Lots of people curse Halsey for taking a gigantic bait.

In hindsight its real easy to blame him for that and not understand his rational. He probably wanted to completely destroy Japanese naval air capability in its entirely. The carriers probably were too important to pass up.

Though to be fair, the americans had 400 aircraft, and we all know aircraft wrecked japanese surface ships.
>>
>>33766876
Sure, unless you also realize that either Halsey or US naval intelligence completely missed the part where Japanese Naval Aviation was already completely crippled, even before the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot, and certainly afterward (Battle off Samar was 4 months later).

They literally had nothing to put on those carriers, which is why they were used for bait. By that point in the war they were essentially useless. Almost all of their highly trained and combat experienced pilots were dead (without passing on their training and experience to the new pilots), their newbies were hopelessly outclassed against American training and experience, they didn't have enough aircraft to even load up those carriers and if they did they were generally inferior to the US aircraft they would be facing, though some IJA land based fighters like the N1K1-J and Ki-84 were worthy.

Halsey was chasing a completely worthless target at that point.

>>33766942
Those were not naval strike aircraft. They were for ground support. There were very, very few torpedo bombers and almost no AP bombs. The pilots were literally firing their pistols out of their canopies at the ships and doing dry strafing runs to confuse them, hoping they wouldn't notice they didn't actually have proper munitions.
>>
>>33766990
I think a lot of Taffy 4's planes were armed with depth charges.
I've heard about pilots firing their pistols as well, but would love a proper source. Something that badass needs to be documented.
>>
>>33767008
Oops. Taffy 3's plane.
>>
>>33767048
The aircraft were actually from all the Taffy groups, especially as most of Taffy 3's flat tops were unable to conduct flight operations under direct fire for much of the engagement.

The siege of Munster. For those unaware, shortly after Martin Luther's bullshit translating and distributing the bible, a sect of extremists, the anabaptists came to power in Munster. They were led by a false prophet who pretty much said he was talking to god (some people now think it was hallucinations from ergot poisoning), anyways, they decided to overthrow the goverment because it was god's word lmao. And several other local towns joined together, and led by Franz von Waldeck; laid siege to Munster to cut off their supplies and starve them out.

ANYWAYSSSS, the mistake came in this siege. Instead of breaching the city walls, they opted to wait outside the city. It caused the rebels to keep control of Munster for about a year. Meanwhile at the beginning of the siege, there was a change in leaders/prophets inside the city, and many became dissolutioned. The besieging forces would have been able to breach and put down the rebellion with minimal casualties.

Lastly, when they did eventually capture the city, 2 of the 3 leaders tortured and executed were working for several months to end the rebellion. Pretty big fuck up by Waldeck, as it led to tensons in Munster for like 2 generations.

The battle of Berkeley. It shows that the forces of anarchism are incapable of doing more than rioting and are incapable of fending off the American and kekistani forces they worked to agitate. Dien Bien Phu often get hailed as the biggest french fuckup during the Indochina war, but it was a long list of minor mistakes, bouts of overconfidence and failures to exploit the situation that made it a disaster.
The Evacuation of the RC4, however...

French forces held a line of cities, forts and outposts on the northern Vietnam frontier, that they used to launch counteroffensives from, and disrupt the flow of men and materiel from China. They were linked by a road called the RC4.
Of course, the jungle were teeming with viet-minh, and convoys were often attacked and even wiped out.
Wat do?
High-command decided to evacuate everyone (including 3000 civilians with children and elderlies, because the communists weren't especially kind to). It was a bad idea (as everyone, including most generals present, told them), it was awfully planned (let's send a relief column to meet them midway), it was poorly executed. As it appeared quickly that staying on the road was a death sentence because of ambushes and heavy artillery fire, so it became a forced marche through the jungle (with costly counterattacks and delaying maneuvers), then a complete rout.
The numbers speak for themselves. Two hundred survivors after three weeks of fighting, out of 8000 soldiers. That's not a typo. There are no numbers for the civilians, but I doubt any survived.
97,5% casualty rate, complete loss of an entire region of primary strategical importance, morale and confidence in high-command completely wrecked.

Ach, kinda wrong. See, the training of the Italian pilots was subpar for Great Power standards (tactics were obsolete and there was a huge focus on aggressiveness and , roughly translating, "nice flying"). Compared to Balkanites, Frenchmen or Spaniards the Italians weren't bad pilots per se. Compared to the early war Soviets, even competent.

