what is /k/s thoughts on a Lee Enfield as a first rifle?

also in Canada if that makes a difference
>>
>>33766447

better than some faggot-ass nugget.
>>
Can't go wrong with a classic, anon.
>>
>>33766447
Gud guns, may be expensive to feed.
>>
I've been wanting to get an Enfield. Is the ammo a cheap/decent price point? Is the rifle pretty easy to locate here in the States?
>>
Lots of variants, lots of variations in quality, lots of variations in accuracy. No1s are anywhere from like 2-8 MOA.

I had a pair of enfields and I really enjoyed them. Ammo will be expensive, but it's still fun. People will chime in and talk about teaching you to flinch because they do have a moderate kick. I think a .22lr rifle would be a more logical choice, but an Enfield isn't a bad gun. Just do a lot of research and know what you're getting into.
I'd recommend a no4
>>
>>33766494
The No. 1 Mk. 3 that is I think the Mk. 4 is more expensive.
>>
>>33766494
Surplus used to be cheap but is gone now. Expect to pay $14 a box online and $20 at your LGS. Sometimes greek surplus pops up, it is decent ammo and you should buy it.

They are all over gunbroker.
>>
>>33766500
the No. 4 not Mk. 4
>>
>>33766494

it's about a buck a round from PPU

not the cheapest but if you have a decent job it isn't going to kill you.

>>33766447

it's a great rifle honestly. even for a beginner since it's heavy so the felt recoil isn't as bad.
>>
Lee Enfield's are a staple gun for Canadians.

However .303 is expensive so if you plan on doing lots of shooting it's not such a good choice. If you want a gun just to fuck around with, an SKS or just a .22 is probably better for you.

You should still get one though,

hey guys seeing as this is an Enfield thread, i recently came into a huge box of ammo including a fuckload of .303 British that i will never use seeing as i dont have an enfield. if anyone is interested in purchasing it, I'd be willing to go a little bit lower than retail and will give more info if interest is shown
>>
>>33766796
I'd be interested, anon
>>
>>33766494
Most guys here are right, you're looking at about a buck a round. You might find some surplus for a little cheaper but overall it's a great round and loads of fun to shoot.
>>
>>33766815
140 rounds (7 boxes of 20) .303 British from two different manufacturers. Neither box has a brand name on it but 100 of the rounds read "S&B .303 BRITISH" on the rim while the remaining 40 read ".303 MEN-83-2" i was told that most of the ammo i received was milsurp. Box also includes some 6.5 Swede, 7.62x39, and 7.62x25
>>
>>33766952
same guy here, turns out the "MEN-83-2" are german made and the "S&B" is Sellier and Bellot brand
>>
>>33766494

Might want to learn how to reload to cut down on ammo costs.

They're great, just spend time learning about them before you buy, read up and research how to judge thier condition and to recognise a little of their history so you know what you're buying. You want to know what to look for before buying any rifle but with milsurp it's 10x as important.
>>
>>33767054
this also head space the thing, enfield bolt heads some times came in different sizes and you dont want to take a risk
>>
Can't you get an SKS for like a looney and 2 timbits in up there?
>>
>>33767525
The headspace meme needs to be properly understood before you start worrying about it though.

I got one as my first rifle. I love my No 4, but I would recommend it only if you're interested in the history. If you just want a gun for blasting, there are cheaper options with more available ammo. Don't expect a sub-MOA rifle, either. Enfields were designed to be reliable and fast - hence the rear locking. Unfortunately, rear locking is not conducive to accuracy in the same way as front locking. If you want to get one anyway (they are nice rifles), do your research. Probably the most important thing is to get a matching bolt. Headspacing can be an issue for Enfields, and a matching bolt cuts down the risk significantly.

>>33766494
Ammo is around 75cpr for PPU. There is (or was) cheaper Wolf .303, but it sucks dick, so don't get it. I fired three rounds, got major sticky bolt on all three and a keyhole on one, so I gave it away to a certain Hutt gangster. If you're serious about shooting, you might want to get into reloading. My rounds cost around 35cpr, all told.
>>
I love mine
>>
>>33766447
Get an SKS my fellow Canuckistani. If you can get one for less than $270 you're in good shape. Ammo for them is still relatively cheap. Enfields are great but they are expensive to feed. If your dead set on a Lee Enfield and don't want to spend a lot get a nice sporter.

>>

my first rifle was a smle sporter i got for $200. food for it is expensive but it's fun to shoot.
>>
>>33767572
yep
>>
>>33766447

I wouldn't go near one without checking the headspace. Most milsurps have been shot out over the years.
>>
>>33767860
no but if youre interested i'd be willing to ship
>>
>>33768484
>Most milsurps have been shot out over the years.

