Man there's some ugly jets posted here.
>tfw you will never see any more beautiful chrome jets dogfighting
One unforgettable moment from my childhood was seeing the unmistakable silhouette of a B-2 pass low overhead at night (we lived only a few miles away from Offutt AFB) while we were on our way home from the movie theater.
>>33789457
Best Interceptor coming through
The Messerschmitt 109 is absolutely beautiful
>tfw you'll never have a ride as sweet as great granddad
Don't get me wrong, all of these are pure aesthetic but the F-14 has my heart
Nothing holds a candle. There are only 2 other aircraft that can compete: the Sr-71 and the Super Constellation.
>A E S T H E T I C
>>33789215
The B-2 is indeed large, but it's very difficult to determine relative sizes in photos with a perspective like that. Keep that in mind.

>>33790251
Amen. Su-27 best plane bae. B2 is sexy af though.

They fired over 200 missles at F-117s in operation Allied Force. Plus countless AAA shells. It was pretty common to see SAMs screeching up around the F-117s on their bombing runs.
The F-117 targets were not a well kept NATO secret, and they had spotters off the end of the runway at Aviano air base. With the targets, and the takeoff time, they can roughly estimate the time over target.
F-117s are not stealthy when they have their bomb bays open.
Read a book called Stealth Fighter. It's interesting, he talks about flying F-117s and bombing Yugoslavia.

SR71
This may be the single greatest aviation story ever told, it’s about the iconic SR-71 Blackbird whose full operating specs are still classified to this day. The story, from the now out-of-print book Sled Driver by former SR-71 jockey Brian Shul (available used on Amazon for just $700). Here’s the ultimate aviation troll:
Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 4.51.23 PM
There were a lot of things we couldn’t do in an SR-71, but we were the fastest guys on the block and loved reminding our fellow aviators of this fact. People often asked us if, because of this fact, it was fun to fly the jet. Fun would not be the first word I would use to describe flying this plane. Intense, maybe. Even cerebral. But there was one day in our Sled experience when we would have to say that it was pure fun to be the fastest guys out there, at least for a moment.
>>33792031
I love the P-38. Read "The fork tailed Devil", great book
Convair B-58 Hustler. Pure class, also entirely over-engineered in true 1950's spirit.
Handley Page Victor. Most /ae/ of the V-bombers.

Can anyone post some Super Tucano? Plane is beautiful as fwark
>>33792031
I absolutely love this plane
If I ever had a chance to own one I would
It's a shame there are so few left. Hell, all the good WW2 planes are dying off. We might soon see a day without these beautiful birds at airshows.
>>33788528

>>33795344
I wouldn't worry so much.
There was a time when there were non of these and we're up to three or four in the air today.
Spitfires must be up to about one hundred flying examples now.
Lancaster bombers may soon be three with a potential fourth one to join them.

>>33796415
Even this would totally lick its ass.
It's just as well they never encountered fighters from the European Theatre of Operation as they would have been just so much dead meat.
>>33796627
It's also a lot shorter though. And being a flying wing instead of having wings extend from the fuselage makes it look even smaller.
>>33796635
>That's because cowardly Europeans couldn't develop an effective turnfighter so they had to use speed to run away from a fight

>>33795389
Quite the opposite, actually. It was a fantastic airplane.
The plane was very reliable and flew very well.
They lost alot of them due to no fault of the plane. But rather due to circumstances in the war.
>>33797718

More like shot down because of the lack of air cover. And destroyed on the ground.
They outfitted alot of them with gun turrets because there wasn't enough fighter protection. They also had guys pointing mg-34s out the windows.
>>33797145
That jet looks like it's in quite good condition for the NK air force. Is the pilot some politician's son?

>>33800865
"This work led to an interesting discovery. When an engine was optimized specifically for high speed, it burned perhaps twice as much fuel at that speed than when it was running at subsonic speeds. However, the aircraft would be flying as much as four times as fast. Thus its most economical cruise speed, in terms of fuel per mile, was its maximum speed. This was entirely unexpected and implied that there was no point in the dash concept; if the aircraft was able to reach Mach 3, it may as well fly its entire mission at that speed."
I haven't had time to see what documents are available to confirm the Wiki excerpt from above, but there ya go.
>>33800953
It's a basic specific range equation - pic related.
If you want, I can pull out some NASA reports about the XB-70. Unfortunately, it was pretty underwhelming. Even with all the military equipment and half the crew gone and the bomb bay filled with fuel, the XB-70 ended up falling well short of the design range. As cool as it was, it really was a failure.

Well, up until the Hellcat and Corsair were deployed in the Pacific the Zero was definitely the best fighter of the theater, but afterwards it became a flying coffin. American planes were faster, which meant they could engage and disengage at will. The Zero could not outrun a Hellcat and certainly not a Corsair. A competent pilot in a Zero was still a deadly opponent to newer American planes, but the odds were stacked against it.

>>33799556
He could only see it because it wanted to be seen. When it's in stealth mode, the B2 uses light detectors to change its altitude to just the right spot so that it blends in with the hue of the sky.
>>33795044
>Those huge external fuel tanks
Really makes you think about how poorly designed some jets are. They should carry all fuel internally.
>>33799159
yeah, it had such a hard time against hadjis with machine guns. a box kite with missiles and bombs could prove otself in afghanistan and iraq

>>33794405
I think it's way underrated; at its introduction it was pretty revolutionary. I think the reason it goes so unnoticed (at least in my own speculation) is that it's one of those jets that became sort of iconic/ingrained in the mind as the jet that everyone imagines when you tell them to picture a fighter jet, so it becomes ubiquitous and ordinary. At least, that's how I thought of it growing up.