But the planes. And now you'll tell me the DESIGNS WERE GOOD etc etc. Matters little. Designs were underarmed and more importantly, the Italian Air industry was a golden example of fascist mismanagement, as it kept producing a shitton of new designs (just check the number of prototype medium bombers) to satisfy internal corruption without optimizing quality (as Western powers did) or numbers (as the Soviets did). So you got a lot of manhours-heavy designs that were built in few numbers and no chance to build an industry strong enough to replace losses. Older designs were kept into production because there wasn't anything else and to mantain status quo with government contracts.

To correct ye, it turns out that Italian pilots were fine, so long as they got planes to fight with. They didn't, thanks to Fascist industrial mismanagement.

Yes. Fascism didn't help. Don't misunderstand me, political propaganda matters little.

The point is, reality. Let's make a counterexample: Soviet Russia was a poor country, like Italy was, but the government, despite being a brutal bunch of paranoid fucks, managed to hold the line and optimize industrial production. Italy, when forced to fight to the death in 1943, collapsed.

Fascism was economically and logistically a mess. It had 20 years to shape a State and it managed to build a system that thrived on nepotism and corruption, where Mussolini himself had very little power in some essential matters (it's a running joke that a industrialist could bring Mussolini to his knees with the threat of layoffs, as Benito could not afford bad publicity). It failed on the industrial sense, equipping badly its soldiers with outdated weapons: it failed logistically, mismanaging wars and building up useless units like the MVSN, it failed strategically (everything bar Somaliland).

Even worse, it failed at doing what it promised to do: build a new Italy. Fascist Italy was the old inefficient Italy, just worse but utterly delusional in its beliefs. Again, compare to the Soviets: a murderous regime that won a war on the blood of its people.

And on the matter of the performance of the individual soldier, you'd be surprised: at platoon level, the common Italian fighting man managed to endure some horrendous crap while being shat on by its own leadership and the "Dear German Ally". After all, you'd need some guts to drive a CV-33.

>the romans did alright
that's because modern italians aren't roman or greek.

The romans and greeks were both fair-haired and fair-skinned, nothing like italians.
http://www.unz.com/article/what-race-were-the-greeks-and-romans/

After the fall of Rome, the Byzantine empire which pretended to be the continuation of Rome moved its capital to constantinople (Istanbul in Turkey) and the "roman empire" became a middle eastern empire.

Over the next thousand years, Italy was invaded by byzantine muzzies from middle east and from different emirates in africa.

The island of Malta's christian population is exterminated and it becomes entirely muzzy and Sicily becomes conquered for 98+ years it spends as the Emirate of Sicily (From 965 until 1061)

Different muzzy fleets rule the mediterranean completely for hundreds of years (no control of any italian borders and waters = no continuation of Rome being anything at all)

Until the Norman invasions of southern italy (11th and 12th centuries), Bari and southeast Italy was another towel stronghold.

Until [Normans], Bari continued to be governed by the Byzantines, with only occasional interruption. Throughout this period, and indeed throughout the Middle Ages, Bari served as one of the major slave depots of the Mediterranean, providing a central location for the trade in Slavic slaves. The slaves were mostly captured by Venice from Dalmatia, the Holy Roman Empire from what is now Prussia and Poland, and the Byzantines from elsewhere in the Balkans, and were destined for other parts of the Byzantine Empire and the Muslim states surrounding the Mediterranean: the Abbasid Caliphate, the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba, the Emirate of Sicily, and the Fatimid Caliphate (which relied on Slavs purchased at the Bari market for its legions of Sakalaba Mamluks).

For 20 years, Bari was the centre of the Emirate of Bari; the city was captured by its first emirs Kalfun in 847"

Romans were sold as slaves and muzzies replaced them.

Okay we all know of the russian fuckup in their naval expedition towards Japan, but that can be explained by them not being a proper maritime power.

