I picked this up at the flea market today for $260. It is all matching including the dust cover and has an airplane sight. I know nothing about these things but jumped at it just based on a wild guess. My only real concern is the shineyness of the stock. However, I THINK this is early war because of the steel stock so maybe they had time back then to include lacquer on the stock. How bad did I get jewed?

sounds like a great deal, /k/omrade

/k/ool. Arisakas up in Canada usually go for $4-500ish
>>
>>33769369

You did good anon, I picked up one in similar condition last year for 250 with all the goodies.I'd say yours is probably worth around 400, maybe 500 if you have the intact mum.

Here's the one I got for $250. It's in superb condition and the bayonet has a bullet hole through the blade. The guy who sold it to me didn't know what he had.
>>
>>33769497

Thanks anon. I appreciate the info. Any idea on the shinier stock? Is that something that would be original? Also, is the dust cover matching not a rarity?
>>
>>33769547

I think its slightly rare-er as soldiers would chuck them away cause they rattled

maybe yours was just never issued
>>
>>33769567
I would doubt that as it is pretty beat up. It could have been used by an administrative jap or something compared to a front line jap.
>>
>>33769579
well.. not beat up but does have a few dings and knocks
>>
>>33769547

It looks like your stock might be refinished, which is okay, it looks good and doesn't diminish the value very much. I'd be more concerned about getting a cleaning rod and a bayonet for it. Is the mum intact on the top of the receiver?
>>
>>33769623

No it is not sadly.

I am not sure how common they are but there is no import mark on the rifle from what I can tell. I can tell from some rubbing on the stock that at one point there was a monopod on it .
>>
>>33769639

You still did good. just because it doesn't have the mum doesn't make it worthless
>>
>>33769696

Thanks, I am pretty happy with it thus far. I probably will never shoot it. But it is just another addition to the collection.
>>
>>33769713
You're missing out. If the bore and action are good, Arisakas are very nice shooting rifles

That's a "no series" made by Nagoya Arsenal. And again, the dust cover is on wrong. The groove for the right side is under the woodline.
>>33769911
That's a 31st series made by Toyo Kogyo under contract from Kokura Arsenal. A little fun fact about Toyo Kogyo is that in the 1980s they changed their company name to the brand name of their cars: Mazda.

Yours would have been made with a monopod. In my opinion the Japanese were scrapping those parts on the rifles very late in the war, but in my opinion they would have at least removed the dust cover too. Maybe they didn't get that far, or more likely someone removed it here in the US to sell separately. That was common 30-40 years ago.

>>33769922
Yes, you read someone's dumb opinion that is reposted constantly. It's kinda like the Garand ping myth. A little rattle means nothing in combat compared with gunfire and explosions.
>>
>>33769975
Not really a captured rifle if its missing the mum. This was sometime after surrender and they were being disarmed.

>>33769997
That's an assumption that isn't always true. A rifle picked up after the surrender can have an intact 'mum' just as easily as a rifle captured from a pile in combat could have had the 'mum' defaced. Some GIs reported that some were making them remove them too. A few said they had their lockers broken into and the mums defaced on their rifles. One even said they had 5 rifles, then when they returned it was only 4. 'Payment' for the 'trouble.'
>>
>>33769993
Very informative video, and Thanks for the information.

Id like to bother you with a few more questions since I am clearly talking to an expert. Any idea on build date?

What type of sling, monopod, and cleaning rod would be historically correct with this model rifle. I need to start gathering the parts to get it back to how it was.

>>33769997

Yeah I wish it still had the mum, but I can appreciate the history of it missing regardless. Just like I appreciate the Russian Capture K98's.

>Any idea on build date?
Late 42, early 43.
I would just suggest you keep it as it sits now. Every manufacturer put their own marks on their monopods. Finding the right one would be a pain, and in the end you'll be taking one from another rifle. I've heard the repros can be finicky too. Same goes for the cleaning rods.
As for the slings, they're usually rubberized canvas like mine. They're all rock hard at this point and falling apart. You pretty much can't take them off of the rifle without them falling into pieces.
>>
>>33770069

Well damn. Id still like to get it back to original style.

I may just snag reproduction parts for all 3 and just remove them when I sell them or make it clear that they are reproductions.

