Are big tanks really necessary?
>>
>>33755127
Bigger the tank, bigger the gun. Also has the possibility of adding more guns.
>>
Not really, there hasn't been any recent shooting wars so doctrine has gotten heavily divorced from reality
>>
Depends on who you are. If you are a purely defensive military whose purview only strictly involves countries directly bordering you, fighting generally insurgencies in an environment lacking in bridges and rivers; then there's simply no reason not to.
>>
>>33755127
Tanks are always necessary, and the bigger the tank the more necessary it is.
>>
>>33755127

Nope! Turns out you're right.

No one in the military ever asked 'are big tanks really necessary?'. Now that they have we can see that they aren't and we can start retiring everything except for up armored humvees.

Thanks for your truly unique and unanticipated insight into the nature of war!
>>
Really, there's no point. Tanks are constrained by the size that a railway car can effectively transport them. Any bigger and you shoot yourself in the ass logistically.
>>
>>33755653
what if you load them sideways?
some trains can carry two shipping containers one on top of the other, shouldn't have trouble carrying a 7 meter wide tank resting on its side. evidently, the tank would be designed with this in mind.

air freight on the other hand would be a pain in the buttocks, the galaxy's cargo hold is only 5.7 meters wide, for example.
>>
I mean T-72's are small and cool. Russia does not need bigger tanks.
>>
>>33755127
Bigger tank - more HP.
>>
>>33755127
tanks provide a means to help overcome physical barriers in war. So, yes...they are very useful.

What if Russians are just really small men?
>>
>>33755182

Wouldn't a really big tank be best for fighting defensively as it has less of an area to patrol with the battle coming to it in order to diminish its strategic mobility issues?
>>
>>33755127
The best possible tank design in genuine conventional modern warfare would be a small, short, relatively lightly armored vehicle that moves fast and has a giant fuckoff 120-130 mm cannon and advanced anti missile and rpg systems that can be produced relatively cheaply in high numbers.
The main reason we're seeing these massive overly expensive stupidly armored behemoths is because

>MBT's are most likely to be used in a purely ancillary role I.E. guerilla warfare, at least in the modern day

>Governments want to spend as much money as possible so that they can disappear more off the top for themselves

>Big tanks bring all the boys to the yard

yeah
the Chechen teach them that their APC need to be atleast mine proof
>>
When they moved to small brigades from huge divisions after 2008 they realized that big but protected from all sides>smaller but unprotected for their new tactic
>>
>>33757102
Not my plan but if I hit that (unmanned turret) off, will it die?
>>
>>33757137
hit with what? Afghanit can intercept apfsds
>>
>>33757137
the t-14?
if so probably not. the ammo is stored similar to previous soviet tanks but separated from the crew compartment by an armoured wall with blowout panels behind the turret on the hull, furthermore it's designed with the turret being almost sacrificial. so the turret blows off but the crew remains alive and theoretically able to drive the now turretless t-14 to safety.
>>
>>33756820

It was common soviet practise to assign tall people into infantry and short ones into tanks .
>>
>>33757165
But what if the APS fails? I bet it will be extremely painful.
>>
>>33757186
it wouldnt. Turret in armata is like barrel in machinegun.

mine protection became a much bigger priority than being small profile. you can always hide most of your vehicle behind terrain features. so the height is really irrelevant. you should not be taller than a bus otherwise you get into trouble on certain roads and in cities.

I do not think it would die, because it is an inanimate object, and such does not have life. but it would be very painful to the mechanic who has to repair it.

Well, that was the main idea. T-14 is tall, but vital components ends at hull roof. Turret isn`t vital for crew survival. If you compare T-14 hull with old T-72, you will see, that the crew is positioned lower than that on old tank.

The T-14 is as much larger than Western tanks as Western tanks were larger than Soviet tanks.
>>
>>33757706
Except the T-14 is so much larger than a T-72 that the crew of a T-72 is still closer to the ground.

I always wondered why tanks dont have little pods that shoot cluster bomblets up in the air to defect infantry that is behind cover etc
>>
>>33758043
and these things even penetrate light Armour so in urban combat i can really see these things working