But lets look at the mighty Battle of the Solent, the largest naval battle between the French and Anglos in the 16th century

>Anglos take the city of Bolougne while the French were busy fighting Spain
>France tries first a normal siege, but its too expensive, to its decided to mobilize some 200 ships for a naval blockade (which of course is like a hundred times more expensive)
>almost immediately end the naval blockade and opt instead for dicking around in the Channel, because why not
>finally got news that the whole anglo fleet is coming, the french admiral in charge hurries from Paris to his fleet
>partying on his arrival and accidentally burn down his own flagship
>switch to the second flagship, which runs aground when the fleet starts to move
>well, that was awkward, but lets have finally that colossal naval battle we all were looking forward to
>its a calm day, so the fleets cant actually move
>finally there is a breeze, but the anglo crew on their own flagship forgot to close the lower gunports after firing, so when their ship heeled over in the breeze it took on water and sank.
>Anglos are so embarrassed that they stop the battle and sail away
>French fleet doesnt really have any idea what to do, sails around a bit, then returns home as well
>England gave Bolougne back a couple of months later, because they dont really wanted it in the first place
>everyone agreed to never speak about that campaign ever again

Yep, it's a theory. But Fascism, despite being in theory a government bound to improve such matters (less gerontocracy, dynamism, development and research) failed and even made things worse. Italian industrial production, if the tables I looked at were right, was comparatively worse in WW2 than in WW1.

Again, Russia always had problems with quality control, shit logistics and autocrats: but the skills and the kind of governments can make or break a nation. Fascism worsened the inbuilt problems of Italy, betraying its promise to improve it. I call it a failure of a system.

Literal flat what. ALTERNATIVE MEDIA SELECTION LOL

See, race and ancient history are quite a problem: one of my favourite trick questions was "Define a Roman". In what sense? legal? When? In 330 AD everyone inside the Empire was Roman. You mean Republican times? Sure, half of the city was composed by migrants and even the higher classes were expats from half of Italy. Being "Roman" was a far more cultural affair than we, bound to the notion of nation=blood, can easily understand. Calling the Rhomaioi "Eastern" is quite offensive, as they were the natural continuation of the Late Roman Empire: Christian.

Wait a sec

My grandfather was a gun commander on the Gambier Bay that day, other fucking hilarious matters of note:

>Fucking Destroyer ESCORT Samuel B Roberts got so close to a Japanese cruiser that she couldn't depress her guns enough to shoot back. Roberts fired her ENTIRE arsenal of 5" guns. Literally every shell; AP, HE, flare, AA, Etc. The last shell that was fired cooked off in the barrel of the fantail gun it was so hot. Both guns were literally orange hot. The sailor that fired the shot earned the Silver Star.

>Gambier Bay was the only carrier in US History to be sunk by surface gunfire, but it took hours to do so, because the Japanese were exclusively firing AP ammunition at it, which passed through its unarmored decks harmlessly.

>USS White Plains almost sunk a japanese cruiser by its self when its lone 5" gun on the fantail made a 1/1,000,000 shot and hit the deck torpedoes of the cruiser Chokai, destroying her engines.

>The three Fletchers of the fleet fucking charged the Japanese center force and dropped as many torpedoes as they could, eventually closing to within 5,000 yards in some cases to fucking rek the superstructures of any ship they could find.

Bill Halsey is a cuck bitch who took his battleships with him for NO reason, and yet in spite of those odds and his tantrums and delays (Upon hearing about the attack he locked himself in his room for an hour, then delayed 2 hours to refuel his destroyers, American seamanship won the day.
>>
>>33766990
What gets me is that Halsey completely ignored common sense with the rest of that engagement.

He delayed at least 3 hours once he learned of Taffy 3's fate. He hid in his ready room for 45 minutes upon hearing the news, and then delayed further to refuel his destroyers--which would have been useless in a surface engagement with Japanese battleships anyway.

Furthermore, he never should have taken his battleships anyway. He had six battleships with him, and while I can't find their identities, I know at least two of them were Iowas.

Halsey was in over his head and scared in my opinion.

Furthermore, his rescue efforts left men floating in life nets and boats for 2 additional days longer than needed, because a US Navy Admiral couldn't figure out how tides worked.

This is probably the biggest example where even at the time of the battle, those organizing it should have realized it was never going to work.
Even if the landings somehow succeeded what would be accomplished? A foothold where you still have to march and fight your way to Constantinople, to what? Possibly knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war?
You still have Austria-Hungary, Germany, and others to worry about then.

It's pretty easily explained. An Iti fighter could take months to build and still leave the factory half finished because the technicians took 5 hour lunch breaks. Meanwhile, the hyper efficient German worker would have all their food expertly packaged and precut, to be consumed within half of their 5 minute lunch break, leaving the remaining 150 seconds to engage in humorless discussions of their social life with their fellow workers.

