It's incredibly cool and works very well in its belt fed configuration, but it was too complicated for general military use.

Even though it's one of my favorite weapons, it's pretty much the low-point of Stoner's career- it could have been better engineered. The concept has a lot of potential but Stoner's implementation was overly complicated. Having to modify the trigger to switch between top feed/bottom feed really eliminates a lot of the utility, and better solutions have long since been invented. If the Stoner 63 concept were revived with some more modern wisdom, it would be a lot more successful than it was back in 'nam.

The Mk46 is the modern equivalent of the Stoner 63, lightweight, reliable, optimized. The M249 at the time was a huge breakthrough and the gov't was buying huge numbers of them along with parts and 5.56 with M27 links (as opposed to the relatively obscure links the stoner 63 used). Logistically it was a simpler weapon, although not necessarily mechanically.

Remarkably light for an LMG. The conversion is totally useless though (but there's no harm trying it, we wouldn't know it's useless until we tried). I wish somebody would adopt the Stoner 86/96.

I accept that term for the Stoner 63 since it can change from LMG to assault rifle. The early AR10s might be in the same boat with their belt fed conversions. No other guns though.
