As an E-4 I would have E-8's coming to me for medical advice, have officers nod and call me "doc", and would act as a pseudo-therapist for lower enlisted. I never got fucked with or put on bullshit details. Being a respected medic is one of the best ways to avoid the misery of being lower enlisted.

Awful because you are expected to literally to know every system ADA uses, ADSI, AMDWS, TAIS, FAAD, CPOF, know everything about the commo world, do SHORAD, HIMAD, CRAM, or THAAD missions, drive Shelters and Avengers, operate Sentinel radars, help Tangos load Patriot, help Papas do CRAM maintenance, run ADAM cells, be battlestaff in ABMOCs, coordinate with the Air Force in ADAFCO sections. Too many damn hats that you can suddenly find yourself wearing without ever have receiving any training whatsoever with SMEs in that job that can even train you in the operation few and far between. The only saving grace is that it is ridiculously easy to go warrant and make CW4/5 if you have any of that knowledge because there are so few of us.

I worked in an office which recruited twins. One scored 50 on the ASVAB. This one ended up taking a job as an interrogator. The other tested something like 4 times; 3 for the Marines until they gave up, then he came to the Army door. We sent him to a special tester. He got a passing score and joined on the last day of the recruiting year as ye olde 11B. They had similar line scores, which means they would have qualified for similar jobs. I think he just didn't do well at math and English.

This is not a general experience of everyone in the military. I've eaten in DFACs that were entirely Army run (no contractors) and the food was literally garbage (food items that had spoiled and covered in mold being served to troops).

I've eaten in DFACs while in Iraq staffed by contractors and the food was great.

Which was a weird experience for me because I grew up eating what was essentially Vietnam era Army cooking (my paternal grandfather ended up as a mess NCO before separating around 75 about a year shy of 20, originally enlisted in 44 with breaks in service between WWII, Korea, and Vietnam). Every Sunday we would go to my grandparents house and my grandfather would have turned their kitchen into a chow hall.

So it was a shock to me that other than breakfast Army run DFACs could have such a wide range of quality.

You don't pack chutes all day. Its a pretty cush job. One of my friends was a rigger it was rare that he didnt knock off a bit early. He was also good at landing those guys jump so much they can land fairly softly using chute oscillations. He never went to the field and only a few of them deployed. Not really. The facities that you can work at with a mitary CTO are small airports controlled by private atc companies and don't pay well. The other facilities you have to go through the faa academy. So all you really get is a 5 to 10 pt bonus added to your test for your military service. You also have to be under 31 to go to the faa academy. Also the lucrative career you hear about is only the controllers that work in big cities with a high cost of living allowance. In middle America the salary is ok at best.

I'm thinking about joining the Air National Guard for 3D0X3, 3D0X2, or something similar. Even better would be 1B4X1, but it sounds like cyber defense is reserved for career people or people who reenlist. Also considering 35Q in the Army National Guard, but again it sounds like you can't join as a 35Q straight away.

Back when I was in (blackhawk crewchief in 101AVN) we would do paradrops with 5th group guys every other week for a few hours. Those guys would easily get in a solid 6-7 jumps a day, so the 15 a month isn't unbelievable, mos-dependent.
