobody who goes on an actual deployment would want to touch with a ten foot barge pole.

"Versions" might be too grand a word. The basic frame of the gun is practically always the same unless you've gotten a hold of one of the versions with the shortened barrel and piston; otherwise, all the other parts are so modular you could frankenswap just like the AR-15 platform can.

Before you ask me why, and why that short, you go to the army in order to gather LEGITIMATE reasons for why you'd never want to go to the army. Army life sucks in new and imaginative ways that civilians can practically not ever fathom, because they still have their bare reserves of common sense. Depends on what you want out of it.

Do you want to dick around for a few months on taxpayer money? Go for 7 months. Choose a POG unit, not a combat unit. In both you will be dicking around and not receive the bare minimums to qualify for literally fucking any actual soldier position, but at least in the POG units everyone aims to dick around one way or another so you get a relaxed lyfe and aren't dragged into pointless exercises every week. This is the way to get the closest thing to the old Wehrdienst experience.

Do you want to go out there and kill somebody (or be involved in the general organizational effort of doing so) that, in some vague interpretation, is a threat to Germany? For that you have to sign up for 2 years minimum, SaZ.

One thing I never understood, people say gas piston ar's are better for suppressor, yet HK recently added a gas regulator adjuster(whatever) on the A5. Does that mean previous 416's had problems using suppressor? Also my country's sppecial forces went with the Colt Canada C8 over HK416, mainly because of the heavy barrel the C8 had. Just makes me wonder, is the 416 and the piston stuff really a meme like /k/ keeps saying? The C8 is DI and mostly built like the mk18 mod 0, yet it got picked over a newer and more modern weapon.

>>33816043
Somalia, Afghanistan, Mali. Some others. But they send only a small contingent of soldier enlisted there. What they really are looking for right now is SSGTs (meaning Feldwebels) and above, for instructor roles. The BW loves to get deployed in foreign countries to train staff there to do all the dying for them, and for that they need qualified trainers, and you only get to be a proper trainer in the Feldwebel-careers.

>>33816054
Well you will never ever get any real miitary stuff even if you sign up for 23 months. Conscription on the inside of Germany's borders is not at all like real soldiery. It is all about getting dicked around by the command and the superiors in general, being made to do pointless exercises and never getting that training that you actually wanted.

They erased MG3 training from basic. You only get it in advanced training now. Let that sink in.

Look man, I'm barely at the 4 months mark by now and I already want it to fast forward so it can be over already. I'm not gonna just quit, I want that good checkmark on my record, but jesus. Make life for yourself easier. TRUST me that you will have had enough of "real" military life after the Allgemeine Grundausbildung (basic). During Basic, you will get the closest thing to "real" military life. The main component of this is to be treated like you do not have a brain. In good units, after this is through, you will be treated like a regular person again. If you're like me, and chose PzGren, you will not, and your superiors will still clap you on the back of the head all day like you jsut came out of Sonderschule.

Sure you can, I did. You just become the bottom bitch for everyone except for the other enlisted, who envy you for how fast you'll get outta there again.

huh I was told otherwise
Did not matter to me because I wanted to be medic only
These career advisors do not seem to know their shit

>These career advisors do not seem to know their shit
The career advisors in Germany are special in that they lie to you / don't know well enough about stuff that they wouldn't even need to lie about in order to get you to sign up. They just bullshit all day and supply you with the worst humanly possible information every time.

>>33816138
Well you certainly soured my perception of our military even more. What would be a good unit according to you?

I don't think they are that much different in other countries

Even the US when testing the XM8 said it sucked.

Do something where you aren't expected to get dirty. Supply maybe. Maintenance is also good. Electronic warfare / combat control, I heard those units are maximum nerdy and full of weebs. An artillery unit, possibly. Anything that you can even imagine having to dig a foxhole is right out. No infantry, no light anti-air, and especially NO PIONIER.

If you have a brain, you will want to use the time you get lazing around in the barracks to get yourself some study books for whatever you will want to pursue afterwards (university or whatever) and study during all the "free" time you'll have. Sitting in the barracks solving higher math equations is my idea of university prep.

not this anon
But I will have a Feldwebel career with an included ZAW (Zivile Aus-und Weiterbildung) to become a medic(Notfallsanitäter). 13 years of steady pay and an interesting job that I always wanted to pursue

Norway went with the HK416 and Colt C8 instead.

Thanks for the info, definitely going to think this over.

>tfw you'll never be an operator tactically operating with a gun that melts

nothing

>thermoplastic melts at low temperatures
>thermoset burns/wrecks itself
>much higher temperatures tho
orrrr you could just make it out of metal and not need to worry about your gun melting / wrecking itself at all. Thermosets will still fail catastrophically at sustained operating temperatures, no matter how reinforced it is. If you've ever tried to epoxy something to a firearm, its becomes very apparent that its not designed for such use. With the current state of materials engineering, the G36 is considered very outdated.

>They erased MG3 training from basic. You only get it in advanced training now. Let that sink in.

Oldfag conscript here. It's a shame, really.
Some time ago i heard from a distant aquaintance who happened to be Stuffz that he had to make a "test" on the MG3. He said he learned the whole weekend for that "test"

I don't dare to imagine what the BW has come to. Good luck to you though.
