why does NASA need armed helicopters? Who employs the men flying and manning the machine gun? Are they air force or something?

>>33785320
>dat good boy operator pupper
this was a great purchase by Harper, but we should have got armed escorts as well
>>33785175
Security around launch sites etc.
I'm curious about who actually operates them too, though. I don't recognize the camo on those guys, but it might just be the lighting.
>>33785340
NASA has to get their people and equipment from place to place.
Also what >>33785628 said.
>>33785688
I've seen that one, they have it on display at the museum.
There aren't a lot of angles that were the apache doesn't look hideous

>>33785806
Huh? Wasn't that the Canadian Forces already got a gunship in the form of Griffin?
>>33785871
Yup
>>33785909
holy shit, never seen that before. I know the Griffin was used as fire support and recon in A-stan, but I've only ever seen it armed with M3 or M134 door guns.
>>33785913

Whoa, the Vietnam night fell like a net
I am an airborne vet
Another Charlie with a shot to the head
My M60 glowing red
Chopper, chopper, give me the news
I've got no ammo and I'm needin' you
More VC than I can kill
I've got men down and I'm needin' you

Shootin' gooks all straight through the heart
Learned it drops 'em fast right from the start
"Incoming" I hear my buddy cry
M2 mortars falling from the sky
Chopper, chopper, gimme the news
We hear you, but you're out of view
Sudden rockets and a shower of lead
Cobra pilot, makin' Charlie stew
Well our artillery ain't gonna stop
Sergeant hands me smoke that I've got to pop
Stand in in a field, marking location
The call goes out for evacuation
Napalm lights up an acre of wood
It gets me hard, it gives me wood
VC burnin', like they should
Chopper, chopper, gimme the news
I see you screaming down, out of the blue
R&R is gonna do me well
Chopper pilot I owe a beer to you.
>>33785175
The helos and armed security are for the ever present threat of Ayyliums trying to stop us Homo sapiens from getting shit into orbit, basically IRL XCOM
>>33785832
Looks like 5.11 Tactical's old proprietary digital camo they used to sell in the Bush years. It was moderately popular with contractors, and I'm pretty sure NASA security are contractors just like nuclear security.
>>33785257
Is this something that is actually done? For what purpose?
>>33786923

Are we ever going to get a new attack helicopter?
You know shit is bad when the cops need an armored Huey for favela operations.
>>33790362
Rio de Janeiro's police.
>>33790370
>>33790374
Another Rio's police chopper.
Funny story about this: they were coming back from training, when they saw some tourists getting mugged by the beach. So they land on the fucking beach (was empty), give chase on foot, and arrest the muggers. Fucking surreal.
>>33786799
The latest and greatest is even bigger. At least internally. Room enough to carry a humvee inside.
>>33791243
>>33786799
I don't get it. Why not replacing them with Osprey? The MV-22 got bigger load and longer range compared to Stallion/King Stallion. Plus, it was more compact to store within ship's hangar.
>>33791851
For example. This. The Stallion got middle range between Sea Knight and Osprey.

Grand Rapids fag here, for to see that helicopter in the Ford museum here in the city. It was really neat. They've got the stairs there too.

>>33785175
You'd be surprised at how bad a motivated 'lone wolf" terrorist can really screw up a shuttle launch.
Launch platforms use a whole hell of a lot of liquid oxygen fuel, and LOX's combustibility makes gasoline look like water.
There's lots of other, likely better reasons why you don't want unauthorized access to a launch site that I can't think of.
