> Operation Eldest Son
> Green Berets and LRRPs find Vietcong ammo caches and replace random bullets with ones that will cause the weapon to explode upon firing

Should have called it 'Operation: Unfortunate, Son' in my opinion

Operation chariot.
The raid on st nazaire.
>Be British command in ww2
>Only one dock on the Atlantic can harbor the Tirpitz
>So heavily defended that it can't be destroyed from the air
>If it is destroyed Tirpitz will have to sail past the British high seas fleet for repairs and will be destroyed in the process
>Come up with a plan to send in 611 men against 5000 in a battleship full of explosives and several smaller wooden ships with exposed fuel tanks and then ram the battleship into the dock, leap off the ships, blow up all the facilities and then attempt and escape, all in time for tea.
>"But Gen. Tommie Godfrey John Bull Bong Smith III, the area leading to the dock is heavily defended by sea as well, how will you sail a FUCKING BATTLESHIP up the river full of commandos and high explosives without blowing up?"
>Decide to paint ship in Nazi camo???
>Go ahead with batshit insane plan.
>Results in dock destroyed, 228 men escaping, 169 killed, and 215 captured.
>89 decorations issued including 5 VC's
>Becomes known as the greatest raid of them all.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Nazaire_Raid

Other mention would be the raid on Entebbe because they literally just flew a fucking plane into an airbase, picked everyone up and left like fucking madmen.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Entebbe

I genuinely believe to be a great tactical level commander you have to be slightly insane.

>pay the French for some missile boats
>French decide to start gargling Arab cock
>no, you can't have your boats
>no, we won't give you your money back
>around the same time, a (((new client))) shows up who wants to use the boats for fishing
>the client sends over skeleton crews who inspect the boats
>crew end up staying on the boats
>they ask permission to turn on the engines and test them because it gets cold in winter and you need the engines on for the heating to work
>meanwhile, other (((businessmen))) start buying all the fuel they can, one jerry can at a time
>BBC film crew shows up to the naval yard to report on the seized Israeli ships, and realizes none of them are there
>Prime Minister is so pissed he orders the French navy to find and sink the boats before they can get to Israel
>defense minister tells him to go fuck himself
>meanwhile, a British aircraft patrols spots the ships booking it east across the Mediterranean
>the British hate the French, so they just send "bon voyage" to the ships in Morse code and then fly off

Glorious. I love how the Israelis just don't give a fuck about international politics and will pull off secret spy/special operations bullshit that no other country would dare to.
>>
>>33794712

Look up the time they flew a special forces squad in a C-130 all the way to africa to blow up like 50 migs that just got delivered and then flew back
>>
>>33794473
> to be a good tactical commander you have to be slightly insane

Indeed, its all about coming up with a plan so barmy the enemy would never expect it, hence why it might just work.
>>
>>33793540

Crazy has to be fought using more crazy. And firepower
>>
>>33794731

You mean the Entebbe Raid? That was actually a hostage rescue mission, the destroyed MiGs were just a bonus objective so they could get the triple-S ranking.
>>
>>33794530
Israel has always had some massive fucking balls when it comes to decisive action.

One of my favorites of theirs is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Opera
Because it's some shit right out of Ace Combat.

Other honorable mention probably second only to Operation Chariot is operation Eland:
84 men vs 5000
>How will we attack the camp?
Just drive up, get out, call everyone out for parade, and then shoot them all?
>But we're white
Lets just black up?
>Results in 4 injuries and no casualties for Rhodesia. They think they killed 300 communists but in actual fact Commies loose 1028 (lowest estimate) to 2000 men in their reports.

THEY LITERALLY BLACKED UP and the communists fell for it How the fuck?

Operation Eagle Claw.

Because HOW DO YOU FUCK THAT UP?! Like holy shit, that was a clusterfuck from finish to start if there ever was one.
>>
Poobah's Party come to mind, only because I have a soft spot for Old Crows.

>Inna Gulf 1, inna Baghdad
> Coalition wrecking everywhere
>Black bombers sneaking in and putting bombs over baghdad
>Can't see 'em, can't shoot 'em, only shoot at them
>Coalition conventional aircraft avoid Baghdad
>boredZSUgunner.jpeg
>Suddenly aircraft reported all over
>Targeting radars flash on all across Baghdad IADS zone, finally time for revenge.

>Its just drones.
>Nearly EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DRONE in the AF and NAVY inventory.
>Laughsparkvark.gif
>Macross missile spam HARMS into every emitting source in central Iraq

Actually pretty sure it was ROKMC that had the Claymores on their chests. There were South Korean SF present, but their presence was hidden until the operation was over.

Ambushes are deadly. Also, from a distance, they would look black. It's really quite clever.

In actual military terms, this is more a campaign than an actual operation, but it's one of those unsung things. They didn't call the US Submariners the 'Silent Service' for nothing. They brought Japan to its knees.

In terms of operations, probably the H3 raid during the Iran/Iraq war.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-3_airstrike

And Operation Pedestal
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Pedestal

Which despite being a tactical loss for the allies was a massive strategic victory.