>>33770029
Yes, the the order to speicifally deface the mum happened during/after surrender though. A few guys definitely got fucked and the rifle could be a capture that was unfortune enough to not get home until after surrender. It would be rather rare for one to make it back post surrender and not get ground off, they were doing it stateside also as they returned.

I guess in theory they could of been damn good at hiding them, or maybe just mailed it from the first friendly post office they could find and make it through.

Just being a no series rifle with a ground mum would be a good indicator it was surrendered rather than brought home during the early stages of the war.

>>33770030
Mums are always nice. once you get one it usually becomes less important to have one though. Cool story to it either way.

I have several rifles that were clearly surrendered, yet didn't have their 'mums' defaced. They only cared for a little while and they were still finding rifles into 1946.

$200-350 tops

they arent really that valuable, sorry. looks like a really nice example
>>
>>33770183
Would my rifle have had the long or the short cleaning rod? I am sorry to bother you with this sort of stuff, but I have never in my life done any research and once I get it back to original shape I will prolly never be back into Arisakas unless I snag a sweet deal.
>>
>>33770234
Probably the long. Check the bottom of the stock near the muzzle. If its a square push button you need long, if its just a round metal disc you need the short screw in.

Being a no series i would 99% bet on it being long though.

Not bad, unless you consider the cost of the ammo In which case prelube and await insertion.
>>
>>33770234
It would have the long kind. I usually suggest you just try to find one with all of the original parts intact. They aren't THAT rare. They are a little pricey though. You won't get any money out of repro and non-matching parts.
>>
>>33770286
I only plan to grab a couple rounds max just so I don't own a paper weight.

>>33770316

I wasn't really on the hunt for a pristine example but considering the only thing missing is the monopod and cleaning rod I am not upset. Original cleaning rods are marked correct?

I've had mine for three years and never fired it. The reason being it took me three gun stores and a gunshow to find one box of Norma brand softpoints at $43 for 20 rounds(bought them btw). I really need to buy the dies and brass off grafs.

>Original cleaning rods are marked correct?
They would have the series and maybe inspector's mark from the arsenal they came from. Forget trying to find for this particular rifle, theres too many variables and most sellers won't be assed to look for a small kanji marking.
>>
Sounds like there are Arisaka experts in this thread so I'll ask a question. I was fucking with my T99 a month ago and now the bolt is stuck. I think the firing pin lug is in the wrong position and most guides I've seen suggest removing the bolt stop block but the screw is totally stripped out from the rifle's previous owner and the tension is so high that the screw simply will not move. How can I get my firing pin back to normal position so I can go shoot her again?

I have an Arisaka at my house, the story goes:
>Great grandpa finds pile of surrendered rifles
>snags one as trophy
Only thing is, it has tally marks on it, like a kill count. Except the tallies are English and my Great Grandpa was a bomber Pilot, not an infantryman. Any chance that he found an American captured rifle in the surrender pile?
>>
>>33770349
They all had their own inspection marks.
>>33770396
My local Cabela's usually seems to always have Grafs in stock.
>>33770433
>series
They didn't use the series as an inspection mark. The series marks goes only on the receiver.
>>
>>33770556
Show supposed tally marks. It's unlikely that's what it is. Unless grandpa was deer hunting with it after the war.
>>
>>33770508
110% sure. Safety won't twist at all either.
>>
>>33770571
>They didn't use the series as an inspection mark. The series marks goes only on the receiver.
This is false. Every component on the rifle has a series mark. Check the bolt, its usually on the root.
The stock will have on under the pistol grip
>>
>>33770647
Try pulling the safety back instead of pushing it in. the spring might of broke. Its fairly impossible to have the firing pin lug to not be in the down position. The only thing preventing the bolt from turning would be that safety.
>>
>>33770448
Can you take the safety off? To remove that screw you would need to soak it in some penetrating oil The reason it's stripped out is because the screw is staked in place and someone used a shitty screwdriver.

>>

I'm not. When i get home in the next day or so ill post mine in the msg thread. I have two Arisakas with clear series marks next to the inspector mark and they both match the receiver marks. Except my mazda 35th series, they used the arsenal mark and inspection stamp.