Wrong.
>>
Canada fag here

my first was a No 4 Mk1* sporter that I got off CGN for $150 shipped

ammo is like $1/round tho
>>
>>33766447
It depends, do you have any shooting training?
It will beat you up if you don't have any training, but its a very good gun, if you do get it check the lock up, the condition of the bolt face and the bore, and ask if its been shot with Mk8 ammo at any point, if it has, refuse to buy it unless you can all the components when the rifles dissembled

I don't know what ammo price is like in Canada, but in bong land I get mine for around 55p per round, not bad but there are cheaper options out there
>>
>>33770458
*you can inspect all the components
>>
>>33766447
You don't need a gun to catch maple syrup.

SGAmmo had 180gr FMJBT .303 Brit rounds for about 50-60 cents a round a few months back.
>>
>>33766447

8.5/10 choice. They're nice as general use rifles and they have history behind them, ammunition may be problematic to procure though.
>>
1944 Lithgow SMLE as a first here.

Fun to shoot, fun to look at, even more fun to own several. Not the most fun buying ammo in the states, I would think it might be a little better in Canada. Don't buy Israeli .303, it's greasy and sometimes overloaded.

I would hazard against an Ishapore and under no circumstances buy a Khyber Pass, son. Learn to decipher whatever markings are on it so you don't get burned by some shady piece of shit selling you a gun made out of old railroad ties.

Hard to go wrong with a good one. I think you'll do alright.
>>
>>33766447
/k/ will have you believe theyre the best thing since sliced bread. The truth is that theyre generally worse at every realistic scenario than a new production rifle for the same money. But i own two because theyre sexy and i enjoy milsurp.
>>
I don't have a proper Enfield but I bought an Ishapore so ammo isn't a problem. It's surprisingly accurate and recoil is practically nothing. Would buy another if I find one
>>
>>33767525
>>33767747
Lee Enfields headspace on the rim, not the shoulder
>>
Where do you guys get 7.62x54r? I would buy PPU online but the shipping costs just as much as the ammo, and the ammo ain't cheap.
>>
>>33767766
actually the accuracy requirement for the No. 4 was very tight. like 2 moa or less
>>
>>33768484
Lee Enfields headspace on the rim you dingus.
>>
>>33771100
>The truth is that theyre generally worse at every realistic scenario than a new production rifle for the same money.

thats not why people buy milsurp so its a non issue

It was my first rifle, 303 british can be pretty cheap, and they are pretty simple to work with.
that being said, make sure you check the headspacing first before you get one.
aside from that, they will take down any standard game animal in the US, even upstanding urban youth whose workplace happens to be in your house in the middle of hte night, so they make a great choice for a first gun
>>
>>33771774
Thats not what /k/ will tell you if youre buying a mosin or a carcano or an sks or any milsurp most people dont have a hardon for. For a first gun, most milsurp rifles are fine. Theyre just not optimal.
>>
>>33771746
If your buying ammo anywhere online you're going to get fucked by shipping price. There's no way around it
>>
>>33771746
If you buy online you should buy in bulk or youre not really saving much money.
>>
>>33772044
the lowest price 7.62x54R has now surpassed 303 british, and is almost twice the price of the lowest 308

54r has been more expensive than steel .308 for a while now. None of that is related to what i said, however

In Cuckanada we are limited to 5 rounds in centerfire semi-autos, so existing standard capacity magazines have a rivet placed in them to comply with the law. Of course anyone with a drill and 5 minutes can remove the rivet which is illegal and can land you up to 10 years in prison. The RCMP firearms regime is much like the ATF and regulates firearm policy.
>>
>>33772112
In Canada, magazines are pinned to only hold 5-10 rounds. This shows how to remove the pin which is why the mounted is screetching like an autosmo
>>
>>33769924
Nevermind then, shipping ammo into Cuckcanada is a pain in the ass.
>>
>>33770398
If you reload you can get that down to 60 cents a round Canadian
>>
>>33766447
Besides all the good things said by all involved you can use it to hunt any major large game in Canada. Moose, deer, Black Bear.

Most? No, unless you consider well used to be shot out. I haven't seen many at all that are legit shot out and should be retired. And there are still really fresh ones too.
>>
>>33766447
Lithgow best
Ishapore worst
>>
>>33766447
i'd suggest getting something cheaper to feed like an SKS or nugget if it's your first gun

if you're rich though may as well go with the enfield