Russia had spread spies throughout Europe and two or three of them descended into a fantasy land, telling the Navy all sorts of insane bullshit and making it seem like the Japanese knew everything and they sailed in a state of hyper paranoia, the only really experienced officer in the fleet was the Admiral, who knew it was a bad idea from the start and basically held the task force together through sheer willpower

The combination of incompetent crew, shit boats and paranoia combined to lead them to mislabel trawlers as torpedo boats, under the faultless logic that torpedo boats are small, and therefore that small boat that's sort of near you must be a torpedo boat

I don't think they have won a single war against India. They tried to ferment jihadism among the Pashtuns in Afghanistan and Kashmiri in part to make up for the deficit. And they lost something like half their population when "East Pakistan" (Bangladesh) left and basically have 1/2 of the country wanting to separate from the Punjab dominated government.

Well, look at it from Halsey's POV.

The Center Force had been detected, attacked, and "defeated", with the returning pilots reporting BDA of multiple BBs sunk and the survivors in full retreat. The smaller Southern Force was headed straight into a superior force in a superior position; they never had a chance.

The opportunity was suddenly there to exploit his advantage of interior lines, shift his forces, and complete the trifecta by wiping out the Northern Force.

The problem was, the BDA was not just wrong, but wildly wrong; only 1 BB had been sunk, and Kurita had turned around again once darkness had fallen.

The prudent thing for Halsey to have done was to split off his BBs to guard the straight, in the confidence that the reduced AAA would not significantly endanger his carriers against the depleted Northern Force. He made a plan to do exactly that... and then either forgot to do it, or decided against it. One contributing factor might have been that he was on one of the BBs that would have been left behind, and he didn't want to hand the carriers off to a subordinate to make the final attack.

If Halsey had accepted the tactical risk (and potential loss of glory) of staying behind, in exchange for the strategic safety of guarding the strait, he would have gotten a front-row seat to the last (and one of the largest) true gun duel in history--and that would have been quite a fight, with far closer odds than Kinkaid had just faced to the south. Nevertheless, with a superior position blocking the exit to a strait, and the fire-control radars of the Iowa class, he almost certainly would have won, and won big, cementing his legacy... instead, The World Wonders.

By "fair skinned peoples"? True collapse of civilization , of Roman civilization, happened with the Lombard invasions.

Lombards literally sent Italy back to the Stone Age: we have archeological dig sites where we discover that people ended up living in holes and caves as everything was destroyed, literacy disappeared, the entire government system was shattered. Even the agricultural organization (irrigation, for example) was too complex for a pure German people that grinded down everything to dust. Italy needed 400 years just to rebuild. Yep, keep believing your Atlantean Nordic race myths. No better than the Black Athena faggotry instead of proper historical research.

>>33770149

It's useless to debate with retards. Sadly, everyone does mistakes and types a reply before thinking. Tell me where are the conjectures (for example, tell me that the Italian government didn't collapse in 1943, compare the tables of industrial production of planes, artillery and guns between WW1 and WW2 and then tell me that the Romans believed in a genetically and race-based citizenship) and I'll admit defeat.

If not, shuttup faggot and learn to read.

The Sullivan Expedition
>But, anon, that pic doesn't look like a fuck up
That's because it's the only battle during the expedition. The Iroquois panicked when the artillery fired at to signal the American attack's start and routed. All of them. All the way from the NY/PA border to Canada. Where thousands of them froze and starved in the coming winter because they had fled too quickly to actually take anything with them from the towns they abandoned on the way.

The entire rest of the expedition consisted of Sullivan burning all the Iroquois' villages and crops and killing their livestock.

An entire political confederacy, over 600 years old and the richest and strongest Native American group in the Eastern Americas was defeated, dispossessed, and impoverished by a single salvo from less than a dozen light artillery pieces.

I need more of these. The actual, serious fuckups are just seriously depressing. Specifically requesting the officer who called from the mess and adjusted the ship's course because the morning sun was in his eyes before his morning coffee.

In exchange, have an outline of the Soviet version of Operation Plumbbob's Pascal-B. For reference, wiki on Pascal-B:
>uring the Pascal-B nuclear test, a 900-kilogram (2,000 lb) steel plate cap (a piece of armor plate) was blasted off the top of a test shaft at a speed of more than 66 km/s (41 mi/s; 240,000 km/h; 150,000 mph). Before the test, experimental designer Dr. Brownlee had estimated that the nuclear explosion, combined with the specific design of the shaft, would accelerate the plate to approximately six times Earth's escape velocity.[9] The plate was never found, but Dr. Brownlee believes that the plate did not leave the atmosphere, as it may even have been vaporized by compression heating of the atmosphere due to its high speed. The calculated velocity was sufficiently interesting that the crew trained a high-speed camera on the plate, which unfortunately only appeared in one frame, but this nevertheless gave a very high lower bound for its speed. After the event, Dr. Robert R. Brownlee described the best estimate of the cover's speed from the photographic evidence as "going like a bat out of hell!"

Just throwing that out there, the Japanese admiral in command that day said the only reason they were forced to turn back was lack of fuel. At this point in the war their fuel reserves were so depleted their ships didn't even have enough to fight and go back to port afterwards. That's how fucked the Japanese were right from the start.

In 1970, a cancerous tumour was discovered on Skorzeny's spine. Two tumours were later removed while he was staying at a hospital in Hamburg, but the surgery left him paralyzed from the waist down. Vowing to walk again, Skorzeny spent long hours with a physical therapist; and, within six months, he was back on his feet. Skorzeny died of lung cancer on 5 July 1975 in Madrid. He was 67 years old.At no point in his life did Skorzeny ever denounce Nazism.

He was given a Roman Catholic funeral Mass in Madrid on 7 August 1975. His coffin was draped in the Nazi colours. His body was cremated afterwards, and his ashes were later brought to Vienna to be interred in the Skorzeny family plot at Döblinger Friedhof. His funeral "was attended by dozens of German military veterans and wives, who did not hesitate to give the one-armed Nazi salute", according to former Mossad agents who attended the funeral.

The US supported Pakistan solely because India was being supported by the USSR. Recent relations have improved with India and the US through trade deals and relations between Pakistan and the US have soured throughout the 90s due to Pakistan's support of the Taliban regime. The civil war in Afghanistan is an amazing read if you find any information. The Tiger of Panjshir actually tried to warn the UN about an upcoming terror plot by Al Qaeda.

French army numbers are 6000 french + 2000 thai, 200 survivors.

At this time, besieged Suiyang had long been in a state of famine. The Old Book of Tang says:

尹子奇攻圍既久,城中糧盡,易子而食,析骸而爨,人心危恐,慮將有變。巡乃出其妾,對三軍殺之,以饗軍士。曰:“諸公為國家戮力守城,一心無二,經年乏食,忠義不衰。巡不能自割肌膚,以啖將士,豈可惜此婦,坐視危迫。”將士皆泣下,不忍食,巡強令食之。乃括城中婦人;既盡,以男夫老小繼之,所食人口二三萬,人心終不離變。[1]

(Yin Ziqi had besieged the city for a long time. The food in the city had run out. The dwellers traded their children to eat and cooked bodies of the dead. Fears were spread and worse situations were expected. At this time, Zhang Xun took his concubine out and killed her in front of his soldiers in order to feed them. He said, "You have been working hard at protecting this city for the country wholeheartedly. Your loyalty is uncompromised despite the long-lasting hunger. Since I can't cut out my own flesh to feed you, how can I keep this woman and just ignore the dangerous situation?" All the soldiers cried, and they did not want to eat. Zhang Xun ordered them to eat the flesh. Afterwards, they caught the women in the city. After the women were run out, they turned to old and young males. 20,000 to 30,000 people were eaten. People always remained loyal.)

Xu Yuan also killed his servants, which was recorded in The New Book of Tang:

The Fetterman Fight, 1866.

81 Americans are lured into an ambush by literally all the Indians within sight of Fort Kearney. Only 6 Americans are killed by gunfire and the Indians sustained minor casualties many as a result of friendly fire, because, again, literally all the Indians. After Little Bighorn it is the second worst loss the US military ever sustained against the Indians.

By the time reinforcements from the fort arrived not only was the battle over and the enemy gone, but they had already had time to scalp and mutilate the American corpses to the point that the Army's report on the battle was suppressed for over two decades.

Most importantly this led to the Treaty of Fort Laramie, the only time in its history that the US unequivocally lost a war.

Gotta love how the dedication plaque makes absolutely no mention of US intelligence fuckup.

Not sure it'd have changed anything though.

>More than 20,000 Allied POWs died at sea when the transport ships carrying them were attacked by Allied submarines and aircraft. Although Allied headquarters often knew of the presence of POWs through radio interception and code breaking, the ships were sunk because interdiction of critical strategic materials was more important than the deaths of prisoners-of-war,[3] and because Allied leaders feared that a pattern of sparing POW ships might lead the Japanese to abuse prisoners as human shields on valuable targets.
